Van Morrison is holding a free concert at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast next month to celebrate winning the freedom of the city.

Two thousand tickets will be available online from tomorrow (October 22) for residents of Belfast and fans will be chosen at random to receive admission to the gig.

The veteran singer/songwriter will receive the honour from officials at a ceremony at Ulster Hall on November 15 and will take to the stage for the free concert later that day.

A council spokesperson said: "The one-off concert at the Waterfront Hall is being held to mark Belfast City Council conferring the Freedom of the City on the legendary musician to mark his remarkable global status and contribution to the city where he was born."

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mairtin O Muilleoir, who will present the honour to the singer, added: "The term living legend is too loosely thrown around these days but there is no doubting Van Morrison's eligibility for such status due to his incredible talent as a songwriter, musician and vocalist."

Morrison, who was born in Belfast, is only the second person in ten years to be handed the honour.

Application for tickets can be made online at www.belfastcity.gov.uk and www.waterfront.co.uk or in person at the Waterfront Hall booking office from 10am on Tuesday, October 22 until 5pm on Wednesday, October 30.
