Modern Family to broadcast episode shot on iPhones

Hit US sitcom Modern Family is to broadcast an episode filmed almost entirely with iPhones and iPads.

Last October, camera operators on the show swapped their typical high-definition video cameras for mobile devices, as an approximation of the way many families communicate today.

"I have two daughters at college, and we do a lot of FaceTiming," Steve Levitan, the show's co-creator and executive producer, said at a Q&A session last week on the back lot at Fox studios.

"One day I was on my computer, and I had some emails open, and some websites, and then my daughter showed up. But I couldn't only see her, but I could see me."

The show was also partly influenced by the short film Noah, created by Canadian film students. That film is set entirely on a computer screen as the eponymous lead character goes through a breakup on social media.

"Everything was shot on the iPhone 6 or new iPads," Levitan added. "With one or two small scenes shot using MacBook Pros."

Connection Lost, the Modern Family episode shot with mobile devices, will be broadcast on ABC in the USA on Feb 25 and will follow on this side of the Atlantic on Sky 1.
