The Echo Chamber: The Story of Jihad Jane, 6.05pm, RTÉ Radio 1

On March 10, 2010, Katie Couric began the CBS evening news broadcast in America with the arrest of an Islamic terrorist cell originating in Ireland. The US prosecutors in the case declared the arrests represents 'the new face of terrorism.' Two American women and an Irish citizen, originally from Algeria, were accused of involvement in a conspiracy to kill a Swedish cartoonist named Lars Vilk. Vilk had a $100,000 bounty on his head for drawing offensive cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. All three had lived for little over a month together in a small one-bedroom apartment in Waterford, but were now looking at cumulatively a hundred years in American prisons. Following a two-year investigation, The Echo Chamber tells the story of what had happened in that small apartment in Waterford. Narrated by the actor Stephen Rea.

Opera Night: Wagner's Die Walküre, 7.00pm RTÉ lyric fm

In the second instalment of Der Ring des Nibelungen, the focus of the story shifts from the realm of the gods to the human world. Deborah Voigt sings the role of Brünnhilde and Mark Delavan and is Wotan. Stephanie Blythe, Martina Serafin, Simon O'Neill, and Hans-Peter König also star. Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium, live from the Met in New York. The composer of The Ring cycle, Richard Wagner, is depicted in the painting below. After Opera Night ends, hear, also on lyric, the first Billy Strayhorn tracks of the week from Blue Tunes Recommends on Blue of the Night. "Inspiration comes from the simplest kind of things. Then the work begins..." so said Billy Strayhorn, the journeyman pianist who took up an offer to become Duke Ellington's lyric-writer in 1939. "Sweet Pea" would subsequently deputise for Duke in the Ellington orchestra from time-to-time. But his principal contributions were in the areas of arranging and composition. All this week on The Blue Of The Night, Carl and Eamonn play Strayhorn's original music interpreted by an array of artists, including the man himself. Hear too selections from Ellington's posthumous tribute album, "And His Mother Called Him Bill".
