Bette Midler has admitted that she was "totally offended" to receive an offer to play a grandmother in a new film.
The 67-year-old plays a grandparent in new comedy Parental Guidance opposite Billy Crystal, but Midler explained that she didn't find the job offer funny when she was first approached about the part.
Speaking to the New York Post, she said: "I was totally offended. I didn't think grandmother parts would come so soon."
However, Midler accepted the role when she discovered she would be playing a granny who is young at heart.
She added: "I was up for playing a fun grandma... Grandparents are not quite the same as they used to be. People are fighting tooth and nail to stay fit."
Billy Crystal, who also produced the film, added: "I have three and 2/3 of a grandkid. The last one is due in March. I created the movie from real experiences with my grandkids. I am a grandpa - you can't try to hide this stuff. I embraced it. I earned it."
