Filming has begun in Manchester on the third series of the award-winning Victoria crime drama Ripper Street, with production set to move back to the show's traditional base at Clancy Barracks in Dublin for a number of months later in the summer.

The first and second series of Ripper Street employed 5,000 Irish cast, extras and crew and contributed €20m in total to the Irish economy.

Under the deal which saved the series from the axe, the third season will premiere as an Amazon Prime Instant Video exclusive before being screened on BBC One a few months later.

Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg have reprised their roles as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake and Captain Homer Jackson respectively, with MyAnna Buring also returning as Long Susan.

Star MacFadyen said: "I'm delighted and excited to be back for a third series of Ripper. Thank you to Amazon, thank you to our fans who wanted more, and thank you to our wonderful writers and producers for giving us the most thoroughly brilliant, gripping and heart-rending episodes."

The first season of Ripper Street continues on RTÉ One on Monday night, May 26, at 11.15pm.
