With Glassland opening on April 17, star Jack Reynor has told RTÉ TEN that he did not choose his down-at-heel role as a way to put distance in the public's mind from the privileged character he played in another acclaimed Irish drama, What Richard Did.
In Glassland, Reynor plays John, a struggling Dublin taxi driver who reaches a crossroads in his life as he tries to save his mother Jean (Toni Collette) from addiction.
Earlier this year, Reynor won the Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival for his performance in the film.
When asked by RTÉ TEN whether his What Richard Did role was a factor in choosing Glassland as a project, Reynor replied: "I don't think that would have been any part of my conscious decision-making. Or subconscious, really.
"I think that I, as a person, relate an awful lot more to John than I do to Richard."
He continued: "I was brought up in Blessington in Co Wicklow and my family weren't particularly affluent... I understand the processes that these people [Glassland's characters] go through, probably more so than I would Richard in a lot of ways.
"For me, I think I was, in a way, more confident in this than I had been [starring] in Richard. But it certainly wasn't to try to make a statement or anything like that."
Watch out for a video interview with Reynor and Glassland writer-director Gerard Barrett on RTÉ TEN in the coming days.
