This week on The Zoo, zookeepers Helen Clarke Bennett and Gerry Creighton are faced with the loss of one of the oldest animals in the zoo, an animal whose death marks a milestone in Dublin Zoo's history.

Sheila, a 25 year old African lioness, was the last remaining member of a long and distinguished family tree of African lions living in Dublin Zoo stretching back over 125 years.

With wildlife conservation of paramount importance and the wild population of African lions relatively stable, following Sheila's death Dublin Zoo have taken the decision to look after Indian lions instead, a far more endangered subspecies of lion who are nearing extinction in the wild.
