Percy Sledge, best known for the hit When A Man Loves A Woman, has died aged 73.
The news was confirmed by Sledge's management agency which said he passed away at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"He was a wonderful guy in a terrible business," said Steve Green with Artists International Management, Inc said. "He was truly a standout."
Born in Alabama in 1941, Sledge worked in a succession of jobs including as a hospital nurse before he achieved success in the mid-to-late 1960s and early '70s with a series of emotional soul songs.
When a Man Loves a Woman was released in March 1966 and was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK it improved on its top four charting on re-release in 1987, when it reached number two.
Even more notably, When a Man Loves a Woman was also the first gold record achieved by Atlantic Records.
And although Sledge enjoyed several other hits, including Warm and Tender Love and I'll Be Your Everything, he never reached the plateau achieved with his first, and most recognisable hit.
