Dyer "overwhelmed" by EastEnders

New EastEnders star Danny Dyer has described his role in the BBC soap as "another level" of fame.

In an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show to air on ITV this Saturday, Dyer, who plays Mick Carter, says: "I can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by it. You're brought up watching it and all of a suddenly you are there."

Dyer continues: "The other thing you worry about is calling her Dot or calling him Phil. It's weird, because I was talking to Shane Richie and he called me Mick. I thought, '**** that, I've been trying everything in my power not to call him Alfie and he Micked me off'."

Dyer says the current storyline, where Mick's son Johnny (Sam Strike) told his family he was gay, was "a real positive thing".

He says: "A lot of young gay men, who hadn't come out yet, they saw that scene and I was getting letters from these guys saying they came out the next day because of it. That's a powerful thing and I was really proud to be associated with that.

"They [the producers and writers] spun it on the head for me, because obviously my perception and what people think I'm about - that I was going to react badly - and instead I just cuddled him and said, 'Listen, it's fine, I love you, no problem'."

RTÉ says of the non-audience sitcom's titular family: "Tony (Niall Gaffney) and Carmel (Philippa Dunne) are parents to Ciara (Amy Stephenson) and Rory (Rory Connolly), who are both still at home because the state of the Irish economy has forced them all back together."

RTÉ adds: "Even Ciara's new boyfriend Graham (Shane Langan) is forced to move in and family friend Martin (Owen Roe) always seems to be hanging around mending bits and pieces, as well as accidentally becoming trapped in the wall cavity."

Back to the Future to become a musical

Classic 1980s film Back to the Future has been transformed into a musical by original director Robert Zemeckis.

A stage version of the hit 1985 movie - which starred Michael J Fox as time-travelling teen Marty McFly - will debut in the West End in 2015.

Bob Gale, who co-wrote the three films in the series with Zemeckis, said: "The Back to the Future Musical is a project that Bob Zemeckis and I have been exploring for almost 10 years. We're thrilled to be at last in partnership with a creative and producing team that will create a show that is true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake."

Den of Geek further quotes Gale as saying: "We intend to use music from the movie along with brand new songs to make a version of Back to the Future that is fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage. We can't think of a better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film."

Alan Silvestri will co-write the music and lyrics with songwriter Glen Ballard.

Marty Whelan reveals all about hair transplant

RTÉ presenter Marty Whelan has revealed that he underwent two hair transplants because he works "in a business where appearance matters."

Speaking to the current edition of the RTÉ Guide, The Winning Streak presenter and host of RTÉ lyric fm's Marty in The Morning said, "If I wanted to look younger I could have got rid of my moustache. That would have made me look younger, but I like the moustache. It is a trademark now."

57-year-old Marty revealed that he had what he jokingly calls his first "plantation" in December 2012 and the second last summer in a procedure in which some his old hair was transplanted from the back of his head to the less hirsute front.

He says that he could yet "play lead guitar with Led Zeppelin", adding that he watched The Life of Pi on his iPad during the procedure.

Whelan, who has been married to wife Maria since 1985 and who is the father of Jessica (23) and Thomas (20), told the Guide, "I'm in a business where your appearance matters and if you don't look right on TV that is hardly conducive to a long future."

In the interview with the RTÉ Guide, Marty also talks about the death of his much-loved mother Lily at the age of 95 last October. His father, Seán, passed away in 1998 and Marty, who has no siblings, says that for the first time in his life he now feels like an only child.

"People would sometimes ask me: 'Were you lonely when you were young?' But I wasn't. I had loads of friends and all that. But this is the first time that I really realise what it means to be an only child."

You can read the full interview with Marty in the current edition of the RTÉ Guide which is out now.

Maura Derrane announces pregnancy

Written By Unknown on Senin, 27 Januari 2014 | 23.37

RTÉ Today presenter, Maura Derrane has announced that she is expecting her first child saying that she and husband TD John Deasy are very "...happy, it's great news".

A few months ago Derrane was on the Tubridy on 2fm show and said that she was not interested in having children, at that moment and time but this morning Ryan rang the presenter to congratulate her.

He joked: "Well you're the dark horse, aren't you?!"

The 43-year-old responded: "I'm a bit of a secret noodle, I have to admit.

"It was probably the best thing I ever did was say to you 'No, no babies' because people stopped asking me.

"To be honest, I was just so sick of the usual 'Aww when are you going to have a baby. It was just like enough already!

"I never said never, it's the right time in life, different times for everyone, just perfect for us.

"I'm nearly five months and I've managed to hide it until now. I've been really lucky in that I haven't really shown much. I think people at work just thought I'd had a few mince pies too many over Christmas!"

She finished by saying: "I'm happy so it's great news."

Frank secures US distribution at Sundance

Lenny Abrahamson's Frank has secured US distribution at the Sundance Film Festival.

The offbeat comedy made its world premiere to critical acclaim at this year's Sundance. Magnolia Pictures subsequently acquired North American rights to the film after intense distributor interest.

Director Abrahamson said: "I'm delighted that Frank has found a home in the US with Magnolia. I know that the team there has a genuine passion for Frank. Along with their skill and experience this makes them the right partners to bring the film to its audience there."

Frank sees Abrahamson (What Richard Did, Garage, Adam & Paul) tell the story of a brilliant and eccentric musician (Michael Fassbender), who wears a giant fake head at all times.

The musical comedy also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domhnall Gleeson and Scoot McNairy.

It is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedian Chris Sievey, as well as other musicians such as Captain Beefheart and Daniel Johnson.

James Hickey, Chief Executive, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said: "We are delighted that Frank has received such a positive international reaction after its World Premiere at Sundance.

"Lenny Abrahamson is one of Ireland's leading directors and Frank showcases a host of Irish talent including Irish actors Domhnall Gleeson and Michael Fassbender. We hope this US sale will be the first of many international deals signed for this film."

Frank will be released in Ireland in May.

Adele stays in bed for Grammy Awards

Rather than turn up to the Grammys, Adele spent the evening at home in bed.

The 25-year-old Londoner won her tenth Grammy for Bond theme tune Skyfall, but was unable to attend the ceremony at Los Angeles' Staples Center last night.

She tweeted her disappointment that she couldn't collect it in person: "Wish I was there! Thank you for the grammy! (My 10th one! Whhaaa?) Have a wonderful night I'm in bed now, feeling very restless x."

Adele has been nominated for 13 Grammys during her career and last night she triumphed over Lana Del Ray's Young and Beautiful for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and Coldplay's Atlas from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

She has now won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy for Skyfall.

Colin Farrell: Affleck will kill it as Batman

Colin Farrell hopes Ben Affleck will ''kill it'' as Batman in delayed Man of Steel sequel, Superman vs Batman.

Speaking to Total Film, Farrell said: ''I always enjoyed watching him, as a director he's extraordinary too, but his work in The Town and Argo, he was so fantastic in both those films.

"In Argo, it was such a controlled performance. I think he'll kill it as Batman. I hope he does and shuts the naysayers up.''

''Good luck to him. I think he'll do a great job. As an actor, I don't know that I know anyone that's improved as much as he has. That sounds like a s**t thing to say.''

37-year-old Farrell also reflected on his own career to date, adding: ''As a testament to how OK I am with where I am in my life now, I would do it all the same, but I would be damn tempted to change a few things.

"And maybe I would change a few things, but I'd change them with the awareness that I was taking a massive gamble and that I could have done films that were better received than some of the ones I did and I wouldn't be in as good a place as I feel blessed to be in now.''

Bruce covers Special AKA at first ever SA gig

Bruce Springsteen kicked off his first ever tour of South Africa last night (January 26) with a rousing rendition of The Special AKA's protest song Free Nelson Mandela.

The Boss avoided playing South Africa during the Apartheid era and said that while he had never met Mandela, he felt honoured to have just "been alive on this Earth at the same time".

Speaking to Sky News before the gig in Cape Town, Springsteen said he was inspired by the late South African President's ability to forgive those who jailed him for 27 years. "You just don't often get people like that." he said.

Free Nelson Mandela was written by Jerry Dammers and released in 1984. It was a No 6 hit in Ireland at the time.

In 1985, Springsteen joined U2, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Steven Van Zandt, founder of Artists Against Apartheid, to record Sun City in protest against the whites-only resort of the same name.

Alfonso Cuaron receives Directors Guild award

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 26 Januari 2014 | 23.38

Alfonso Cuaron won the Directors Guild of America award last night for his hit film Gravity.

Gravity's leading lady Sandra Bullock attended the ceremony to show her support for Cuaron as he was awarded the honour by last year's winner Ben Affleck.

In his acceptance speech Cuaron said: "This is truly an honour and I'm humbled by it. I still have this teen crush on other directors. "

The Directors Guild of America have a good record at predicting the Best Director Oscar winners. Last year's winner Ben Affleck was only the seventh DGA winner to not receive an Oscar in the 65 years the ceremony has been running as his film Argo was not nominated by the Academy.

Gravity faces stiff competition however in the Oscar race with Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), Martin Scorsese (Wolf of Wall Street), David O. Russell (American Hustle) and Alexander Payne (Nebraska) also nominated in the Best Director category.

Ten's TV Highlights for January 25

Una Healy Foden of The Saturdays makes quite a splash with her debut on Splash! A new documentary from TG4 on Scottish bard Robbie Burns, and a look at the career of British prog rockers Genesis.

Robert Burns TG4, 9.20pm

Robert Burns has a well-deserved reputation as the national bard of Scotland and he has described himself as a composer and collector of traditional song first, and a poet second. This new film presents a fresh examination of his short (he died aged 37) but remarkable life. We start with a look at his childhood in Alloway and follow his tempestuous life through the influence of the Masonic tradition, the central role of women, and the enduring appeal of his famous songs and poems, including Auld Lang Syne, Tam o' Shanter, Red Red Rose and Ae Fond Kiss. Recommended.

Discovering: Genesis, Sky Arts, 8.30pm

Long before Genesis turned into a flatulent corporate rock band in the mid-eighties, they were one of the more intriguing of Britain's progressive acts. With a flambouyant Peter Gabriel at the helm, this quintessentially English band married folk pastorals with prog rock of elemental force. After Gabriel walked out of the machinery in 1975, they mostly failed to imitate the Barrett/Floyd trajectory and instead rushed to pomposity and irrelevance with fluff like Invisible Touch and the mind-warping banality of We Can't Dance. This documentary examines their all-important roots, which can be traced back to the Surrey school days of Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins, through to their evolution into a band for accountants (mostly their own) and lonely Commodore 64 owners. We still hope for Genesis to finally make their Exodus but stay vigilant music fans - there are rumours that they are about to reform . . .

Early Genesis: talented one at very back

Splash, ITV, 6.45pm

It's the fourth dive-off of the new series and finally we get to see Saturdays star Una Healy Foden spring off the board. Una says (modestly), "As a former child swimming champion, I've always loved the water so Splash! is a brilliant opportunity to get back to my roots and master a new skill. The band will be there on the night cheering me on, so hopefully having their support will help me conquer the inevitable nerves and give it my best shot." Also taking part in tonight's heat of the show that is about so much more than ogling slebs in their swimming trunks are former Rugby Union player Austin Healey, comedienne Jenny Éclair, TV presenter Pollyanna Woodward (me neither), and Paralympic athlete Richard Whitehead.

Fearne Cotton stuns at National TV Awards

Fearne Cotton stole the show at the National TV Awards in an off-white, vintage inspired gown.

The presenter went for her usual, slightly off-kilter style in this beautiful and simple dress, which featured draped, sheer sleeves embellished with silver embroidery.

She finished off the look with a boxy silver and gold clutch, gothic nail polish and a smattering of rings. As ever, her hair and makeup were perfection, with a matte coral lip, golden eyes and tousled, beachy waves keeping the overall effect cool and modern.

Also impressing in white was X Factor presenter Caroline Flack, who showed off her pins in tailored shorts, paired with a V-neck top and oversized blazer. The outfit, which screamed Stella McCartney, was set off by bronze strappy heels and a leopard print bag.

Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote went for a 1920s inspired look, in an embellished, cream floor sweeper, which she complimented with a strong lip and brow.

Her fellow Corrie co-star Brooke Vincent provided a welcome splash of colour on the red carpet in a mustard chiffon gown with cross-over straps and cut-out detailing which she paired with a snakeskin green clutch.

Dancing on Ice star Ashley Roberts went for a silver figure-hugging number, completing the modern style with slicked-back hair and mauve lipstick.

Christine Bleakley posed with fiancé Frank Lampard in a chic strapless black dress with a waterfall hemline.

Tess Daly also went for black on the night, but strayed from safe, LBD territory in a jumpsuit.

Samantha Womack also eschewed a traditional dress on the red carpet, opting for flared trousers and a blazer.

Kym Marsh posed alongside her Coronation Street co-star Anthony Cotton in a charcoal sequin gown with sheer panelling at the bust.

Abbey Clancy looked sensational in a sleek coral dress with a thigh-high slit.

Michelle Keegan also stunned in a similarly-shaped frock, this time in mint green.

Kian Egan posed with his wife Jodi Albert, who went for a pretty lace and tulle dress.

Laura Whitmore led the fashion pack in a cream silk crop top and asymmetrical skirt.

Kelly Brook dared to bare in a plunging-neckline dress with bell sleeves and a high slit.

Katherine Jenkins wants Glee cameo

Popera star Katherine Jenkins plans to do more acting in the future and would like a role on high school musical TV series Glee.

The 33-year-old Welsh singer, who made her acting debut on the 2010 Doctor Who' Christmas special, says she would like to appear in a music-related show.

Speaking at the Ritz Hotel in London at the announcement of her new three-album deal with Decca Records. Jenkins told BANG Showbiz: "Doctor Who took me out of my comfort zone massively, but I did really enjoy it. I still think it needs to be something that combines acting and music. That's what was lovely about that role, she was a singing character.

''If it was a musical film... Maybe something like Glee! I feel at the moment I have so many singing things and I don't get them all. It would have to be something I really cared about to take me away from that because singing would always come first.''

When asked if she ever feels under pressure to vamp up her image, Jenkins said: ''What I do is so different. It's a niche thing. I appreciate pop music, I've never felt any pressure to do that.

''I certainly have always appreciated the glamour side of music. Classical music can sometimes be glamorous. I've always been a girly girl, so the record company has never had to make that up, that was always [part of my image].''

Wanted: Cork kid to play Keano in new movie

An Irish director is looking for a Cork kid with "a thousand yard stare" to play the 11-year-old Roy Keane in a new short film he is planning about the football star's childhood.

Film-maker Dave Tynan is making a 12-minute short about the boy Roy and he's on the look out for an actor who can play the part.

Speaking on Dublin station Phantom 105 this morning, Tynan said: "It's important to me that we are going to use Cork kids. To say I played Keane when I was younger, that should be an easy sell to a kid in Cork. We are going to cast down there and shoot down there as much as we can.

"It cracks me up to think of Roy Keane aged 11 going into his local shop with all the seriousness we associate with him now."

Tynan's film will be called Rockmount after the club Keane joined as a child and the director describes the short as "an imagined childhood of Roy Keane". He hopes to begin shooting in March and to complete in time for the Galway Film Fleadh.

"The film is based around that idea, that he is exactly the same person but a kid. For me there is a bit of humour in that," Tynan said.

"Keane has fascinated me for ages. He's been around. He's been in the news. I always wondered what [what Keane is like] because he is so single-minded."

Dolores and Jamelia bond over motherhood

Written By Unknown on Senin, 20 Januari 2014 | 23.37

Jamelia and Dolores O'Riordan bonded over motherhood in the music industry on last night's episode of The Voice.

After watching 30-year-old pregnant singer Catherine Hughes perform the pair discussed how tough it is for women in the music industry.

O'Riordan said: "Men have no idea how much more difficult it is for women in the rock and roll industry and while we are trying to give birth, breastfeed, all they do is have a good time."

Jamelia added: "We are here to reproduce but it doesn't mean we can't get up on stage and sing. We are women - that's what we are meant to do."

O'Riordan added: "We are obviously the superior sex."

Dolores is proving to be a big hit with the contestants and won over Dublin Gospel Choir singer Michelle Revins ahead of Kian Egan who was also hoping to work with the singer.

After she turned her chair around following Revins' impressive performance of Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' song Hurt, she said: "Oh my God, I felt you took your hand and you put it into my heart and you pulled my heart out. It's so raw. It's brilliant."

Michelle Keegan "gutted" about Corrie exit

Coronation Street's Michelle Keegan is "gutted" her character Tina McIntyre will be killed off the popular soap.

The 26-year-old decided to quit her role of Tina McIntyre after six years on the soap, but she admits she had hoped for a more uplifting exit storyline.

Speaking to OK! magazine, Keegan said: "I was gutted to find out, but I was gutted for Tina more than anything because I always thought she was one of those characters that could come back in the future.

"She's got no family and I thought a relative could come in for her because she's not had a very good life. Her dad died, she hasn't had much luck with men - and then her life is over."

Michelle further explained that she was confused about the producers' decision to kill her off, adding: "The producers' said, 'That's fine, we'll leave the door open' and then told me they were killing Tina off, which surprised me a bit.

"Initially, I think they were going to leave the door open then they had a big story conference and this amazing plot came up that was too hard to pass. Looking at it now, I'd rather go out with a bang than off in a black cab. Corrie is brilliant so I know I will enjoy this as an actress."

However, Keegan further admitted that she is "fine" with the decision, saying: "I am totally fine with it as the writing will be amazing and I work with so many talented people.

"I also would have always been asked that question, 'Are you going to go back to 'Corrie' in the future?' So it's ruled a line under that."

It's believed that Keegan's character will be murdered in a mystery plot, in May.

Country superstar Garth Brooks will play two comeback gigs at Dublin's Croke Park on July 25 and 26 in what will be his first Irish concerts in 17 years.

"I was quoted then as saying 'When this stadium is finished, I would love to come back and try to fill it again . . . this time to the brink.' . . . and we're back to do just that."

Review: James Vincent McMorrow - Post Tropical ***

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 17 Januari 2014 | 23.37

Three years after his best-selling debut Early in The Morning, Dubliner James Vincent McMorrow departs more verdant pastures and suits up for something icier and lonelier on this sonorous follow-up.

Post Tropical is a perfectly poised suite of songs gliding along on electro soul, fractured beats, and full blast symphonic overload. It is certainly indebted to the deep space despair of James Blake on certain tracks but JVM's spectral voice also voyages into John Marytn-like minimalism while his keening falsetto can match the hymnal wonder of Jeff Buckley.

The brilliantly constructed opener Cavalier, an epic tale of first love featuring handclaps, keyboards and rolling drums, is bewitching, All Points is a stunning rhythmical workout, the title track erupts with pure emotion, and the bold and brassy Gold is one of several songs on which JVM loses his coiled and watchful cool.

It's all constructed with filigreed detail and real grace (naturally there is a song called Glacier) but Post Tropical can also be ponderous in places. McMorrow's awestruck choirboy vocal style is an acquired taste but that not-quite-there voice and those occasionally impenetrable lyrics do create a sense of intrigue. Multi-layered yet stark and beautiful, Post Tropical mostly keeps the temperature at a low and lovely simmer. ***
