Shobna Gulati. who plays Sunita Alahan on the hit TV soap Coronation Street, is set to depart the cobbles next year.

The 46-year-old actress has been on and off the soap since 2001, but has decided to focus on a future in comedy writing instead of acting.

Speaking to ITV online, Gulati said: "I had always told myself I would see my son through school and I have done that. I'd love to be able to combine my writing and acting career in the future."

Gulati will continue to be on the soap until next year, and confesses she will miss the character she has played for over 10 years.

She added: "Playing Sunita has been a fabulous opportunity. I've thoroughly enjoyed her journey and am looking forward with excitement to her dramatic departure. I shall miss her. That said, I have made a host of friends cast and crew - friendships that will stay with me."

Mick Flannery takes Germany... slowly

Mick Flannery has been making inroads into the lucrative German market with the release of his third album Red to Blue and a series of live dates.

The dry-witted Blarney singer, who has been living in Berlin for the past month, said that Germany has been surprisingly receptive to his music.

"The gigs are going unexpectedly well," he said. "I'm playing small enough places and some of them are selling out. What is wrong with these people?"

Speaking to RTÉ TEN from a shopping mall in Hamburg ("I've just bought a Neil Young album and a John Lee Hooker album for €4."), Flannery said he's also been making television appearances but he denied that he's taken up a new health regime after being spotted jogging in Berlin recently.

"Who told you that? I went jogging once but my legs seized up the next day," he said. "That was enough for me. I didn't want to risk a heart attack through jogging so I'll be doing it the usual way with a bottle of whiskey."

Flannery is due back in Ireland for a nationwide tour this November and December and he's also set to release his new single, Boston.

The Winter Irish Tour dates are:

Thursday November 22 - Olympia Theatre, Dublin

Enders' star surprised by fan attention

EastEnders star David Witts has admitted that he was "surprised" when he first started to get recognised in the street for his role in the hit TV soap.

Speaking on Daybreak, the actor who plays the part of Joey Branning on the show, said: "I grew up in a family that watched the soaps in and out, but we were never massive fans who followed them. So when I joined the show, it takes a couple of months filming to come on screen, and the producers were saying to me, 'Your life's going to change'.

"I thought, 'No, because I wouldn't recognise anyone from a soap, so why would anyone else?' So it does come as quite a surprise when people do!"

Asked whether playing a 'love rat' character comes naturally to him, he replied: "No! It's been really interesting, actually, to play against type with Joey. I think just by talking to me in these few minutes you'll probably be able to realise that I'm nothing like him. But it's been really good fun to explore that."

Witts won the Sexiest Male prize at the 2012 Inside Soap Awards last month.

Emmerdale star teases Scarlett return

Emmerdale star Kelsey-Beth Crossley has promised that viewers can expect "a bit of drama" from her character Scarlett Nicholls when she arrives back in the village.

Scarlett is set to return to the Dales tomorrow evening (October 31), in the run-up to the funeral of her half-brother Carl King (Tom Lister), who was killed off in the soap's live episode earlier this month.

Speaking to The Wright Stuff, Crossley explained how her return came about, saying: "I was at a party actually, and I found out that Tom was going, and I was in shock. Everyone knows he's a really well-loved character and I think everyone was a little bit like, 'What are they doing? Why?'

"But sometimes it has to be people who people really care about [who are killed off], otherwise it's not the best TV, is it?

"I'm back for ten episodes, but I get to squish a bit of drama in during that time. It's been so brilliant. It's just like a family and everyone gets on so well. I've missed everyone so much this year."

When asked if her character would make a more permanent return, she added: "Well, they didn't ask me, to be honest! It's great to go in and be free to do other things, because I've got some great auditions coming up as well. I'm happy."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on TV3 and UTV.

Deirdre set for heartbreak in Corrie

Deirdre is set to get some shocking news in Coronation Street that makes her question her marriage to Ken. Warning: Spoiler Alert!

Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) gets an unexpected visitor at the door later this week and discovers it's Wendy Crozier (Roberta Kerr), Ken's former flame.

Instantly annoyed, both Deirdre and daughter Tracy (Kate Ford) order her to leave. Crozier insists she has just come to tell them she has put in a formal complaint about Ken to Brian, the headmaster of the local school where they sit on the board.

Is Wendy set to cause trouble for Ken and Deirdre once again?

Crozier tells Deirdre that Ken has been making unwanted advances. "I've tried to keep a respectable distance," she explains, before giving Deirdre a full run-down of their secret time together over the past few weeks.

An insecure and confused Deirdre is left visibly shaken as Crozier leaves, while Tracy tries to comfort her, urging her mother to believe that she is lying.

"No, she's not. She's telling the truth. I knew it, I absolutely knew it," Deirdre tells Tracy, as she begins to cry.

Daniel Craig on Skyfall stunts

Daniel Craig has discussed shooting the dangerous stunts in Skyfall.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits, the 44-year-old actor, explained that he appreciated the way that Skyfall's stunts are filmed.

He said: "If there was anything I felt insecure about, we stopped filming and I would go off and rehearse it. It really is about making it look as easy as possible."

He continued: "I think there's been times when I've been standing on top of buildings on other movies and wondering, 'What the hell am I doing?' But on Skyfall it felt real good. We really wanted to push Skyfall as far as we could. We've always relied on the fact that we do things for real on Bond movies.

"The CGI is just to help out, as opposed to creating the scene. Standing on top of a train travelling at 50km/h, while fighting Ola Rapace over a 300ft drop, that's a standout moment for me."

Skyfall is in cinemas now.

Jade Ellis voted off X Factor

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 | 23.37

Jade Ellis has become the latest act to be eliminated from The X Factor.

Ellis was in the bottom two this week alongside boyband Union J after receiving the fewest amount of votes from the public. She then lost out on the judges' vote after competing in a sing-off.

She performed Dido's White Flag, while Union J sang a rendition of Pink's Perfect in the sing-off. However, Tulisa's act was eliminated after the judges chose to save Louis Walsh's group.

Walsh and Tulisa predictably chose to save their own acts this week, while both Nicole Scherzinger and Gary Barlow chose to save Union J and send Ellis home.

Scherzinger said that although Ellis had possibly her "favourite voice" in the competition, she saw how hard Union J were working.

The final vote came from Barlow, who said that although Ellis is a "phenomenal vocalist", he questioned her desire to win.

Ellis was criticised after she performed the Sugababes Freak Like Me in a Halloween special of the show on Saturday night.

Walsh said the performance had "more style than substance", while Barlow commented that her vocals weren't as strong as previous weeks.

The X Factor continues next Saturday at 8.20pm on UTV and TV3.

Strictly star warned over result tweet

Olympic athlete Louis Smith has been rapped by BBC executives after taking to Twitter to announce who had left Strictly Come Dancing before the announcement was broadcast.

The 23 year-old gymnast took to Twitter yesterday evening to broadcast his commiserations to Sid Owen and dancing partner Ola Jordan as they were the latest pair to leave the competition.

However, the results show is not broadcast live and during the show, Smith tweeted "Wat an amazing bu emotional roller coaster. So much luv for @FlaviaCacace & it's so sad to say bye to @sidowen5 and @TheOlaJordan #crewlove (sic)".

The tweet acted as a spoiler for thousands of fans on the social network, before the elimination was broadcast during the show's transmission. Executives were alerted of the tweet and it was deleted a while later.

The Sun reports a source close to the show as saying "Saturday night can be quite overwhelming and emotional for the celebrities, especially when someone leaves the contest. Louis was so caught up in the show that he totally forgot that TV audiences, along with fans who follow him on Twitter, hadn't seen the result".

"The importance of keeping the show result has been impressed upon Louis. He is embarrassed about it, but it was an honest mistake", the source continued.

Corrie stars tease Lewis storyline

The Coronation Street storyline involving Lewis, played by Nigel Havers, is set to endure a few twists and turns, the stars of the soap reveal. Warning: Spoiler alert!

Speaking to ITV, Havers explains the current storyline, saying: "Gloria has told me she's dying, and of course being actually quite a nice guy underneath it all, I'm looking after her. I can't tell Audrey I'm doing that, because she'd get hacked off".

"Well, it turns out that Gloria has been lying to me so I'm a conman who's being conned! And if a conman gets conned, he gets really cross", Havers added.

Lewis has recently been caught out as a conman by the residents of the cobbles, but Audrey has stood by her man and believed he has changed for her. Meanwhile, Gloria (Sue Johnston) and Gail (Helen Worth) are seeking revenge and to trip him up and catch him out.

Worth explained to ITV "Well, [Gail] was in cahoots with Gloria to set Lewis up, so when Lewis humiliates Gloria, it does cross Gail's mind that she could be next in the firing line".

"They do say revenge is a dish best served cold, so Lewis could be biding his time before setting Gail up for a fall. Lewis does tell Gloria that he has dealt with her, and will now turn his attentions to Gail."

Finding out the secret plot for revenge, Havers explains "[Lewis] confronts Audrey, and I think he's considering doing something fairly drastic there. I'm not sure what - I don't know myself what happens".

"This may well be the end of Audrey and Lewis. But you don't know, because you don't know what happens on Coronation Street. Watch this space."

Glee star almost quit acting

Glee star Naya Rivera admitted that she almost turned her back on her acting career for good at 21 after struggling to find regular work due to her multiracial background.

The actress started landing onscreen roles from the age of four, when she appeared on Eddie Murphy's U.S. sitcom The Royal Family, and she went on to win parts in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Baywatch and Even Stevens.

However, Rivera explained that the job offers practically vanished in her late teens because producers couldn't figure out what to do with her.

She said: "I am half Puerto Rican, a quarter German and a quarter black. That was always a big issue for me - being mixed race - because casting directors tended to be very like, 'Ok, are you Hispanic for this role?' 'Or is she going to be African American?'

"So, it was really tough and work started to slow down. From the time I was 16 to really up until turning 21, the roles were really, really few and far between. I had people say that I just wasn't a good singer. They didn't know what to do with me; I would never fit in any markets. I almost quit acting altogether."

Rivera, now 25, continued to audition for gigs and in 2009 she was cast as cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee.

She has also landed her a solo deal with Columbia Records.

Bono gave Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears advice on being a rock star.

The U2 rock star met the singer at a gig and gave him a lecture on staying grounded in the music industry.

Shears told Time Out magazine: "He came to see us play New York's Museum of Modern Art. There was this art installation, a completely white room with no ceiling so you saw blue sky above you, and my mom, boyfriend and some friends were there.

"Bono gave me the speech about not losing your way, keeping focused and staying grounded. It was one of the most surreal moments of my life!"

The singer added that he has not let band's success go to his head and would never splash out on gadgets such as a helicopter.

He said: "If I had that kind of money, I'd hire 100 go-go dancers. Or throw a house party: get a smoke machine, some lasers, a decent DJ and have a good time!"

New book on the work of Billy Roche launched

The Art of Billy Roche - Wexford as the World is the title of a new book of essays on the work of the celebrated playwright, musician, actor, novelist, short story writer and screenwriter (Trojan Eddie, starring Richard Harris.)

Roche's Wexford Trilogy earned the one-time rock musician an enviable reputation when the plays in question, A Handful of Stars, Poor Beast in the Rain and Belfry were staged at London's Bush theatre, over 20 years ago.

Roche's dramatic works have also been staged at the Abbey, Peacock and Gate theatres, most recently Lay Me Down Softly, starring Aisling O'Sullivan and Gary Lydon, both of whom were already household names from RTÉ's The Clinic.

Brendan Gleeson played the lead role in On Such as We, while an his short story Eden was adapted by Conor McPherson for a film, starring Aidan Gillen.

Liam Cunningham played Danger Doyle in Poor Beast in the Rain, in the BBC production of the Wexford trilogy. Roche's novel Tumbling Down is his affectionate evocation of his native town, encompassing memories of his family's lively public house where he pulled pints and helped out.

The short story collection Tales From Rainwater Pond (which featured Eden) earned Roche much critical kudos. In 2009, Roche did readings of some of those stories, including performances in New York.

This new anthology, the first comprehensive survey of Roche's work, focuses on his portrayal "of one Irish town as a microcosm of human life itself, elemental and timeless."

Published by Carysfort Press, the work is edited by Kevin Kerrane and features essays by Belinda McKeon, Colm Tóibín, Conor McPherson, Dominic Drumgoole from London's Globe theatre, and Benedict Nightingale, theatre critic with The Times newspaper. The book was officially launched by Colm Tóibín last night (Friday) in Wexford town.

Skyfall – RTÉ TEN review

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 Oktober 2012 | 23.37

In case you haven't heard, the new James Bond adventure Skyfall opens in cinemas today, Friday October 26. Here's Harry Guerin's review.

It took $586m at the box office, but 2008's Quantum of Solace failed the most crucial of Bond movie tests - the one about watching it again if it was on the telly. After Daniel Craig's fine debut as the Commander in Casino Royale, the ironically titled Solace was rushed, set-piece fixated and ultimately had you wondering about just how much life there was left in Bond.

Well, Skyfall proves there's plenty, and that some of his best days are still ahead of him. Not only is it the classiest Bond movie Craig has made to date, it's also the strongest in many a decade.

Beautifully shot by Roger Deakins, the movie opens with some breath-holding brilliance in Istanbul, where Bond and colleague Eve (Naomie Harris) are on the hunt for that most modern day of MacGuffins, a stolen hard-drive. By the time the doomy opening credits arrive you're left in no doubt that director Sam Mendes' movie will be all about tough choices and squaring away actions, with what follows a study of how the spy game has hollowed out those playing it. In a chilling assessment, Bond is later described as being "barely held together by pills, drink and love of country". Even if he's just about physically able to do the job, is his heart really in it anymore?

There are no such doubts about Mendes, who gets so many things right here - mood, build-up, riffs on Bond history, themes of resurrection and revenge - that he should be asked back again. He may have seemed an unusual choice for the job but throughout his career he's focussed on troubled men and their lives on the margins, so Craig's Bond is a perfect fit. Mendes brings out the best in his Road to Perdition star, with Craig's steeliness in inverse proportion to his likeability - there's not much in the way of 007 chumminess here, and the movie is all the better because of that.

As it is for what Mendes has done with the supporting cast. By turning Skyfall into something of an ensemble piece with more powerful scenes for the other cast members Mendes and the writers have provided a template for the films ahead. Judi Dench's M is right at the centre of the story, and you realise that previous Bond movies suffered for not giving her more screen time. Ben Whishaw's Q looks like the parka-wearing singer of an indie band but is well able to hold his own with Bond ("What did you expect? An exploding pen?") and a wingman worth having. Ralph Fiennes brings gravitas to his role as bureaucrat with backbone Mallory, with the potential to develop Naomie Harris' character Eve also immense. And while Javier Bardem isn't as powerful in terms of screen menace as he was in No Country for Old Men, blonde dye-job aside he's one of the better Bond villains and will make the ones to come up their game.

There are a couple of plot elements around the middle that don't work as well as others but Skyfall makes up for them with a truly memorable ending, containing far more suspense than we've been used to around these parts. Right up to the final scene you're looking at a franchise reborn, and one where anything feels possible again.

The closing credits tell us James Bond will return; that matters more than it has in a while.

Masterchef hopefuls ‘no time to waste'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 Oktober 2012 | 23.37

Masterchef judge Dylan McGrath says that the contestants have "no time to waste" if they want to be crowned the winner of this year's competition.

Speaking to RTÉ Ten Dylan McGrath revealed what it will take for one of the remaining 12 contestants to make it all the way to the final, in the hope of being awarded the coveted title.

The award winning chef said: "It's literally down to how well they take in information. Your ability to take in what you need from each task and to develop in the short period of time that we have really does determine who is going to win."

He added: "It depends on the individual person, the intelligence, wit or ability to soak it up. How much of a natural cook they are underneath it all. Some people take in stuff quicker than others and there is no time to waste really - you have just got to be on it from day one and be resilient."

In tonight's episode the twelve amateur cooks travel to Kilkenny Castle where The Kilkenny Triathlon is taking place and are charged with preparing lunch for 200 hungry athletes.

Cooking in mobile kitchens on the grounds of Kilkenny Castle, the 12 are split up into two teams and must battle against each other to create a menu and lunch that will impress its hungry, weary diners.

One lucky contestant who is deemed the Best Overall Performer on the day by Nick and Dylan will get the chance to cook alongside Chef of the Year 2012 Garrett Byrne.

Meanwhile the losing team must return to the MasterChef Kitchen where they must design and cook a 3-course menu that would be suitable for the First Class passengers of Emirates Airline.

At the end of the day, two contestants will lose their aprons, in the first double elimination of the series.

Analogue television signal switched off

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 24 Oktober 2012 | 23.37

Ireland's digital switchover took place this morning at 10am. The analogue television network was replaced by a digital signal in line with the rest of Europe.

The free-to-air television service, known as Saorview, provides consumers with a greater choice of channels, better quality pictures and sound, on-screen programme guides and Digital Aertel. Analogue Aertel continues to be transmitted for Sky customers who currently receive the signal.

To receive Saorview, viewers will need to have purchased a set-top box or a Saorview approved television. Retailers around the country have reported a significant late surge in business.

The Saorview information team will still be on hand to offer support. For members of the public with queries or problems, the Saorview lo-call number is 1890-222-012.

Fringe returns for final conflict

The wait is over for fans of sci-fi drama Fringe as the show returns tonight for a fifth and final season on Sky One.

Described by executive producer JH Wyman as 'the little show that could', Fringe has survived plenty of plug-pulling scares to become one of TV's most dizzyingly inventive dramas.

Key players Anna Torv, John Noble, Joshua Jackson are once again supported by a superb supporting cast that includes Jared Harris as the ultimate sci-fi baddie, David Robert Jones.

And while the time has come to join the Fringe Division for their last stand - with events picking up where season four left off - at least the show's devotees will see a proper resolution to the story.

It's the year 2036, Olivia, Peter, Walter and co have been sealed in amber for the last 20 years, and, done with observing, the Observers have become problematically proactive.

Reunited with daughter Henrietta (Georgina Haig, Underbelly), this comeback episode follows Peter as he sets out to find a missing Olivia and kick-start the fightback.

Fringe returns to Sky One on Wednesday October 24th at 10.00pm.

Irish composer triumphs over Madonna

Irish composer Brian Byrne has beaten off competition from Madonna and Florence + The Machine to win two awards at the highly prestigious World Soundtrack Awards 2012.

The results were announced last night at the closing night of Ghent International Film Festival where Byrne scooped awards for Discovery of the Year for his score to Albert Nobbs, recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and Best Original Song for Lay Your Head Down, lyrics by Glenn Close, performed by Sinéad O'Connor with the RTÉ CO.

Lay Your Head Down took the Best Original Song award ahead of songs performed by Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Florence + The Machine and Academy Award winner Bret McKenzie.

This follows an IFTA win for the LA-based Navan man and a place on the Oscar long list for the Albert Nobbs score and a Golden Globe nomination for Lay Your Head Down.

The Albert Nobbs soundtrack was recorded in RTÉ Radio Centre by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, with Byrne himself conducting.

"I am incredibly proud of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and its enormous contribution to the Albert Nobbs soundtrack," says Byrne. "I am so glad I got to do it with the home team. This orchestra's versatility is unmatched in Europe - let's hope there will be many more collaborations like this one."

Byrne previously composed The Late Late Show to usher in Ryan Tubridy's tenure and won an IFTA for his score for the Irish sci-fi comedy Zonad. He has also toured with Diane Warren and worked on the soundtrack for Sex and the City 2. He also played piano on Liza Minnelli's version of Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).

The composer's relationship with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra continues in November when his first classical album, Tales from the Walled City, with the RTÉ CO and guests including soprano Danielle de Niese and violinist Nicola Benedetti, is released on the Decca label.

Downton star annoyed by camera phones

Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle hates being filmed by fans with camera phones.

Coyle, who plays Lord Grantham's valet John Bates in the hit period drama, explained that he doesn't mind people having a photograph taken with him, but he detests the fact that fans are able to record footage of his everyday life.

BANG showbiz quotes him as saying: "One thing I'm really keen not to do is complain about the fact that I got a job that's made me very successful.

''But what I will say is that every single f****r on the planet has a camera. I posed for about 40 photographs yesterday.

''I don't mind stopping for a photograph, yes, sure.''

The 48-year-old star says he's very happy to be part of a successful show. "Any actor who told you that he didn't want to get a hit show is a liar. It's rare beyond belief.

''To get to do what you want at all is rare. Most of our struggles revolve around getting to do what we want to do, and be with the people we want to be with.

''These are our designs for life. I want to be with people who make me happy and do the things I want to do.''
