A major refurbishment of The National Gallery of Ireland is to take place, with approximately €20 million to be spent on the project by 2015.

It's reported to be the largest single refurbishment project since the National Gallery opened in 1864.

Over 300 jobs are to be created and work is expected to be completed by late 2015.

Announcing the refurbishment, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan said: "This is the single largest transformation at the National Gallery of Ireland in 150 years. I am delighted to announce this extensive refurbishment, which will deliver both a world-leading national gallery and also generate 300 full time construction and specialist skills jobs."

He added: "This project marks a rebirth for the historic Dargan and Milltown Wings - and will safeguard these historic buildings, and the priceless works of art that they hold, for future generations."
