Will Ferrell plays hapless financier James King who is sentenced to ten years in San Quentin's notorious prison following insider trading at the company headed by the man who was to have been his future father-in-law. Now King has lost his job, his fiancée - the boss' daughter - and there are just 30 days until he is put away in chokey.
Fortunately he meets a young black man, Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart), who spots an easy way to make a handsome few bucks. Ferrell's gormless character falls for Darnell's spiel that he has done time in prison and is thus in a position to show him how to defend himself from constant rape and violence. That would be from, ahem, the largely Hispanic and black prisoners incarcerated at San Quentin.
So Darnell drills James in self-protection and constructs a pretend prison at his luxurious residence, with the domestic staff acting as prison guards. The film has caused some upset already because of its perceived racism, although it is more likely aiming its satire at the attitudes displayed by Ferrell's wealthy-but-naïve financier.
But why be offended by a movie that doesn't work anyway because it just messes too much with the warm, congenial heart that must drive a buddy comedy. There is too much disturbing stuff that just isn't funny, and one disturbing scene involving oral sex in a toilet that is downright scary.
So, like its numerous forerunners in the Ferrell catalogue, this gross-out movie will be enjoyed no end by late-teen boys. It will have them goggle-eyed with wonder, agog with slow-burning contempt, bug-eyed with sneaky admiration. They won't take it seriously, unlike grown-ups such as Justin Chang of Variety magazine who claimed the film had "some of the ugliest gay-panic humour to befoul a studio release in recent memory".
Och, that's taking it far too seriously: I don't think gay people will be that much offended. But there is, throughout, a casual nonchalance about violent sex which deflects way off-course the comic impact we actually want to feel watching Get Hard.
