Gillian Wright who plays Jean Slater on EastEnders is set to leave the BBC soap.

The 53-year-old has been on the show for eight years and is expected to start shooting her final scenes this week. She will appear on the show until October.

Wright said in a statement "It has been a huge privilege to play Jean Slater these last eight years.

"I treasure the viewer's care and love for the character not only through her hard times but through all the laughter too.

"I will miss EastEnders enormously, but it is time for me to step back and enjoy other acting challenges.

"I would love Jean to return to The Square one day, so let's hope this is not goodbye, but au revoir."

It is reported that Jean's departure from the show is connected to the new character Ollie with whom Jean has developed a close friendship.

And no wonder - he presented her with some fresh rhubarb in the Queen Vic last night!

Nile Rodgers given the all-clear from cancer

Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers has been given the all-clear in his two-year battle with prostate cancer

Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers has been given the all-clear in his two-year battle with prostate cancer.

Rodgers shared the good news on Twitter last night (July 30th) but he also sounded a note of cautious when he added, "I never celebrate much when I get an All Clear because in 6 months I'll go through the same drama."

The 60-year-old guitarist and producer who has worked with Madonna, David Bowie and, more recently, French disconauts Daft Punk has documented his battle with cancer on his blog.

In an interview earlier this year, Rodgers said that his work on Daft Punk's new album Random Access Memories helped him overcome his illness. And he says that scoring the biggest-selling single of the year in the UK with Get Lucky may be the sweetest hit song of his life.

"I think this particular experience rates very high, because two years ago I was stricken with cancer just right out of the clear blue sky. I had no indication it was coming on, I was what is called asymptomatic and when they found it, it was diagnosed as incredibly aggressive," he said.

"So I went from having no symptoms to 'you can die any moment and you have to take this very seriously'. It just didn't make any sense, it was so completely insane.

"And from that moment I decided I was going to work as much as I could, play as many concerts, do as many records, because that's what I live for. I said to myself, if I had a reason to get up the next day, hopefully I'll get up the next day because I just love to do my job."

He added, "Maybe this could feel more special than any other Number 1 record simply because of that. I was facing life and death issues and then to get something so rewarding as a Number 1 record is pretty amazing."

Rodgers, who is back in Ireland with Chic to play a short nationwide tour in October, also confirmed a "lost Chic album" had been discovered, and would get a release.

A ha!? Courtney Love reveals Alan Partridge taunts

Courtney Love, singer with Hole and widow of Kurt Cobain, says that she was subjected to taunts about Alan Partridge after her fling with Steve Coogan. Thing is - she didn't know who the fictional DJ and chat show host was

Courtney Love, singer with Hole and widow of Kurt Cobain, says that she was subjected to taunts about Alan Partridge after her fling with Steve Coogan. Thing is - she didn't know who the fictional DJ and chat show host was.

Love had a brief relationship with Coogan in 2005 but she says she only knew him as the actor who played Factory records boss Tony Wilson in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People.

"All it was, was a couple of ***** at the Sunset Marquis and I did not know he was Alan Partridge," she told the aptly-titled Love Magazine. "I thought he was Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People - someone I'd always had a daddy thing for.

"I had never seen Alan Partridge. But I was in a band with people who did know Alan Partridge, so I had to make a record with them constantly saying, 'Back of the net!'"

Meanwhile, Coogan (47) has been hitting the publicity trial for the upcoming Partridge movie Alpha Papa which is out next week.

Coogan was vocal in his criticism of the media during the Leveson Inquiry into press ethics and was awarded £40,000 damages from the News of The World after the now defunct Sunday tabloid admitted improperly obtaining information about his fling with Love.

However, in a recent interview with Radio Times magazine, the comedian denied that doing promotional interviews meant he had made a "Faustian pact" with the press.

"When my life has been the subject of tabloid intrusion what I have never done is get engaged in justifying myself," he said.

"Celebrities who go around apologising are pitiful and don't do themselves any favours. My closet is empty of skeletons as a result of the press."

Cowell expecting first child, says US report

Simon Cowell is expecting his first child with his friend's wife, according to a report in the US media.

Simon Cowell is expecting his first child with his friend's wife, according to a report in the US media.

Showbiz magazine US Weekly is claiming that multiple sources informed them that The X Factor guru and New York socialite Lauren Silverman are expecting a baby together.

According to an insider quoted by US Weekly, Silverman is "around 10 weeks along."

Silverman is married to real estate mogul Andrew Silverman, however, the magazine claims that she is planning on ending her marriage to be with Cowell.

A source said: "Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while. As their marriage deteriorated, she and Simon became close."

Representatives for Cowell have not yet commented on the story.

He split from his long-term girlfriend Mezhgan Hussainy earlier this year and has previously been romantically linked to Sinitta, Terri Seymour and Carmen Electra.

Spacey: TV learned lessons from the music industry

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Juli 2013 | 23.37

House of Cards star Kevin Spacey says that TV has "learned the lesson the music industry didn't learn" when it comes to new content.

House of Cards star Kevin Spacey has told RTÉ Ten that TV has "learned the lesson the music industry didn't learn" when it comes to new content.

While the music industry is in relative freefall due to technology that allows millions to download music for free, there's still a large market willing to pay for TV shows such as Spacey's political drama.

Spacey says that things have been gradually changing in terms of TV for some time. "The manner and the distribution model in which it has been put out there, has been one that I believe has been in the making for a number of years," he says.

"I always believed [and] have been talking about it for about eight years, that we were eventually going to see one of these companies that was making a tremendous amount of money as a portal for content, waiting to eventually get into providing the content and being a part of the story telling process.

"So it didn't surprise me, I was incredibly pleased that Netflix was the first, they have been tremendous partners, and I think in some ways maybe this proves that the way in which an audience has been able to find the series, that we have learned the lesson the music industry didn't learn.

"Give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in at a reasonable price and they will buy it and they won't steal it."

You can read the full interview with Kevin Spacey here.

Disney and Harvey Weinstein are teaming up to bring Irish author Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl to the big screen.

Weinstein announced that Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the adaptation.

The Hollywood Reporter says the live-action feature will be based on the first and second instalments of the best-selling children's series from Disney Publishing Worldwide.

Weinstein said in a statement "If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy.

"I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film."

The film rights to Artemis Fowl were originally bought by Miramax in 2001 when Weinstein ran the company.

The screenplay for this adaptation is set to be written by Michael Goldenberg who penned the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Richard Curtis may quit directing movies

British comedy king Richard Curtis has said that he may stop directing movies after the release of his latest film - the ironically titled About Time.

British comedy king Richard Curtis has said that he may stop directing movies after the release of his latest film - the ironically titled About Time.

The British filmmaker directed Love, Actually and The Boat that Rocked, as well as writing hits such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones's Diary.

Speaking in the latest issue of UK movie magazine Empire, Curtis suggested that About Time would "probably" be his directorial farewell.

"I waited a while in order to write [About Time]. This probably will be the last film I will direct," he said. When asked why, Curtis replied: "I don't know. Just a feeling . . . just a feeling."

"It feels like a summing-up to me. We'll see how things turn out," he added, confessing that it took him a long time "to be wise or experienced enough to dare to direct" a movie.

"Many of the comedies I like the most, from Woody Allen's films to Monty Python's films, have been directed by the people who write them," he explained.

"So it was quite a logical thing, but I wasn't ready to do it at that point. And when I reached that point, I was ready to do it."

About Time stars Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson and opens in September. It centres on a 21-year-old who discovers that he can travel through time and manipulate events that occur in his life.

The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi is the latest name linked to the role of the 12th Doctor Who after picking up a surprise surge of interest at UK-based bookmakers.

The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi is the latest name linked to the role of the 12th Doctor Who after picking up a surprise surge of interest at UK-based bookmakers.

According to bookies William Hill, there has been a flurry of bets on Capaldi - who played foul-mouthed fixer Malcolm Tucker on the BBC political satire - taking over from Matt Smith in the sci-fi show at the end of the year.

The 55-year-old Scottish actor is known to be a huge Doctor Who fan and has already appeared on the show, starring as Caecilius in the story The Fires of Pompeii, broadcast in 2008.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed at the recent Comic-Con in San Diego that casting a much older Doctor is a distinct possibility.

"We've never not considered an older Doctor," said Moffat. "It is completely on all the lists we make - there are absolutely older Doctors."

Review: AlunaGeorge - Body Music

The UK duo's debut is slinky, sinuous and sexy. It's also more than a lttle strange. Read our review here

UK duo Aluna Francis and George Reid update the minimalistic, futuristic beats of early noughties producers Timbaland and The Neptunes on their fantastic debut. Slick, sinuous and sexy, it burbles over with the kind of exacting dance soul last heard from Aaliyah and even Destiny's Child on their wilder rhythmical flights of fancy.

They can also be as warped as Scandinavian weird brains The Knife and with the likes of infectious and relentless You Know You Like It and their terrific collaboration with Disclosure on White Noise, they also know how to craft a sure-fire hit record.

Reid betrays his previous life as guitarist with math rockers Colour in the way his beats and oblique rhythms spin and then lock around the breathy glottal stops and drops of part-time model Aluna Francis' divine voice. Your Drums seems to be made up of a series of strange oscillations and controlled wobbles, rapid fire drum and bass while You Know You Like It is just a relatively unadorned slow release of sheer joy.

It's easy to get lost music as effortlessly celestial as this and while Francis' child-like coo of a voice is sweet and seductive, she is no ethereal sprite. She's got plenty to say – Bad Idea is as good a kiss-off as No Scrubs by TLC, surely an influence, while Attracting Flies would be the most peeved-off song of the year if it didn't sound so damn gorgeous. The heads-down gallop of Lost and Found pings about madly with sped-up and slowed-down vocals and rushes of digitalism. It must be the catchiest and cleverest song of the year.

Maybe Body Music is too front-loaded with the good stuff and the proven hits, leaving the second half rather limp in comparison. The exacting funk and nervy beats tend to drift off into keyboard washes and rambling nu-soul blandishments.

Best Believing is very good but it lacks the insouciance of the zippy, ice-cool run of those opening tracks - it almost sounds, well, conventional. Superstar and Just a Touch may not stand out either and closing the album with a faithful cover of Montell Jordan's This is How We Do It may even take the edge off what is a fresh and exciting debut.

No matter because AlunaGeorge deserve everything coming their way for subverting pop and giving it some actual substance. Body Music is altogether strange and altogether beautiful.

Samara Weaving leaving Home and Away

Home and Away star Samara Weaving has announced that she is quitting the show.

The actress, who has played the character of Indigo Walker on the Aussie soap for the past four years, has already filmed her final scenes.

She spoke to TV Week about her departure, saying: "Storyline-wise, it was perfect timing. Plus, with Home and Away so well-known overseas, I felt it was time to pursue other directions and really start a more versatile career."

Speaking about her final days on set, she added: "It was really sad! It's like when you leave school - you've done such hard work, all your best friends are around and it's really depressing, because if you want to see each other again, you have to plan rather than just being thrown into a situation where it's a given.

"It's exciting as well because I get to travel and do things that I've been thinking of for a while."

Weaving added that she wants to spend the next year doing "lots of travel, auditions and [living] the actor's life".

She said: "I love the work coming out of London right now, so I'd definitely like to set up camp there for a while, just for something different. I've got lots of friends and family in the UK. I think I'll be back and forth, depending on job opportunities."

Tracy Piggott leaves Celebrity MasterChef

Sports presenter Tracy Piggott became the latest celebrity to hang up her apron on last night's Celebrity MasterChef Ireland.

Sports presenter Tracy Piggott became the latest celebrity to hang up her apron on last night's Celebrity MasterChef Ireland.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN after her departure from the show Piggott said "I really did enjoy it. I was really amazed that I got to the halfway point and I was really proud of myself, but I really do wish I could have stayed a bit longer."

She also went on to tip news presenter Aengus Mac Grianna to win the show saying "Aengus, I am sure Aengus is going to win it! Absolutely and I have thought that from day one. I thought his dessert was amazing. It was just beautiful looking and I am just so fond of him. We had some laughs and aside from that, his presentation, the way he is organised around his pod and his whole approach, I walked out of the kitchen thinking, yeah; he is going to win it!"

Last night the contestants were given a dessert masterclass by world renowned pastry chef Claire Clark who tasked them with recreating her retro summer trifle. All the remaining six contestants were praised for the efforts with Maia Dunphy and Yvonne Keating receiving particular mention.

Judges Nick Munier and Dylan McGrath then asked the contestants to take what they had learned from Claire and take a trip down memory lane to create a dessert from their childhood that holds fond memories for them.

Athlete David Gillick was singled out for his effort for the flavour of his offering while Maia Dunphy was again praised for her presentation.

The judges felt that Tracy was not as progressing as quickly as the other contestants having failed to find second gear while plating up her offering of Roquefort and Honey Ice cream and it was decided that she would be the latest contestant sent home.

Still remaining in the competition are Mac Grianna, Keating, Gillick, Dunphy and Irish Times Consumer Affairs Correspondent Conor Pope.

It would build a road to open access to the mountain and to get their hands on one of the last remaining leaders Michael Dwyer. The road took nine years to build. Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad's creator, has confirmed they've made a behind-the-scenes documentary with footage from the show's final season.

The two-hour long programmes is expected to be included as a DVD and Blu-Ray extra and promises to give viewers a very special look at the final episodes, with appearances from Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and the rest of the cast.

Gilligan revealed the news during a press conference this weekend and also teased the show's finale.

He said: "I am very cautious in my estimation, in general, of how people will respond to things. I hope I am not wildly wrong in my estimate that most people are going to dig the ending."

Cranston joked: "Walt has a large reservoir of good to be shared with everyone else, and he spreads his joy throughout the last eight episodes.

"I think everyone will be satisfied with the ending where we hug it out."

Breaking Bad returns to AMC on August 11 in the US and will be available exclusively to Netflix customers in Ireland the following day.

Katy Perry finds acting harder than music

Katy Perry has revealed that she thinks having a career in acting is much harder than in music.

The 28-year-old singer, who voices Smurfette in The Smurfs, reckons acting is not something you can just "roll into".

Speaking to Radar, the Teenage Dream hitmaker said: "It's definitely a lot of effort to be an actor, and it's not something just anyone can roll into.

"I think you get a lot of people thinking, 'If I can act, I can sing; if I can sing, I can act', and it's just not true."

She added: "I think that it's actually harder and it takes more time than a music career. You wake up at four or five am. That's commitment.

"If the movie would start filming at 11am then I would do it."

Perry, who is currently working on her third studio album, also said that music will always be her main focus: "I have it inside me and I'll never lose it."

Johnny Depp has said that he feels overworked and that he is "not too far away" from quitting acting for good.

Johnny Depp has said that he feels overworked and that he is "not too far away" from quitting acting for good.

In an interview to be aired tomorrow morning, Monday, on BBC Breakfast, the actor said: "When you add up the amount of dialogue you say per year and you realise you've said written words more than you've had a chance to say your own words, that becomes an insane option for a human being.

"Are there quieter things I wouldn't mind doing? Yes, I wouldn't mind that. I wouldn't say I am dropping out any second but I would say it's not too far away."

When asked if he would retire before the Alice in Wonderland sequel or Pirates of the Caribbean 5, the 50-year-old added: "No, I think we're alright in those categories."

In June, the actor told Rolling Stone magazine: "I can't say that I'd want to be doing this for another 10 years."

Not only is Lady Gaga set to appear at this year's MTV Video Music Awards next month, but she's also set to perform her much-anticipated new single.

Ahead of the release of her new album, Artpop, which will be available for pre-order on September 1, ahead of its release in November, the singer will perform the single (rumoured to be called Applause) at the event in Brooklyn, New York.

The singer previously performed at the awards in 2009, and of course her meat dress took centre stage in 2010, before her male alter-ego took centre stage in 2011. Last year she took time out and tweeted her views from the comfort of her own home.

This year the singer, who has won 13 MTV Awards, is set to give one of her first live performances following hip surgery, after which she cancelled 21 tour dates in February.

The awards will take place on August 21 in Brooklyn's Barclays Centre and Lady Gaga is the first performance act to be announced. Watch this space to see who else will take to the stage over the coming weeks.

Maia's ballooning around on this week's Masterchef

In Sunday night's episode the contestants receive a Masterclass from pastry chef extraordinaire Claire Clark, and Maia Dunphy sets herself a tough chocolate challenge - with some balloons.

In Sunday night's episode the contestants receive a Masterclass from pastry chef extraordinaire Claire Clark, and Maia Dunphy sets herself a tough chocolate challenge - with some balloons.

The first challenge on tomorrow night's episode sees the contestants trying to recreate Claire Clark's deconstructed summer fruit trifle.

Claire, who worked at the legendary 3 Michelin starred French Laundry in California, has high praise for Maia Dunphy.

She said: "I honestly have to say you've been an absolute pleasure and joy to watch work. I was mightily impressed I have to say.

"It looks amazing. I hope its going taste as good as it looks so I'll have to destroy it at this stage!"

Maia, who blushes at the high praise, was then offered a job the Claire, who received an MBE in 2011 in July 2011.

Claire said: "The only criticism I have – the soaking of that sponge just for a fraction longer would have really nailed it – otherwise it's perfect. "

She added: "If you ever need a job..."

The second challenge in this episode is for the celebrities to recreate a favourite dessert from their childhood. Maia chooses a "simple vanilla semi-freddo, dark chocolate and a bit of fruit and cream."

She explains to Dylan: "We never really had dessert in my house. My mum would buy Viennetta for special occasions and hide the box in the bin."

As part of her presentation Maia wants to use balloons to create a chocolate basket.

She said: "What I'm trying to do is make a little basket to sit the ice cream in to make it look slightly more impressive because Claire is here.

"Hopefully that will work so I'm going to pipe it in little spirals around. I tried it before but it burst and I have to repaint my ceiling – that's how much mess I made! So I haven't actually done it before when it's worked…"

She added: "if it bursts, honestly it will just go everywhere – I'm not exaggerating when they burst it was a disaster, it went everywhere – my face was covered! Will I try this on TV?"

Will Maia's balloon trick work? Or will the MasterChef kitchen be splattered in chocolate? Tune in to find out on Sunday on RTÉ One at 21:30.c

How cute does Lady Mary Crawley's (Michelle Dockery) baby George look next to his cousin Sybil and her dad Tom Branson, played by Irish man Allen Leech?

Elsewhere Lady Rose MacClare is set to continue to cause havoc and thankfully regulars Sophie McShera (Daisy) and Jim Carter (Carson) are set to return to Downton for the new series in September.

The Fall's Séainín Brennan cast in Wild

The Fall star Séainín Brennan has been cast in the new romantic drama Wild.

The Fall star Séainín Brennan has been cast in the new romantic drama Wild.

The Belfast native, who played bereaved mother Liz Tyler in the acclaimed BBC-RTÉ series, will begin filming for the new film this month alongside Shameless USA actress Emma Greenwell and Silk's Tom Hughes.

Wild is based on the true story of Mary Reynolds (Greenwell), who became the first Irish winner of the Chelsea Flower Show gold medal in 2002.

Brennan said of the news: "It's very exciting to be cast in my first feature film. What drew me to Wild is the brilliantly written, fun, quirky script by Vivienne DeCourcy and I just love a story that champions the underdog!"

She continued: "My character, Dr Jaqui Finch, is a far cry from Liz Tyler in The Fall. She's glamorous and fashionable but she has her own set of problems and issues.

"I really enjoy taking on a variety of roles, as I like to continually challenge myself and take on a new persona. It allows me to go on that person's journey without having the burden of their problems in real life."

Scriptwriter DeCourcy will also direct the film, which has been funded by the Irish Film Board, RTÉ, Green Earth and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Wild will film in Ireland and Ethiopia.

Love/Hate watched by 738,000 in UK

738,000 viewers watched the very first episode of Love/Hate when it debuted on UK's Channel 5 last Wednesday night and the show has been picking up positive reviews too

738,000 viewers watched the very first episode of Love/Hate when it debuted on UK's Channel 5 last Wednesday night and the show has been picking up positive reviews too.

Seasons one and two have already aired on Scotland's STV channel and it has also been distributed to a number of foreign networks as well as being available on US streaming site Hulu.

Guardian critic and media commentator Mark Lawson said of the show, "Showing an Ireland in which God is slowly dying, Love/Hate is also located at a time when the economy is expiring quickly.

"Although the residue of the Euro-driven boom is still visible in the glittering buildings and the fleets of expensive wheels in the car showroom where one character works, the money has run out. `Ireland is f***ed for the next 10 years,' predicts John Boy in one speech before optimistically outlining the killings to be made by criminals."

However, at least one newcomer to the show struggled with the Dublin accents. "Anyone watching Love Hate with subtitles?!" Daniella Chaudry tweeted, "Can't understand an effing word!"

The Irish Independent quotes actor Peter Coonan, who plays Fran in the series which is due back on RTÉ later this year, as saying, "To see that many people watching the first episode is pretty amazing and hopefully with word of mouth and seeing the reviews more will be encouraged to turn on their tellies."

Susan Loughnane, who plays prostitute Debbie in the series, says she's excited about the show's continued success in the UK..

"I'm not in the first season, so I have a couple of weeks to chill out. I really enjoy my anonymity over there so it'll be different having people know me, if they do," she said.

The Wolverine - review

Hugh Jackman's X-Men spin-off The Wolverine opens in cinemas today, Thursday July 25, Harry Guerin puts on the 3D glasses.

Hugh Jackman's X-Men spin-off The Wolverine opens in cinemas today, Thursday July 25, Harry Guerin puts on the 3D glasses.

The box office bulldozing by Iron Man and The Avengers and a somewhat disappointing origins story in 2009 may have led some to regard Wolverine as yesterday's anti-hero superhero. However, older fans - those who experienced that dream-come-true summer of 2000 when a who-he? actor named Hugh Jackman made one of the greatest characters in comic history his own in the first X-Men movie - have been waiting to see the crown reclaimed and past wrongs righted.

In truth, Downey Jr and co needn't have sleepless nights: The Wolverine is more for the diehards than the casual blockbuster punter and - arguably a decade late and $30m of a budget short - won't do the business of its more-hyped contemporaries. It's still worth seeing, though; not perfect, but a welcome attempt at bringing some Blade-like grit to the Marvel movie universe.

Set in the aftermath of 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, this solo adventure finds a boozed-up, grieving and visions-haunted Logan/Wolverine (Jackman) travelling to Japan to reconcile with someone from his past (a nicely worked prologue). It's supposed to be a flying visit, but things turn very complex, very quickly, with the death-obsessed mutant now having to decide if there's something/one left worth living for. Maddeningly, the subtitles are used at random - one minute characters are talking Japanese to each other, the next it's English - but the body count is much more reliable, and commensurate with the existential angst.

With plenty of experience depicting outsiders and isolation in Heavy, Copland, Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma, James Mangold was a good choice for the director's chair following the departure of originally planned helmer Darren Aronofsky. The man is also obsessed with Westerns and this pulpy story mixes stranger-comes-to-town dynamics with Witness to create a movie with a hardboiled, 1970s feel. Looking like the Man with No Name in Robert Mitchum's overcoat from The Yakuza, Jackman is allowed to power up the darkness and intensity of his career-making character. The claws are used more often than in previous outings too, making you wish that we'd get an 18s cert Wolverine adventure somewhere down the line. Even for a 12A movie, this is suitably nasty and bone-crunching.

Like a lot of Marvel adaptations, the villains are crap and the franchise parameters result in a disappointing ending which, like the subtitles switch-off, doesn't credit the audience with having an appetite for something different. As for the 3D, it is as we've come to expect: about as necessary as an ashtray on a motorbike. Save some money and do the 2D version – and make sure to stick around for the closing credits.

Bono: 'Jagger's wrinkles make him more beautiful'

Sprightly young rock star pretender Bono has paid tribute to Elder Statesman Mick Jagger on the eve of the Stones man's 70th birthday.

Sprightly young rock star pretender Bono has paid tribute to Elder Statesman Mick Jagger on the eve of the Stones man's 70th birthday.

In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, the U2 singer says that he has become increasingly jealous of Jagger's wrinkles and has even compared him to famed Russian ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov.

"Mick looks a bit like Baryshnikov, like a ballet dancer from a different age. At the same time he still has a very beautiful face," said 53-year-old Bono.

"The wrinkles that run through it now have made it even more beautiful. Why? Because he wears those wrinkles well. I love his wrinkles."

Jagger turns 70 tomorrow (Friday) and is reported to be planning a bash to mark the big day. However, we're not sure if Bono has been invited. "I would like to see him on the day," he said. "And then I would like to carry his guitar case for him."

Maybe the invite never arrived because U2 surpassed The Stones to claim the highest grossing concert tour of all time in 2011. U2 made €554m from their 360° tour, but Bono said he owes his business skills to Mick.

"People despise Mick because they think he only thinks about money, but he is a businessman above all else," Bono said.

"The fact is, he understands the business. Why? Because the Stones lost a lot of money in the beginning. I have to kneel in reverence to what he has achieved.

"What I like about him as a person is that he always speaks his mind openly and he never talks much about himself. He is not a narcissistic person."

The Hit kicks off on Friday on RTÉ

The brand new music talent show The Hit, presented by Nicky Byrne and Aidan Power, kicks off on Friday July 26 on RTÉ One at 9:35pm, and 2fm is very much on board too.

The brand new music talent show The Hit, presented by Nicky Byrne and Aidan Power, kicks off on Friday July 26 on RTÉ One at 9:35pm, and 2fm is very much on board too.

Speaking to Louise McSharry on 2fm's morning show (10am to 1pm) Summer with Louise, radio presenters Cormac Battle and Ruth Scott said they have a big role to play on the night.

From 8pm Battle, who presents 2fm's The Battle Axe, will DJ live on 2fm in front of the audience in the O2 before the TV show begins, and then from 9pm to midnight Scott, who co-presents Weekenders, will present live from the Roadcaster at the venue.

Over the next six weeks of The Hit, RTÉ 2fm will also feature songs from the show and interviews with the presenters and songwriters.

Speaking about the event, Scott said: "I'm so excited – I saw this [The Hit] originally when it was done as part of the Format Farm on RTÉ where they got a load of different TV shows.

"This was the one that jumped out and this is the one that's going to be made – it's going to be on in the O2! Cormac Battle is going to be doing his best Dizzee Rascal with the live audience in the O2."

Battle explained the concept of The Hit: "I'll give it to you in a few bullet points about how it works: this Friday, there are six songwriters who have gone through the process of getting through - from thousands of entries - and they're in six pods.

"There are two artists - this week it is The Stunning and Julie Feeney. They are the artists who will potentially be performing and recording one of these songwriters' songs."

He continued: "Six pods, songwriters in them. Julie Feeney and I think Steve Wall of The Stunning, they race around as these people are playing their songs."

Battle added: "There's a speed element, they have to be very quick about it. They go into the pods listening to the song for a couple of minutes, as long as they can. They move into the next pod, each flying around to find a song which they like. Through that frenetic period they each have to pick two of the six [songs] so The Stunning would pick two…and Julie Feeney will pick two. Obviously, two songwriters are eliminated immediately.

"What happens then is they go away to a recording studio - I think it's Windmill Lane, big massive studio - with a producer and whittle the songs down again to one each and they record those two songs. Nobody knows the song they've [each] recorded. Then on the Friday they reveal the song they've done by playing it live in front of the songwriters. Someone is going to be very happy; someone is going to be very sad. Then that song gets released as a single."

Scott explained the 2fm link: "That song is going to be played, not only live on TV. It's also going out live on 2fm because I'm going to be outside in the Roadcaster and it doesn't matter what we're doing we are going to play the songs live."

She added: "Also, when the show is over, it's kind of Xtra Factor style. We're going to have the songwriters in; we're going to have Nicky Byrne and Aidan Power who are presenting it coming in. We're going to have Julie Feeney and Steve Wall; it's going to be brilliant."

When asked if he'd ever performed at the venue before, Battle said: "I have played the O2 in a band but I've never played as a superstar DJ, David Guetta style!"

Model Rozanna Purcell has again dismissed speculation that she and The Voice of Ireland mentor Bressie are an item, insisting they are "just friends".

There had been claims that Purcell had introduced the singer to her parents as her boyfriend but she told The Herald: "We're not together at all. He didn't visit my parents' house."

Purcell continued: "I actually haven't ever brought any of my ex-boyfriends back to my family house.

"I remember I used to go out with my neighbour so he obviously knew my family.

"But I have never done that whole thing because I haven't had that many serious boyfriends."

"I am still single," she added. "I don't really have that much time to have a boyfriend. I'm always modelling or training.

"I haven't spoken to Bressie about the stories because it happens to lots of people. You just have to focus on other things."

Already father to 13-month-old Jake, dad Tony spoke about the reaction to Owen's birth: "He's like a celebrity here - I was downstairs getting some air and people were coming up to me congratulating me on the arrival of Owen."

Tune into Breakfast with Hector on 2fm from 7am to 10am live on 2fm, 90-92fm, or listen via the RTÉ Radio Player www.rte.ie/radioplayer or on the RTÉ Radio App on your mobile device.

He added: "Word has spread throughout the hospital that Owen and the new prince share the exact same time and date and there is huge excitement around.

"We never expected this reaction in a million years but it just adds to our excitement. It's honestly a day (and time) that we will always remember."

However they didn't name their son after Prince William: "We had the name picked already as we saw the name Owen in a baby book some time ago and instantly liked it. Donna's dad name is William so his second was always going to be William. We had the baby named before we heard the news about the new prince so it was pure coincidence."

Dublin joker "corrects" Phil Lynott sign

First someone knocked him over - now a sign erected on the site of the Phil Lynott statue on Dublin's Harry Street has been helpfully "corrected" by a passer by.

The sign is in place to explain the absence of the eight-foot-tall cast bronze statue of the Thin Lizzy rocker after two men in their twenties knocked it over last May.

It's currently undergoing repairs and will include a base fixed into the ground to avoid further problems when it is back in its rightful place. Repairs costing €4000 are being paid for by a third party on behalf of the men who confessed to damaging the landmark sculpture.

However, as you can see from this picture on breakingnews.ie, it appears that the sign explaining what's going on has been "corrected" for Dublinese accuracy.

Kamal hangs up Celeb MasterChef apron

TV presenter and model Kamal Ibrahim became the second contestant to be eliminated from Celebrity MasterChef Ireland on RTÉ One on Sunday night.

TV presenter and model Kamal Ibrahim became the second contestant to be eliminated from Celebrity MasterChef Ireland on RTÉ One on Sunday night.

Having survived elimination in the opening episode, Ibrahim needed a good result on Sunday night's show, but his dessert was not rated by dinner party guests and his main course with a box of mystery ingredients did not impress judges Dylan McGrath and Nick Munier.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN about the Celebrity Masterchef Ireland experience, Ibrahim said: "I was very disappointed when I left [was eliminated]. I wanted to stay in badly.

"Halfway through the first episode my competiveness really started to come out. I really wanted to show Nick and Dylan, and everybody who was watching the show, that I can cook. I just wanted to impress them."

He continued: "I had practised before I went on the show in The Cornstore Restaurant Limerick, in their kitchen. In hindsight, I'm still really glad that I took part in the show. It was a great experience. My confidence in the kitchen has hugely been boosted."

When asked who he saw as competition on the show, he replied: "I think it was very evenly matched. David [Gillick] and I were both the two youngest on the show. So, I wanted to at least do as well as him. I also saw Maia [Dunphy] as competition. She was very good from the beginning; I think that she is definitely going to last until the end."

On the experience of working with judges Dylan McGrath and Nick Munier, Ibrahim said: "If there is a good-cop-bad-cop situation then Nick is the good cop and Dylan is the bad one. You can't help but respect Dylan's opinion, despite the fact that he is the hard one. They are both firm, but I got a sense that they wanted you to do well. But Dylan was definitely the point of the sword."

Sol Heras is leaving Coronation Street. The 25-year-old actor, who plays Ryan Connor, is set to film his final scenes on the cobbles which will air on ITV at the end of the summer, according to The Daily Star.

The star revealed that he will be sad to say goodbye to actress Kym Marsh, who plays his on-screen mum Michelle Connor, as they have become close on set.

He said: "Kym is one of my best friends on the show. She took me under her wing and we've become best friends.

"She's ace, we talk all the time. And with Ryan being Michelle's son there's a chance he could come back."

Heras departs the show after one year, having joined the soap in July 2012, replacing Ben Thompson as Michelle's son.

His character Ryan will reportedly realise that there is no reason to stay in Weatherfield after being dumped by girlfriend Katy Armstrong. He then receives a job offer as a DJ in Ibiza and decides to leave the Street behind.

The actor revealed that he receives a lot of off-screen abuse after his love rat character destroyed Katy's relationship with Chesney Brown (Sam Aston).

He explained: "I get a lot of people shouting at me asking why I'm so mean to Chesney.

"Guys congratulate me on having a gorgeous girlfriend but other people moan and say I should leave her alone.

"I was on a golf course recently and the lady behind the bar refused to serve me.

"She said 'You're an a*******. I can't serve you'. She said what I'd done to Chesney and Katy was awful.

"But as an actor that's the kind of reaction you want and I've been lucky to have so many different storylines."

Glee plans Cory Monteith tribute

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed the popular show will air an episode dedicated to the late Cory Monteith before the show takes a break to reassess its direction.

The third episode of season five of the show will be replaced with a tribute to the 31-year-old actor, who was found dead in a hotel room following an overdose of heroin and alcohol last weekend.

The series, which will return on September 26, one week later than planned, will then take a break while bosses reassess its direction.

Speaking to Deadline, Ryan said: "We will begin shooting in late August the two shows we had already written, so that people can physically go back to work.

"We will then do an episode that will deal with the death of Finn's character and follow that with a long hiatus. I don't know exactly when we will come back."

Murphy also explained that the cast and crew, including Monteith's girlfriend Lea Michele, made a collective decision to carry on working on the show so that they could grieve together.

He added: "We were left with the decision, what do you do? Do you cancel, shut down the show? Come back in December and January? We considered every option, and decided to do what the cast and crew felt best.

"What we did was look to the people who loved Cory, who worked with him most, and specifically Lea. This is what they wanted to do. They wanted to be back on the set, where there is a sense of security, and where they can grieve together.

"We had already written the two part Beatles tribute and we'll shoot those and Cory's tribute for that third episode and then we will take a long hiatus and figure out what to do.

"Lea blessed every decision. I told her even I don't know what to do. I don't know how to write about the death of someone I love. She wanted people to be together."

Monteith played the character of Finn Hudson in Glee, which follows a fictional high school choir.
