Emmerdale cast new love interest for Ashley

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Juni 2014 | 23.37

Tracy Brabin has been cast as Carole, a new love interest for the former Emmerdale vicar.

The 52-year-old actress, who has also appeared in Coronation Street and EastEnders, is set to be involved in a fiery love triangle when she arrives in the Dales later in July.

When Ashley (John Middleton) finds romance with Carole, he is initially reluctant to introduce her to his friends. However, vicar Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) quickly causes mischief by texting Carole from Ashley's phone.

As a result of Harriet's stunt, Carole soon makes an appearance in the village, but instead of upsetting Ashley, the trick causes their relationship to go from strength to strength.

And the joke is well and truly on Harriet, she ends up regretting her actions when she realises that she is jealous of Ashley's new lover due to her own feelings for him.

Speaking about joining the cast of Emmerdale Brabin said: "It is a total delight to be playing Carole back in my home town of Leeds. She's funny and sexy with a dark secret.

"Ever since I played Tricia in Coronation Street, it's been a personal and professional ambition to work with the wonderful actors and writers of Emmerdale. I hope the public take to Carole as much as I have."

Carole's first scenes air on Wednesday, July 23.

Writer Dermot Healy has died, aged 66

Dermot Healy's dedicated readers are today lamenting the passing of one of Ireland's most original and expressive contemporary writers, who has died aged 66. Seamus Heaney called him the heir to Patrick Kavanagh.

Born in Finea, County Westmeath in 1947, he was reared in counties Cavan and Sligo and, aside from a spell in London, lived in Ireland, his natural territory of inspiration, for most of his life.

His first book, Banished Misfortune, a collection of short stories published in 1982 established his reputation.

As a writer, his instinct was to the poetic and daring, quite unlike John McGahern, who tended to a sense of formal restraint. But the County Sligo-based writer treated his work with equal care and fastidious attention.

The novel, A Goat's Song appeared in 1994 and is regarded by many as his masterpiece, being the story of the doomed love affair between an an alcoholic playwright and an actress.Healy published five collections of poetry throughout his life-time

The 1999 novel, Sudden Times deals with the writer's time in a London, while Healy's memoir, The Bend for Home, is regarded by some as the best Irish memoir published in the 20th century.

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, has expressed his deep sorrow at the death of the renowned novelist, playwright and poet. He has offered his condolences to his wife, Helen, his two children and to his many friends.

"It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Dermot Healy," declared the Minister. "His was a wonderful talent. Widely regarded as one of our finest contemporary writers, Dermot will be remembered alongside the greatest Irish writers of any age.

"Through his writings and his poetry, Dermot was an inspiration to many, and his loss will be keenly felt by us all. I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his wife Helen, his two children and all of his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

Mastodon tell TEN about new Thin Lizzy tribute

With Mastodon's new album Once More 'Round the Sun just released, guitarist Bill Kelliher has been telling RTÉ TEN about how the band's love of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy found its way onto the title track.

Once More 'Round the Sun contains elements of the Thin Lizzy classic Cowboy Song, with Kelliher telling TEN that the track referenced the legendary band from the very start.

"That song, before it was called Once More 'Round the Sun, we had named it Lizzy - it sounded very Thin Lizzyesque," he said.

"Before all the Thin Lizzy references came into the song, we had different lyrics - the pre-production lyrics. When I was naming the songs in the computer when I was recording the pre-production stuff I called it Lizzy. It just evolved into a tip of the hat to Lynott and Thin Lizzy."

With Mastodon having already covered Thin Lizzy's Emerald live and on record, Kelliher was asked whether Thin Lizzy's ability to be hard, soft, happy or angry was part of the attraction for Mastodon.

He replied: "It's good for any band to be able to step outside the box and to just play however they're feeling at the moment and not be stuck as an artist in this band that can 'only play heavy metal'."

He added: "It [staying in the one style or mood] doesn't make sense because people change, people grow, people mature and people wear different clothes every day!

"You have different thoughts every day and you do different things. It's healthy to be able to experiment with your art and be able to paint a different picture for each album. Thin Lizzy was on the same kind of tip."

Star Trek 3 is going boldly back to its TV roots

Director Roberto Orci has claimed that Star Trek 3 will be more reminiscent of the original TV series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Orci is replacing JJ Abrams, who directed the first two films, and he has also explained that the next Enterprise adventure will take place in deep space.

Speaking on Geoff Boucher's new Humans From Earth podcast, he said: "In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story.

"It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.

"So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

Star Trek 3 is expected to be released in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original series, which debuted on US TV in 1966.

Springsteen criticises Suárez for bite

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Juni 2014 | 23.37

Bruce Springsteen has commenting on the on-going controversy about Luis Suárez's World Cup biting incident, commenting that "Biting has no place in sports."

The Uruguayan striker, who also plays for Liverpool, appeared to bite Italian player Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder in the World Cup clash between Uruguay and Italy on Tuesday (June 24).

In an interview with TMZ, Springsteen asked: "What are the rules about biting in the World Cup? There probably should be one."

Mike Tyson's biting of Evander Holyfield during their 1997 World Heavyweight Title fight should be considered "the last bite," Bruce added.

Springsteen recently joined The Rolling Stones on stage in Lisbon to sing Tumbling Dice. At the Stones' New Jersey gig in 2012, he also sang along with the band on the same song.

Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) and her daughter, Minnie, have joined husband Luke in LA.

Luke is there to help manage the career of famous actress Sage Seymour. Becky is convinced she is destined to be Sage's personal stylist, and go from there to working with every A-list celebrity in Hollywood.

However, things become complicated when Becky joins the team of Sage's arch-rival without telling Luke. Will her ambition to make it in Hollywood cost too much? That's pretty much the plot of the new one, due in the autumn.

Ringo says McCartney is 'almost ready to rock'

Ringo Starr has announced that fellow Beatle Paul McCartney is getting better all the time and is almost ready to resume his Out There tour.

McCartney had to cancel shows in the US and Asia several weeks ago, after being hospitalised in Tokyo as a result of a severe viral infection.

The 72-year-old has since confirmed that he will resume his tour in July, and his now former Fab Four band mate Starr has said that McCartney is in good spirits.

"He's doing good," Starr told Access Hollywood. "I text him, and he texts me back.

He added: "And [Paul] was actually out the night before with [Barbara Bach], my wife, and Joe Walsh and [his wife] Marjorie . . . and [Paul 's wife] Nancy [Shevell]. They were all like, dinner out, so they all say he's doing good."

Starr also declared that McCartney is now "getting fit" and will soon be "ready to rock".

The Out There tour is set to resume on July 5 at the Times Union Centre in Albany, New York.

Review: Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie **

The redoubtable Dublin mammy with a heart of gold and a mouth like a U-bend explodes onto the big screen and everything is cruder, ruder and even more head-shakingly unfunny. D'Movie is a daft old school caper movie but it is also a carnival of bad taste and corniness. In short, it is d'ire.

Brendan O'Carroll's comedy grotesque is one of the most divisive characters in sitcom history, loved and loathed in unequal measures and soon to be a media studies module in a college near you. It is a throwback to comedy era when Reg Varney was a household name and the once wary nations of Ireland and the UK were united on at least one front - our ability to giggle at the mention of Mrs Slocombe's choice of domestic pet.

Of course, the modern anti-fun PC brigade would call this rampant sexism but as O'Carroll says himself, Mrs Brown is comedy for an audience that has been left behind and sure enough, D'Movie dumps us right back into the bleak comedic winter of Carry On films and the updated vaudevillian smut of 70s and 80s sitcoms. A time when gags about gay men, the elderly, "foreigners", and jokes about fannies and farts was minted comedic coinage - Allo Allo-brow anyone?

O'Carroll is alone in a field which everyone else has long fled, either out of basic good manners or good old-fashioned shame. But in cold commercial terms, 800,000 Irish viewers and eight million UK viewers cannot be wrong, right?

D'Movie does not feck with the formula. In the opening scene, Agnes falls out of bed, and goes about her morning routine while making quips to the camera, just as she does in the TV series. Fourth wall demolished so and meta cuteness delivered but to expand the sitcom format and pad out the bra (and the plot), the matriarch of mirth is faced with a life or debt situation when she is served with a tax bill for €4 million, stretching all the way back to 1802 when her great, great grandmother first set out her stall on Moore Street.

1802 is also when most of the gags in D'Movie date come from (you can see them being telegraphed from a similar distance). Anyway, the race to clear Mrs Brown's good name is on and we are launched into a caper movie involving an unscrupulous businessman who wants to demolish Moore Street and replace it with a nice gleaming new shopping mall and who uses the strong-arm tactics of Russian Mafia as his stooges.

Throw in a group of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, a barrister with Tourette's, an incompetent solicitor named Tom Crews (chortle!) played by Simon Delaney and a news reporter (played with gusto by Fair City's Ciara O'Callaghan) named Irma Bike (double chortle!). Shavian or what?

So far, so episode of Scooby Doo only with a lot more jokes about the Chinese, the Russians, and cartoon versions of gay men. Worse than all of this however could be an opening sequence of dreadful musical theatre complete with River-dancing extras that makes a B*witched pop promo look like a Slayer video.

The energy levels are kept high throughout, the gags rat-a-tat hard and fast, just like Agnes' nerve-jangling laugh but when the movie takes time out from the helter skelter caper, it is to deliver a mawkish speech about what Dublin really means and to crowbar in a badly judged reference to Sophie's Choice.

Lewd and crude (and booed by critics), Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie is aimed squarely at fans of broad and blunt comedy. After even two seconds of exposure, detractors will need heavy medication or at the very least, a night in with a Frazier box set and the collected works of Douglas Adams.

And, of course, this is exactly how it should be. Me? I get it - I just don't get it. Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie is the least fun I've ever had in a darkened room.

Turturro wants Big Lebowski spinoff

John Turturro wants to make a Big Lebowski spinoff, the actor has confirmed.

He is seeking permission from the Coen brothers to bring his character from the film, Jesus Quintana, back to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Turturro said at the Taormina Film Festival: "If I can get the permission I need, I'd like to return to that role."

However, the Coen brothers do not seem as interested in revisiting the world of 'The Dude'.

Ethan Coen told the Toronto Star last year: "He [Turturro] talks incessantly about it. He even has the story worked out, which he's pitched to us a few times, but I can't really remember it. I don't see it in our future."

Turturro's iconic character Jesus was a rival bowler in the 1998 crime comedy which starred Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore.

Turturro recently starred alongside Woody Allen in Fading Gigolo, which he also directed.

John Cleese calls recent Bond films "humourless"

Veteran British comic John Cleese has poured scorn on the Daniel Craig era of James Bond films by describing them as "humourless".

The Monty Python member – who appeared in two pre-Craig Bond movies, 1999's The World Is Not Enough and 2002's Die Another Day - slammed the spy saga for what he sees as pandering to the Asian film market.

In an interview with the Radio Times, Cleese said: "I did two James Bond movies and then I believe that they decided that the tone they needed was that of the Bourne action movies, which are very gritty and humourless.

"Also, the big money was coming from Asia, from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, where the audiences go to watch the action sequences, and that's why in my opinion the action sequences go on for too long, and it's a fundamental flaw.

"The audiences in Asia are not going for the subtle British humour or the class jokes."

The Frames to plays special Dublin gig next week

Falling Slowly hitmakers The Frames are set to mark their 25th anniversary in style by playing a special gig in Whelans.

Whelan's announced the gig saying: "Since the early 90's, Whelans has enjoyed some immense Frames performances and watched as the band has grown since the explosion of the single Revelate back in 1995 led to a string of sell out gigs and queue's around the corner and down the street. The Frames have regularly sold out far bigger venues in Dublin but still come back to Whelans for the occasional gig.

"Recently Glen had his birthday party in our front bar where the invitees were treated to a full band performance. The film which also starred the pair, also transferred very successfully to the theatre."

"So June 30th is bound to be a magical night and another highlight in what is a very special year for Whelans."

Tickets are on sale tomorrow, June 24th from 2pm on www.whelanslive.com

Bourne 5 producer rubbishes Matt Damon return

Bourne franchise producer Frank Marshall has rubbished rumours that Matt Damon will return for the film's fifth incarnation.

A report had emerged last week claiming that shooting for the next film had been delayed in order to allow Damon to reprise his role as Jason Bourne, alongside Jeremy Renner's Bourne Legacy lead Aaron Cross.

"It's simply not true," Marshall told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that director Justin Lin "is working with Andrew Baldwin on an Aaron Cross script/story that they pitched us a few months ago.

"I talk to Justin all the time and the script is not ready. It's a summer movie, and if we don't start pre-production now, we can't make next summer. Therefore, it's a wise decision to move to 2016."

Marshall had previously admitted that his dream for the next Bourne film is to "see Matt and Jeremy team up".

Damon, for his part, has said that he would be open to returning, but only if Paul Greengrass - who directed the two later films in the original Bourne trilogy - was also involved.

The as-yet-untitled fifth instalment of the Bourne franchise is scheduled for release in July 2016.

Earlier this month the 34-year-old presenter was replaced as the host of The Xtra Factor by Radio 1Xtra DJ Sarah-Jane Crawford.

Speaking for the first time about the change, Flack told the Daily Mail that she understood why Simon Cowell made the decision not to renew her contract.

She said: "I don't see it as being bad at all – it's an exciting time. Simon keeps changing his shows on a regular basis, and change is healthy when it comes to television.

"Even if you look back at his programmes from five years ago they look dated. He's always discovering something new.

"With this industry you have to learn to cope with the ups and downs quite early on – you have to be prepared for what it's like.

She added: "It's a competitive industry and there will always be other people who want to do your job. I very much know what the industry is like. It makes it fun and interesting.

"You do it because you love it. The ups are good and the downs can be challenging," she added.

Flack co-hosted The Xtra Factor with Olly Murs from 2011 to '12 and she was joined by Matt Richardson for last year's series.

Musical gameshow Name That Tune is on the way back

ITV is planning to revive the once hugely popular musical gameshow Name That Tune.

Broadcast Now reports that the UK broadcaster has agreed a deal with British TV producer Natalka Znak's new independent production company, and commissioned a 60-minute pilot using the classic format.

Name That Tune features two contestants who face a series of questions that tests their musical knowledge in front of a studio audience.

It was originally launched in the US in 1952 on radio, before it moved to TV and then crossed the Atlantic and began in the UK on Granada Television in 1956.

The show was previously revived by ITV for a very successful twelve-year run in 1976, before Channel 5 commissioned two seasons in 1997, which were fronted by piano-playing TV host Jools Holland.

ITV last used the format on Vernon Kay's Gameshow Marathon in 2007, and this latest incarnation follows on other recent ITV revivals such as Catchphrase and Surprise Surprise.

Eamon Dunphy: 'You can't normalise bad language'

RTÉ pundit Eamon Dunphy has apologised for letting the 'F' word slip live on air during commentary of last night's Brazil vs Mexico World Cup game.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, he said: "I thought we were on an ad break. I used the 'f' word and it's not right. I am very conscious that kids were watching and you can't normalise that kind of language as we are broadcasters."

Fellow commentator Didi Hamann was also unaware they were back on air as he could be seen checking his phone.

Dunphy added: "I reflected on it and it was obviously wrong, although in the great scheme of things I didn't libel or defame anyone. There were no callers complaining and people on social media were generally sympathetic. I think they realised it was a mistake."

The World Cup coverage starts today at 4:30pm, RTÉ Two, with Australia vs Netherlands.

Laura Dern talks to Ten about Fault In Our Stars

Actress Laura Dern has spoken to RTÉ TEN's Harry Guerin about working with Shailene Woodley in the movie adaptation of best-selling novel The Fault In Our Stars which is out this Thursday.

In the movie, Woodley plays Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient, while Dern portrays her mother.

Harry asked Dern what she learned from the young stars on the set of the film, who also include Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff.

"Interestingly, like the message of John Green, I would say I was reminded by all of them, Ansel, Shay and Nat, about the enthusiasm of living," Dern says. "You know it's really an exciting age. You're getting turned on to everything - music, life, art, film.

"It is easy, once you've done something for years, to be like 'Oh my God we're going to work' and then you're with other people who are like 'Oh my God, we're at work this is amazing, we're in a great movie!' And so it reminds you of the gratitude."

Harry also asked Dern if she thought about playing the role of Hazel Grace at the same age while looking at Woodley's performance:

Click on the video link above to watch the full interview with Laura Dern.

Dern said: "Getting close to her (Woodley) I have been reminded of myself at her age, being a professional, being an actor and hanging out with grown-ups and finding them the most relatable, because she's so adult and wise, but also being a child."

The Fault in Our Stars is in Irish cinemas this Thursday, June 19.
