Dubliner Aidan Turner plays the title character in the remake of the classic series, Poldark.
The original BBC series, based on Winston Graham's Cornish saga, attracted audiences of 15 million when it was first broadcast in the 1970's.
The series focuses on the romance between Poldark and a servant girl Demelza, played by Eleanor Tomlinson.
Turner, 31, has starred in Being Human, The Hobbit and The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, and admitted to The Irish Examiner: "If it wasn't a werewolf, a dwarf or a vampire, it wasn't for me. Playing a real person was great. That was a challenge in itself.
"It just resounded more with me, this character. He's strong, he's rebellious, he's resilient, an outsider. He has this insane sort of mental fortitude."
Speaking to The Irish Independent, Turner spoke about the 'romantic-style' of the series: "I guess there are a few Timotei shampoo-advert moments with me shaking my wet hair."
He also said recently: "When you're doing love scenes, clothes tend to get discarded. You can't really escape that, that's got to be in the show."
Tomlinson also spoke about the series: "It's probably sexier than the original series, but it's certainly not (director) Lars von Trier.
"And I don't like the term 'bodice-ripper'. Poldark is classier than that".
She added: "In the original Poldark novel, for example, Demelza is much younger when Poldark first takes her into his house - she's just 13 - that would jar in people's minds today."
Poldark airs on Sunday, BBC One, 9pm.
