Irish radio presenter and DJ Tony Fenton has passed away aged 53 following a long battle with prostate cancer.
Fenton, who was from Glasnevin in Dublin, began his career as a DJ working at birthday parties before making the move to radio in 1979 with Dublin station ARD, where his fellow DJs included Ian Dempsey and David Kelly.
Through the 1980s Tony worked with Sunshine Radio and Radio Nova before moving to RTÉ 2fm, (then known at Radio 2) in 1985.
Fenton worked in 2fm for 18 years across numerous shows and increased the station's audience greatly.
Leaving 2fm in March 2003, he started in Today FM in September 2004 with a new lunchtime show, before moving to the 2.30 to 4.30pm slot.
Tony was named Music Broadcaster of the Year at the 2008 PPI Awards, and was nominated again in 2011. He was also nominated for Best Radio DJ - National in 2009 and 2010.
He was inducted into the PPI Radio Hall of Fame last year.
Tony was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and passed away in St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin last night (March 11).
His friend and colleague Ian Dempsey said: "I just cannot believe it. We've know he has been sick for a long time but we were not expecting this. He was a fantastic friend of mine."
Comedian and impressionist Mario Rosenstock said: "Nobody that I have met in my life knew how to live life as brilliantly as Tony Fenton. He believed that everything would always go right and it always went right for Tony Fenton.
"The thing about Tony was he didn't have a wife and kids and for a man who didn't have a wife and kids he was surrounded by more love than anyone I know."
Tony was very much the DJ's DJ. A man with a big personality but a boyish demeanour, he had a relaxed, always upbeat and humorous on-air style and a self-deprecating wit.
Tony was always ready to send himself up in the often competitive world of pop radio broadcasting and his passion for music remained undimmed in his long career as a broadcaster.
