The nominations for the 87th Academy Awards have been announced, with the Irish animated feature film Song of the Sea from Kilkenny's Cartoon Saloon among the nominees.
Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the nominations with nine each.
Directed by Tomm Moore, written by Will Collins and produced by Paul Young, Song of the Sea is based around the legend of the Selkies and follows the adventures of Saoirse and her brother Ben.
It features the voices of Lucy O'Connell, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, Jon Kenny, Pat Shortt, Liam Hourican and Colm Ó Snodaigh.
Moore previously directed Cartoon Saloon's Oscar-nominated film The Secret of Kells. Cartoon Saloon also makes Puffin Rock, which has just begun airing on RTÉjr.
Northern Ireland's Boogaloo and Graham, directed by Michael Lennox, produced by Brian Falconer and written by Ronan Blaney, is nominated in the Best Live Action Short category.
American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash are nominated for Best Picture.
Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) are nominated for Best Actor.
Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Reese Witherspoon (Wild) are the nominees for Best Actress.
Robert Duvall (The Judge), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), Edward Norton (Birdman), Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher) and JK Simmons (Whiplash) are the nominees for Best Supporting Actor.
Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), Laura Dern (Wild), Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game), Emma Stone (Birdman) and Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) are the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.
The Best Director nominees are: Alejandro G Iñárritu (Birdman), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).
Along with Song of the Sea, Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Ida, Leviathan, Tangerines, Timbuktu and Wild Tales will compete for Best Foreign Language Film.
The nominees for Best Documentary Feature are: CitizenFour, Finding Vivian Maier, Last Days in Vietnam, The Salt of the Earth and Virunga.
The winners will be announced on Sunday February 22.
Song of the Sea was funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board and its CEO, James Hickey, said: "Congratulations to Irish animation filmmakers Tomm Moore, Will Collins, Paul Young and the entire Cartoon Saloon team, who deserve to be nominated along with the best talent in the world this year.
"With their previous feature film The Secret of Kells, Cartoon Saloon proved themselves more than capable of standing alongside the most renowned names in global animation and a second Academy Award nomination for the company has cemented this reputation of world-class talent.
The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, said of Song of the Sea's nomination: "I would like to offer huge congratulations to Cartoon Saloon, and to its director Tomm Moore, for securing this very prestigious nomination. Tomm previously received recognition for his work on The Secret of Kells, which was of course nominated for an Oscar five years ago.
"This is yet another significant achievement for the Irish animation sector, which has gone from strength to strength in recent years. It is an extremely dynamic element of the Irish audiovisual industry, and, as this nomination shows, it is making a big impact on the global animation scene."
