Prior to becoming an overnight success following his performance as Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, the German-Austrian actor was well known for his work on stage.
Fanning asked him if his background in theatre helped his approach to film, in terms of the script: "Absolutely. To not mess with an author is something that I learned from an author 30 years back.
"They [actors] don't do that anymore, they mess."
