It's the news that just might rocket you out of those New Year blues - Graham Linehan has said that a musical of Father Ted could be on the cards and it would probably have to include "spinning cardinals".
Linehan, who created the much-loved clerical sitcom with Arthur Matthews, said he would never bring the show back to TV and that the only realistic way to revive Fathers Ted, Dougal and Jack would be as a stage musical.
"I would never bring back the TV show, because of the risk you poison people's memories of the original," he told The Radio Times.
"But if you were to come up with a completely new format, I think it would be worth doing. I have this vision of a dance number, with spinning cardinals."
Linehan, who has previously adapted Ealing comedy The Ladykillers for the stage, says any new Ted would need to have a modern comedy edge to reflect how times have changed since the TV series ended in 1998.
The writer added that if the stage project were to go ahead it would have to make reference to the child abuse scandals involving the Catholic Church.
"The jokes would have to have a little bit more edge, because you just can't ignore this stuff." he said.
