Game of Thrones season five is nearly upon us so it's time to start looking back at the storylines that we reckon will be most important this season. With so many plots and sub-plots it can be hard to keep track of everyone's comings and goings in Westeros but don't worry, we've got you covered.
Spoilers for anyone not yet up to date on the TV show.
In season one the Stark's of Winterfell were introduced to us as the main characters and through the loss of the honourable Ned Stark we learned a very important GoT lesson – no one is safe. Since then we've had the Red Wedding and while it may seem as though their family is in ruin, each remaining member has a massive part to play in the future of the seven kingdoms.
Sansa has finally escaped King's Landing but while she may be free of Joffrey's torment and Cersei's vengeance, I don't know if 'safe' is a word we would use to describe her situation with Littlefinger. In the Eerie, where her aunt Lysa has met her maker through the Moon Door, Sansa will no doubt be used as a pawn in whatever scheme Littlefinger is plotting next. In the trailer we see him telling her, "There is no justice in the world, not unless we make it. Avenge them." He may have been missing from our screens for a while there, but Littlefinger, the puppet-master that he is, orchestrated Joffrey's death with Olenna Tyrell and is sure to be a major player in season five. Sansa may still be married to Tyrion Lannister but with him in hiding in Pentos for the murder of his father Tywin, she could be Littlefinger's ticket to claiming Winterfell, and a stronghold in the North is nothing to be sniffed at, especially if you have a Stark up your sleeve.
Winterfell itself is currently at the hands of the Bolton's and I can't imagine anything worse than giving Ramsay Snow/Bolton a glimmer of power. Until he appeared in the show Joffrey was the worst of the worst but this guy is in a whole other league. We need only look at Theon Greyjoy's fate to be reminded of just how sick and twisted Ramsay can be. Word on the street is he'll be after a wife soon – here's hoping it won't be poor old Sansa.
Arya (and her list) have escaped to Braavos after the youngest Stark daughter left The Hound for dead after an epic and dirty fight with Brienne of Tarth. While Castle Black may have been her ideal destination to catch up with her big brother Jon Snow, the ship was Braavos-bound and with her iron coin and those all-important words 'Valar Morghulis' she gained entry to the ship. Will she reacquaint herself with Jaqen H'ghar while she's there? In the trailer we see her outside the House of Black and White and it looks as though she's throwing her beloved sword Needle in the sea – could Arya be getting rid of her identity in order to become a member of the Faceless Men of Braavos? Whatever she gets up to we're sure it'll be cool.
Rickon, the youngest Stark, was last seen leaving big brother Bran to go to safety, while Bran and Hodor, with Jojen and Meera Reed, continued their journey beyond The Wall. When the group finally reached their destination they came face-to-face with the Three-Eyed Raven and one of The Children of The Forest – the original non-human inhabitants of Westeros. In the season four finale the Child told Bran, "The first men called us The Children, but we were born long before them."
It was announced months ago that this storyline wouldn't feature in the fifth season and having seen the first episode of season five already, we caught up with all of the major players bar this bunch so it looks like it'll be a while until this storyline is picked up on again. While some of Bran's journey was a bit boring in comparison to the other plot-lines – there were no dragons after all – the parting words of the Three-Eyed Raven, "You will never walk again, but you will fly" are sure to take things up a notch. One of Daenerys' dragons is on the loose, will Bran be warging into it in the near future?
Up at Castle Black Jon Snow will no doubt be instrumental in forming an alliance between the Wildlings/Free Folk and wannabe-King Stannis Baratheon. At the end of season four these two forces came face-to-face and we're sure there'll be some drama between Wildling leader Mance Rayder and Stannis if their last encounter is anything to go by. If they can work together it's their best hope against the White Walkers and in terms of Stannis' claim to the Iron Throne, a foothold in The North is the icing on the cake/his real reason for going to The Wall in the first place.
The Night's Watch is currently without a commander and given Jon Snow's popularity among the other members could this be something he takes on?
Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons – what a mouthful – what can we expect from her in season five? Her dragons are out of control and she's been forced to lock them up, one is still on the loose as it stands, so I'm curious as to how she can harness their power and actually train them again before she joins the war for the seat at King's Landing. It's all well and good to say you have dragons but if they're likely to go rogue, how reliant can you be on them?
In the season five trailer we see Lord Varys and Tyrion discussing the potential Queen, "The seven kingdoms need a ruler loved by millions, with a powerful army and the right family name" and having that pair in your corner can't be a bad thing. I'm excited for any scenes that involve Dany and Tyrion and I can't wait until she finally crosses the sea to stake her claim on the Iron Throne.
What will also be interesting to see is how her advisers sway her judgement now that Jorah Mormont (the biggest friendzone victim in modern telly) has been banished. Daario Naharis may be a love interest for Dany but will he try to use that to his advantage? I hope he won't, he's a beautiful man and it'd be great if she could just be happy, but I've seen too many episodes of Game of Thrones to trust him, or anyone else for that matter, implicitly.
Back in King's Landing things are going to be rough on Cersei following the death of Tywin. With Joffrey dead, her daughter Myrcella in Dorne, Jaime betraying her trust by freeing Tyrion, and Margaery Tyrell set to sink her claws into Tommen, will she be able to hold down the fort and keep the remaining Lannister's in power?
The Tyrells are growing stronger and once other families hear that Tywin is no more, it's only a matter of time before they all start sniffing around and seizing their opportunity to strike. What's more, if the other Lannisters that we haven't gotten to know yet show up (didn't one of them help her with poisoning King Robert way back?) that could spell trouble too because if they're all as ruthless and power-hungry as the ones we do know, things could get interesting.
What will become of the Lannister home in Casterly Rock? We've seen Tywin begging Jaime to leave the King's Guard in order to start a family and look after their land and people there, to which he refused because he'd rather stay in King's Landing and protect his son/nephew/king than continue his family legacy. Now that Tywin is dead, will Jaime have a change of heart and grant his father's wish? We can't see him upping and leaving Cersei and Tommen but who knows... Perhaps he and Brienne of Tarth could elope and live happily every after? Who am I kidding, there are no happily ever after's in Game of Thrones.
With Olenna having orchestrated Joffrey's death, Margaery has her sights set on her third Baratheon husband – young Tommen. Renly and Joffrey have both been murdered so I wonder if it's a case of third time's the charm for her. Cersei was set to marry Margaery's brother Ser Loras but given the fact that Tywin was behind that match, we're sure the Queen Regent will put an end to that engagement pretty swiftly and stick around King's Landing to protect her son from Margaery's influence/use his power to do her own bidding.
Tommen and Margaery's wedding is previewed in the trailer for season five and weddings in GoT never run smoothly so even if the happy couple manage to make it through the festivities this time around, we're sure someone else won't get off as lightly.
Dorne will play a huge part in season five with Oberyn Martell's daughters The Sand Snakes set to make their first appearance in the show. His three daughters, all extremely skilled fighters, will be out to avenge their father who died at the hands of The Mountain. With Myrcella in Dorne, she's bound to become a pawn in this game of revenge. If something should happen to Tommen would she, and her Dornish husband, have a claim to the throne?
A big question I would like answered this season - where is Gendry? It's been a long time since Ser Daavos Seaworth sent Robert Baratheon's son out to sea to escape Melisandre and we've yet to catch up with the actual heir to the throne. Is he lost at sea? Did he go into hiding? We just want some kind of update on his whereabouts!
So as it stands, the main players for the Iron Throne are:
Tommen Baratheon - the pressumed son of King Robert and the next King. He's actually the son of Jaime and Cersei Lannister so he has no legit claim at all really in the same way his big brother Joffrey was never a rightful king.
Stannis Baratheon - the brother of the late King Robert Baratheon. Has a valid claim to the throne, even Ned Stark agreed, but he's busy at The Wall now planning to protect the realm from the White Walkers because if there's no people to rule, what's the point?
Daenerys Targaryen - her claim to the throne goes back to her father King Aerys II Targaryen, who was removed from the throne by Robert Baratheon following the rebellion.
Outsiders:
Gendry - he's one of probably many children that King Robert has out there and perhaps somewhere down the line, if he doesn't just go into hiding forever, his lineage will be revealed and people will decide that he deserves the throne. Given that his own uncle Stannis didn't support him I'm not full of hope that he'd manage to pull together an army of supporters.
Jon Snow - if the rumours about his parentage are true then he would have a stronger claim to the throne than Dany. Dany's older brother Rhaegar was the heir to the throne during their father King Aerys' reign and he began Robert's Rebellion after he kidnapped Lyanna Stark (Ned's sister) from Robert and brought her to Dragonstone. If the rumours are true, Jon is actually Lyanna and Rhaegar's son, not Ned's bastard as we are led to believe. In season one Ned vowed to tell Jon Snow about his mother when he returned from King's Landing, but he never did return to Winterfell so the truth never came out. Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch is a Targaryen but as he has taken his vows he has given up any claim he should have to the throne. While the same would be true for Jon, he's already broken a few of the vows so who is to say he wouldn't break another one if it meant becoming King? I'd be happy with either him or his potential niece Dany sitting on the throne to be honest. If he is actually Ned's son, and the theories about his parents are false, I'd still love to see him in King's Landing, face-to-face with some of the other major players.
Having seen the first episode of the fifth season I'm pretty sure that's all the reminders and re-caps you'll need if you don't have time to re-watch any of the show before it all kicks off again on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on April 13.
