'Scandalous' stained glass piece on show in Dublin

An original stained glass artwork by Dublin artist Harry Clarke, which outraged the Irish Government in 1930, has gone on public display at Dublin's Hugh Lane Gallery.

The piece depicts a scene from Liam O'Flaherty's controversial novel Mr Gilhooley in which the semi-naked Nelly seduces Mr Gilhooley, wearing "nothing but a veil" so "her body, as she moved, showed through its folds".

Clarke had chosen scenes of novels by contemporary Irish writers as his themes for the Geneva Window, an extensive stained glass piece which was commissioned by the Irish Government for the League of Nations building in Geneva.

The window includes pieces inspired by the literature of Yeats, Shaw and O'Casey, but Clarke's choice of the scene from O'Flaherty's novel was deemed scandalous and unsuitable by Ireland's President of the Executive Council, WT Cosgrave, and was never used in its intended home in Geneva.

Instead, the window was installed in Government Buildings in Merrion Square and the contentious panel remained in Clarke's family until his daughter gave it to her doctor in Bray. It was then sold, along with the Geneva Window, to the Fine Art Society in London

In 1988, it was acquired by the London collector John Scott, but the Mr Gilhooley panel has now been acquired by the Hugh Lane at a price of £35,000 from the Fine Art Society, London.

It will now go on permanent display at the Hugh Lane Gallery, where it can be seen for free.

At the unveiling today (March 11), Barbara Dawson, Director of the Hugh Lane Gallery, said: "Harry Clarke was Ireland's greatest stained glass artist. His marvellous imagination, his originality in depicting his subject matter and command of the stained glass technique makes him one of the greatest stained glass artists of all time.

"By acquiring Mr Gilhooley we have ensured that a rare and valuable Harry Clarke original is available for the Irish public to view freely at Dublin's Municipal Gallery."
