John Joe Nevin is an Irish boxer who has been tipped to go all the way in the pro game – but his greatest challenge has come from outside the ring.
The Olympic silver-medallist's career was threatened when both his legs were broken in an altercation, and his comeback against all the odds was captured by award-winning film-maker Kim Bartley.
John Joe: Reality Bites is screened on RTÉ2 on Wednesday, March 25, and his battle against the odds after his life was turned upside down on the morning of April 5 2014, when he suffered horrific injuries.
Having achieved virtually everything he possibly could during a glittering amateur career, Mullingar bantamweight John Joe Nevin joined the professional ranks and set out on the gruelling road to pro boxing stardom.
Signing with GreenBlood Boxing in Philadelphia, leaving family and home to pursue his dream in the United States was a huge wrench for John Joe.
But as well as psychological battles, he also had to endure a physical one, as he sought to rehabilitate himself after having both legs broken. It would take a monumental effort to get himself fit for the ring – and get his career back on track.
