Anne-Marie Duff will lead the cast of the BBC's new psychological crime drama From Darkness.
Duff, who is known for her roles in dramas including Shameless and The Virgin Queen, will play Clare Church, a former officer who left the Greater Manchester Police after she became overwhelmed by the violence she encountered.
After feeling ignored in the office and in her relationship with her married DI, Clare found solace in the remote Western Isles with her new man Norrie and daughter Megan.
However when four bodies from Clare's past investigations are unearthed, she finds herself back in a world she thought she had left behind and faced with a case that only she can solve.
The series is the first original commission from writer Katie Baxendale, who has written for Sugar Rush and The Paradise, and will comprise of four one-hour episodes.
"Katie Baxendale has created a beautifully complex character in her female protagonist," Duff said of her new role.
"As soon as I started to read episode one I felt excited at the prospect of being involved. It's a world in which all of the characters have real stories to tell."
Baxendale said: "I'm a huge fan of Anne-Marie Duff. In Claire, I hope I've created a psychologically complex lead female character and I can't wait to see all that Anne-Marie brings to the role."
