Irish sculptor Elaine Byrne won the coveted prize for sculpture at the 8th Arte Laguna International Art Prize held in the Arsenale, Venice, Italy on Saturday night (22nd March).
The winning work RAUM was first shown at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin in January 2013 and will be shown in the Limerick City Gallery in September 2014.
Thirty finalists were shortlisted from over 1,000 entries in the sculpture category with the overall winner being selected by a ten man jury.
The award was presented to Elaine by two of the jurists Miguel Amado (Portugal) and Veeraganakuman Solanki (India) who said the winning work "took a modernist ideal and crossed languages of time to make a current social commentary".
Elaine is the first Irish artist to have won an Arte Laguna prize in any category.
