Former Smiths guitarist and proud second generation Irishman Johnny Marr plays Dublin this March in support of his debut solo album, The Messenger.
He plays The Academy, Dublin on March 27th. Tickets priced at €24.50 are on sale this Friday, 25th January at 9am from Ticketmaster outlets and online from www.ticketmaster.ie
Marr releases The Messenger on February 22. Naturally his universally-recognised guitar playing will feature but he also takes on vocal and production duties on a set which includes new songs I Want The Heartbeat, European Me, Word Starts Attack, and The Right Thing Right (bit Noel Gallagher that one).
The Messenger was mastered at Abbey Road by Frank Artwright who recently collaborated with Marr on the re-mastering for The Smiths' box set Complete.
Marr: Get The Messenger
"The underlying idea of the record is my experience of growing up in Europe," says Marr, who has recently moved back to Manchester after seven years in Portland, Oregon. "When you're away from your home city you're more compelled to write about it, whether that's because you're homesick or you've got more objectivity, I don't know. Growing up in the city influences you, and I've continued to see, stories and energy in it."
Marr's former friend and sparring partner Morrissey has released a string of solo albums since The Smiths broke up in 1987 while the guitarist continued his career as an official member or touring guitarist for acts such as The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse and The Cribs. He's also appeared on albums by the Pet Shop Boys, John Frusciante, Talking Heads and Beck.
Last year Trinity College named Marr as an Honorary Patron of the University Philosophical Society alongside past patrons such as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and Bram Stoker.
