Fox Searchlight Pictures has agreed a deal for the US rights to the new Irish black comedy-drama Calvary, which stars Brendan Gleeson.
Reuniting Gleeson with The Guard writer-director John Michael McDonagh, Calvary tells the story of a priest who must battle the dark forces in his small country town.
The film also stars Marie Josée Crozé, Isaach De Bankolé, Aidan Gillen, Domhnall Gleeson, David McSavage, Dylan Moran, Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Killian Scott, Pat Shortt and David Wilmot.
Calvary is released in Irish cinemas by Entertainment One on April 11 and is the Opening Gala film at next month's Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.
Announcing the deal, which will also cover "select international territories", at the Sundance Film Festival in the US, Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula said: "Brendan Gleeson gives a tour de force performance in a film that John Michael McDonagh has written and directed with perfection, taking us into a world with distinctive characters where the stakes are high."
Writer-director McDonagh said: "We made a great film. In Fox Searchlight, we now have a great company behind us to send that film out into the world. Thank you, Sundance. Thank you, bourbon! Onward."
James Hickey, Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Bard (IFB), which funded Calvary, said: "We are delighted that Fox Searchlight has picked up Calvary for the US and we hope that US audiences will embrace this film, which was shot on location in Co Sligo and features a very strong line-up of world-class Irish acting talent."
