"The trouble with singing about your troubles is sanity, your sanity goes," admitted Sam Smith after his Madison Square Gardens concert in New York last night (February 21).
"It's weird. Something you want so badly all your life actually happens," Smith tells The Observer after his triumphant New York performance last night. "And then you think, 'Oh s***.'"
The Cambridgeshire singer recalls a sense of panic last spring while promoting his album, In the Lonely Hour. The promotional whirl in advance of the album's release entailed six live bookings a day.
"I thought, 'Do I want this? Maybe I've misunderstood what this job entails...' I've spent as much energy this past year trying not to go mental as I have plugging my record. You have to. It's like your body's trying to float away. And you're hanging on for dear life."
