Star Wars update: Ford and Hamill are in London

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 April 2014 | 23.37

Original Star Wars cast members Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford are in London where shooting has just begun for the new trilogy of the sci-fi classic. Meanwhile, Carrie Fisher has confirmed her dog, Gary, is in the British capital too.

However, Disney, who bought the rights to Star Wars $4.05 billion in 2012, and director JJ Abrams have refused to confirm the involvement of the three key cast members in the new movie.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Hamill and Ford are in London and British actor Peter Serafinowicz, who voiced Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, tweeted a shot of himself with Hamill in the capital on Monday.

"Met up with @HamillHimself in London today. I wonder why he's here," he wrote.

Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movies, tweeted: "So my dog Gary has been spotted in London, but apparently without me," wrote the actor and comedian. "Who has he been seeing? Let me know if you have any clues."

Gleeson must "do weights" for next McDonagh film

Calvary and The Guard director John Michael McDonagh has said that actor Brendan Gleeson will have to go to the gym to prepare for their third film together, The Lame Shall Enter First.

The Press Association reports that McDonagh said that Gleeson will play an "abusive paraplegic" trying to solve the murder of one of his friends.

In a video interview, McDonagh revealed: "Brendan will be rattling around in a wheelchair through the streets of South London, getting into trouble.

"I'm going to have to get him to do weights. He's got no upper body strength so he'll have to get in the gym to prepare for doing all that shuffling."

McDonagh said of the London setting of the film: "The Guard was Galway, where my father's from, and Calvary is Sligo, where my mother's from, so the third one in the trilogy will be in South London, where I'm from - hopefully within a mile of my house so I can just walk home when we finish shooting."

McLynn bonds with Dot Cotton on set of EastEnders

Father Ted star Pauline McLynn said she touched Dot Cotton's face just "to make sure she was real" on her first day of filming for her new role in EastEnders.

McLynn, who will make her debut as Dot's estranged daughter-in-law Yvonne Cotton in the next few weeks, said, "June Brown is this tiny 87-year-old jewel, not a pick on her. I was sitting opposite Dot Cotton in her Eastenders home and I was thinking to myself, is she real? But I touched her and she was! It's all very exciting."

McLynn will appear on Albert Square in several storylines featuring her fictional son Charlie Cotton and the 51-year-old Sligo-born actor said her first moment on set was "strange".

Speaking to Ray D'Arcy on Today FM, she said: "This soap has anything between eight and eleven million viewers, so it'll be very strange. It's the most beautiful set I've ever been on. But it's absolutely freezing.

"I said, 'It's cold out here' and they said it's cold on Albert Square even in the summer when the sun is beating down outside."

Kylie wants to try more acting roles

Kylie Minogue has hinted that she might give acting another shot saying she truly loves it and gets a thrill out of pretending to be someone else.

Kylie got her start on Australian Neighbours but she says her big screen endeavours such as The Delinquents and Street Fighter haven't left her feeling "particularly proud".

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday newspaper, Kylie said, "I get such a thrill out of doing that as it takes me back to where I started. It is a completely different challenge. And it nice to not be Kylie for a while.

"I truly love acting. I guess I get to do some acting in song videos - even putting on a happy face when you don't feel that way."

On her former big screen outings she added, "I have had roles here and there in various films, but nothing much I am particularly proud of. Acting is where I started when I was 11 years old, and as we all know, Neighbours is the show that I became a household name in.

"Then when I did Delinquents that was such an exciting new world. I knew I was green and this was a learning ground but I did think that would be the road I would take - and it just transpired that it wasn't."

Dolores O'Riordan opens up about her darkest days

Cranberries singer and Voice of Ireland judge Dolores O'Riordan has opened up about her darkest days struggling with anorexia, saying that she got "to the point where you want to die just to get peace."

Speaking to The Sunday Independent, the 42-year-old singer's mother Eileen recalled how a music business executive called to her house in Limerick where Dolores was convalescing back in 1993.

"He told Dolores that she would lose everything and that she couldn't break her contract," Eileen said. "She came home to me and she was in the little box room. He was telling her you just have to do this tour.

"So I got so angry and I said: 'I have fed her all my life and I can feed her now! She has her own little room. That's all she wants.' I got really mad. I was going to hit him. I said to him, 'If anything happens to her, I will kill you.' I looked in his eyes. And I meant every word of it."

"They just saw me as a commodity, as a cash cow," Dolores said. "I was very, very lonely. You get to the point where you want to die because you think that you'll get peace when you're dead and you can't get any worse than you are."

Review: Tracks ***

Rising star Mia Wasikowska is superb in this bleakly beautiful true story of the Australian woman who undertook a 1,700 mile solo trek across the Australian desert. Read our review.

In lesser hands, Tracks might have been a mawkish lesson about the indomitable power of the human spirit, an against-all-odds epic with a major name connected to rev up box office torque and with the facts left trampled underfoot.

Instead, director John Curran takes a beautifully understated approach to the remarkable true story of how, aged 25, Australian woman Robyn Davidson took a 2000 mile solo trek across the Australian desert in 1977.

With only four camels and her dog, she set out on a nine-month odyssey of extremes, both physical and spiritual, that did indeed prove the indomitable power of the human spirit. However, the epiphanies are never overdone and in the lead role, Mia Wasikowska is superb, the searing heat turning her skin raw and blistered as she walks ever on, a tiny figure, dwarfed by an almost alien landscape.

One of the great strengths of Tracks is that it's not to afraid to show that the prickly and complex Davidson could very hard work indeed. She seems to revel in her existentialism and her actual reasons for the journey are left largely unexplored ("Why not?" she shrugs to her incredulous friends). We are, however, left in no doubt that she rejects the conventions of society and exercises a tetchy Garboesque hauteur under her tomboy demeanour.

Click on the video link above to watch Alan Corr's interview with Mia Wasikowska.

Along the way, Davidson deals with attacking bull camels and poison dumped by unethical industrialists, but it is the kindness of strangers that seem to present her with her greatest challenge. Interloping Outback tourists are an occasional obstacle and an overly eager National Geographic photographer (played with great presence by Adam Driver) is clearly another irritant to be tolerated as he drops in along the way.

It is certainly a beautiful looking film. Shot in a bleached-out glare, scenes are often impressionistic and dreamlike capturing the heat haze of the drifting narrative very well indeed. The vastness of the Australian wilderness has already proved an irresistible draw for the likes of Nicolas Roeg in Walkabout and for Peter Weir with his haunting masterpiece Picnic at Hanging Rock and here, the parched and stark landscape is a dangerous and seductive place.

After great turns in Only Lovers Left Alive and The Double, Wasikowska really is becoming a force to be reckoned with and her still and powerful performance here marks her out for greater things to come.

Noel Gallagher rules out Oasis Glasto re-union

Noel Gallagher says there is more chance of him and his ex-wife Meg Matthews getting back together than Oasis reforming to play Glastonbury this summer.

Andy Goldstein of talkSPORT had speculated on the chances of a reunion yesterday, tweeting: "I just text Noel asking about the chance of reforming . . . his reply "There's more chance of me and my ex-wife getting back together" So no."

Official denial also came from Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis who also ruled out an Oasis appearance at Worthy Farm. A fan had asked Eavis to "Please deny that Oasis are playing Glastonbury before tomorrow's ticket resale" to which Eavis replied, "Oasis aren't playing this year."

Liam Gallagher had sent fans into a frenzy of speculation this week with a series of cryptic tweets about his old band, which seemed to suggest they were reforming to play Glastonbury.

Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender felt "vulnerable" wearing a giant fibreglass head in his new comedy Frank.

Speaking to The Guardian, the 37-year-old 12 Years a Slave star said: "It was kind of weird in the beginning, the way it sits on your head. You feel a little bit vulnerable because you've not much peripheral vision. You can't hear that well either.

"But it's quite liberating as well, in the way that masks are. It's amazing how many emotions that face manages to convey. It can look vulnerable, it can look sinister, at times it looks confused."

Graham Norton doesn't want Strictly gig

Graham Norton has ruled himself out of taking over from Bruce Forsyth on Strictly Come Dancing.

The talk show host has claimed that he's too "lazy" to take over the job.

Norton has been touted as one of the favourites for the presenting gig after it was announced that Forsyth was quitting the BBC One show.

He told The Sun that he's already too busy hosting The Graham Norton Show on Friday evenings and his Radio 2 show on Saturday mornings, saying: "I wouldn't jump at the chance. I really enjoy the show but it's a very tough gig. I think it's very hard for a new person to take over, and I'm quite lazy.

"It would be a bit weird to also be on Saturday night and Sunday night."

The presenter suggested that the show would fare well with current co-hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman rather than trying to replace veteran presenter Forsyth.

He added: "If they just stick with Tess and Claudia then I think that's the sensible way forward. I think as a tried-and-tested duo they're great and work really well together.

"But if they did want someone new then the advantage is that it's a show that's up and running so whoever wants to present it will know whether they like it or not.

"It's much harder to go into a new format where you don't know what it's like."

Foster first spoke about her sexuality publicly at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards while collecting the Cecil B DeMille Award.

She said: "I already did my coming out about 1,000 years ago back in the Stone Age, those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers, and then gradually and proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met."

She was previously in a long-time relationship with partner Cydney Bernard, with whom she has two sons. The couple ended their 20-year relationship in 2008.

Star Wars: Episode VII likely to cost up to $200m

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 23 April 2014 | 23.38

The lead actors haven't been confirmed and we've no idea what the plot will be but each instalment of the new Star Wars' trilogy is likely to cost between $175-200m (€126-145m).

Disney chairman Alan Horn quoted the figure in an interview with Bloomberg TV. This would make the new Star Wars films, which are being directed by JJ Abrams, the most expensive in the space opera series.

"We actually don't even have the completed budget yet but it will be in that range," said Horn. "These large, tent-pole kinds of movies, on the expensive side, are in the neighbourhood of $175-200m  (£126-145m), that kind of a number - some are more, some are less."

"We need to give the audience, essentially, a full meal in return for their affection and devotion and love for these properties," he added. "We don't give budgets out. But it will be a big, tent-pole movie budget."

The last Star Wars films, prequels The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, cost around $115m each a decade ago. The original 1977 Star Wars cost just $11m, around $43m in today's money.

Kara and Hannah Tointon for Mr Selfridge

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 22 April 2014 | 23.37

Sisters Kara and Hannah Tointon have joined the cast of ITV's Mr Selfridge.

Kara, who is best known for playing Dawn Swann on Eastenders, and Hannah, who played Katy Fox in Hollyoaks and Tara Brown in The Inbetweeners, will play sisters on the period drama.

The siblings are set to depict entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfrige's (Jeremy Piven) daughters Rosalie and Violette.

A source revealed to The Sun: "Kara and Hannah are great additions and everyone is delighted they have been cast as Rosalie and Violette.

"They are both gorgeous girls and Hannah's character, Violette, has a very rebellious streak so it won't be long before she starts shaking things up."

Former Coronation Street star Sacha Parkinson has also joined the cast as shop assistant Kitty Kawkins' sister, while Zoe Wanamaker will play Russian princess Marie de Bolotoff.

The third series of Mr Selfridge starts filming in London this week and will focus on the Selfridge family in the aftermath of the First World War.

The show's executive producer Kate Lewis opened up about the fate of Harry Selfridge, saying: "We have some surprises in store for the audience in the third series.

"You only have to walk down Oxford Street today to know that Selfridge's department store continued to be successful.

"But for its founder, Harry Selfridge, things were very different. His story was a roller-coaster ride that ended rather tragically.

"We pick up series three in 1919 - the point at which his life really begins to unravel."

Ricky Wilson unsure about Voice UK return

Kaiser Chiefs frontman and The Voice UK judge Ricky Wilson is yet to receive a phone call from BBC bosses to ask him back for another series of the reality singing competition.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, the 36-year-old star said: "I haven't been asked yet, for a start. People keep telling me rumours of who might join the panel and I'm not sure there'd be a space for me. It would definitely depend on the coaches."

Commenting on Kylie Minogue's announcement that she won't be returning to the judging panel, Ricky added: "It would be weird doing it without Kylie. She helped get me over the edge.

"Kylie, Tom Jones and will.i.am were a huge part of the experience. If I do it again I will definitely miss her. I'm due to have lunch with The Voice bosses at some point."

The I Predict a Riot hitmaker also spoke about returning to the stage with the Kaiser Chiefs in February 2015, saying: "Touring for us is different - my preparation is a couple of beers, then I run on. There are less costume changes at a Kaiser Chiefs gig than a Kylie one. And a hell of a lot less feather boas!"

Ex-Corrie star attacks "prejudice" against soaps

Former Coronation Street star Sarah Lancashire has criticised "ludicrous prejudice" against soap actors by producers and agents, and says she has not ruled out a return to a soap role.

Lancashire, who played barmaid Raquel Wolstenhulme on the soap between 1987 and 1996, with a brief reappearance in 2000, told Radio Times magazine: "Soaps are a double-edged sword."

"There can be prejudice from some writers and producers who feel you will lower the currency of their work if you've been in one. You have to rise above such ludicrous prejudice," she said.

Lancashire went on to star in Lark Rise to Candleford and Last Tango in Halifax after Coronation Street and currently plays a police sergeant in new BBC One drama Happy Valley.

"Sometimes it's necessary for soaps to hang on to an audience by sensationalising, but it's a beast I don't understand any more, an art form that has fostered extraordinary talent," she said.

"It's a great arena to learn your craft before you move on. There's no such thing as a 'soap' actor, though."

Lancashire added that she would never rule out a return to soapland.

"I won't say I'd never go back to a soap because an actor's life is so precarious. You can have the most wonderful patch when everyone wants to work with you, and in the blink of an eye the phone won't ring for a month, even a year," she said.

Dornan haunted by his "golden torso" nickname

Jamie Dornan, star of TV drama The Fall and the upcoming movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, says that he may never escape his past as an underwear model.

The 31-year-old Belfast native, who is currently filming the second series of The Fall, told The Guardian that he is "haunted" by the nickname of "golden torso" he was given during his modelling years.

"That tag - underwear model - I just can't get rid of it. And it's such a bizarre, specific thing - underwear. It's like I never modelled clothes."

"I never felt I was trying to prove anything apart from to myself. But I come at it from a funny angle. Although it looks like I've only been acting a few years, we're talking hundreds and hundreds of failed auditions. I look back on it now and I don't know how anyone gets through the rejection."

With Professor John Breen from the University of Limerick as guide (pictured with the presenter), Colin learns about woodlice, centipedes, earthworms, slugs, spiders and beetles, as they battle to survive life on the forest floor. What appears to be a heap of earth and sticks at the foot of an old tree trunk is actually a vibrant nest of over 100,000 wood ants, serving queen and colony. Switching to a specialised macro lens, Colin closes in on footage of these industrious workers as they navigate their way across the forest floor using patterns of polarised light and shadows cast by neighbouring trees. While he does get bitten, he is lucky not to have formic acid squirted in his face, a favourite weapon of these aggressive little creatures.

Kathryn Thomas' Rwanda doc airs Easter Monday

Kathryn Thomas reveals that her recent visit to Rwanda, for a Radio 1 Documentary, was emotional and a great learning curve.

You may have seen the photo of Kathryn Thomas in Rwanda on the front cover of the Sunday Independent's Life magazine recently, which was taken when she was in Africa to make a documentary for RTÉ Radio 1.

The Voice of Ireland presenter told RTÉ TEN how it came about: "I had been working with Elizabeth Laragy and we had done a documentary called Music Passport, looking at music within the Travelling community.

"We really enjoyed working together, it was my first radio doc that I'd done. I've been sitting in the John Murray chair when it was vacant, whenever I was asked, or needed."

She continued: "I still feel like I'm getting my radio legs. They're nowhere near as well-walked or as well-traveled as my television legs but I still feel that I've a lot to learn. Live radio is one thing but working on a documentary it's a very different process.

"You work very closely with the producer, Elizabeth, who is absolutely brilliant and we had a great time and established a good and strong working relationship.

"What's great about it is you're out and about meeting people and for me that's what my passion is, its human interest, its listening to people's stories. That's what I'm really enjoying doing, I think that's what I'm beginning to get good at."

She added: "Elizabeth knew the 20th anniversary of the genocide was coming up and she knew that every media outlet from around the world would be doing something to commemorate it so we got chatting."

Elizabeth and Kathryn decided to focus on the music of Rwanda to tell their story: "That's what the whole documentary is about, music historically in Rwanda. I've travelled all over Africa, in the ten years of No Frontiers, Rwanda was one place I'd never been, but I understand African music and I understand how it is almost like the Irish, how its so important to us.

"It's looking at the power of music, how they used it negatively for the genocide and how today they're still using it to rebuild and to heal the country after such a horrible time."

Music Passport: A Journey through Genocide is on Easter Monday at 2pm on RTÉ Radio 1, listen live and via the RTÉ Radio Player or the Radio 1 App on your mobile.

Speaking about the effect music had during the lead up to the genocide which lasted for a 100-day period from April 7, 1994 to mid-July, Kathryn added: "Music out there was a massive part of how they instilled all this propaganda, radio was the king of communication and they used it as a weapon. They started broadcasting all this hate radio and a lot of music was specifically written to insight massacre and murder.

"Horrible times and it [the music] was a different way of coming at the whole history of it. We [producer Elizabeth and Kathryn] thought it was a good and different way into it."

Given the content of the documentary, which is  looking back at the ugliest time in Rwandan history, the experience was an emotional one, made all the more so by a personal experience for the popular presenter before she left the country.

Kathryn Thomas surrounded by skulls in a Rwandan memorial centre

Kathryn explained: "You know what and I haven't said this to anybody, I was an emotional wreck leaving because my grandmother passed away the day I flew out to Rwanda.

"That was six weeks ago now but I was so thankful that I was with her. She passed away at 11.15am and I was in the airport at 12 o'clock. It was quite difficult going over and I was quite raw anyway but I was glad I was with her. When we were there I realised, going into these genocide sites and talking to the survivors, I mean, my grandmother was a great age, she was with her family, the privilege of being with her when she passed away.

"It gave me great comfort and it actually gave me great strength when I was out there. All of a sudden, you're surrounded by death and this is not how death should be.

"This was people's lives cut short, children, toddlers [and] mothers...While I'd spent months reading and researching, nothing quite prepares you for when you're there. It was difficult but I think because a lot of what we were doing was positive, we didn't want to focus on the past, we were looking at where Rwanda is now and where they are 20 years later, at how they're created a society where people are back living together and it is a society of forgiveness.

"How you live in a village beside a man or woman who murdered your husband, your wife, your neighbour, your kids, your football friends – they've managed to create this society where people are living together and it is very much a society of forgiveness. So that's quite powerful and music is playing a huge part in that society."

In the video link-up, Suárez asked McCartney about Liverpool's cultural highlights, what he liked about Uruguay and this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The footballer also joked with McCartney about whether he would support Uruguay after they knocked England out of the competition.

McCartney replied: "England are not going to be defeated by Uruguay, I'm sorry. England are going to win the World Cup. You know that, I know that, we all know that but please dedicate a goal to me anyway."

Suárez also told McCartney that he would love to attend the concert in Montevideo and asked him if he could call Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and tell him that he would be home in time for Sunday's match against Norwich.

McCartney replied: "Coach, listen let Luis come out here. We'll show him a good time."

McCartney continued: "We are going to have a great party in Montevideo, we'll get him on a plane, he will not be tired - he will be happy but not tired - and we'll get him back in time for the game... promise."

Emma Stone doesn't mind being a role model

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Emma Stone has said she doesn't find being a role model to young people a burden, and thinks everyone should follow their own path.

The actress told Stylist: "[Being a role model] is in no way a burden at all. But that is something I have been more conscious of lately, probably because I haven't had to do interviews for a long time now."

She continued: "It's so important to be clear on your feelings about things and what you are going to say publicly, because I think that young women – and young people – are incredibly important and they need to have people in the public sphere they can look up to.

"I'm not saying I am one of them, but I do attach a big sense of importance to that. That's one of many reasons why I wish I were more eloquent."

Stone also said: "I absolutely think that people should follow their own path. And that's probably something, oddly, I have gone back to over the past couple of years and I think that's the thing I have struggled with more recently than ever."

Chris O'Dowd loves his wife's surname O'Porter

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 18 April 2014 | 23.37

Irish actor Chris O'Dowd has revealed he found it very touching that his wife, Dawn, took on the O from his surname.

The 34-year-old Boyle native married the British TV personality and author in 2012 and instead of following with tradition and taking his surname, Dawn added the O and became O'Porter.

Speaking to Esquire Magazine O'Dowd explained that he didn't believe her when she first suggested it, but was thrilled with her modern approach to the old tradition.

He said: "You know, I thought she was joking when she mentioned it at first. And then I just thought it was so cool.

"I mean she got a lot of stick for it in the UK. I think the people thought it was a silly celebrity thing or something.

"She's a feminist, so she didn't want to give her name away. But she also thought she wanted to take something of her husband's, you know, and the O is hugely meaningful. O only exists in Ireland. So you're taking on my nationality as part of your name.

"I found it very touching. I would have loved if we were both called O'Porter."

RTÉ TEN's TV Picks for Today

Music, mayhem and mirth are all on offer on Friday night.

Later... with Jools Holland
BBC Two, 11:00pm

It's amazing just how many corny wisecracks and one-liners you'll put up with when the rest of a show is this good. Series 44 (!) of Later opens with Neneh Cherry, Eagulls, Engelbert Humperdinck, Clean Bandit, Agnes Obel and old friends Elbow, who will be playing tracks from their grower of a new album, The Take Off and Landing of Everything. In the coming weeks we'll also see performances by The Black Keys, Coldplay, Joan as Policewoman, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Kelis, Paolo Nutini and St Vincent, among others. Friday night really feels like Friday night again.

The Bourne Supremacy
UTV, 10:15pm

Ah, movie comfort food - the films you watch again and again because you just don't have the mental muscles at the end of the day to put on something new. Matt Damon's second Bourne outing from 2004 is a prime example of the genre, and director Paul Greengrass' leaner, meaner take on the spy game certainly gave the Bond boffins plenty to think about. Jumping cities, this hold-your-breath gem never loses pace and provides some great set-pieces, with Moscow adding itself to the car chase honour roll that includes New York (The French Connection), San Francisco (Bullitt), Paris (Ronin) and Rome (The Italian Job). The Bourne Ultimatum is on in the same slot next Friday. Please Matt, do the world a favour and become Jason Bourne again.

The King of Comedy
Channel 4, 12:15am

"Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime." Martin Scorsese's endlessly quotable 1983 black comedy gave Robert De Niro one of his greatest (yet still overlooked by many) screen roles and presaged much of the celebrity culture we are bombarded with today. De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin, a delusional wannabe who kidnaps one of America's most celebrated talk show hosts and comics, Jerry Langford (Jerry Lee Lewis) - not for money, but for his big break in showbusiness. Rupert's accomplice is Masha (Sandra Bernhard), a stalker of Jerry's who's not prepared to let Rupert do all the talking. And it just keeps getting better. So sit back, enjoy and remember: friendship is a two-way street.

Katie Holmes - the new Nigella Lawson?

Actress Katie Holmes is reportedly being considered to replace Nigella Lawson on cooking-reality TV show, The Taste.

The former Dawson's Creek star is reportedly in the running to replace Nigella Lawson for the third series of the culinary contest after the chef was refused permission to board a flight to Los Angeles after confessing in court last year that she has taken drugs.

A source told Grazia magazine: ''Producers of 'The Taste' are looking to replace Nigella. They're keen to hear more about how Katie's planning to reinvent herself as a Martha Stewart-style culinary guru.

''It's very early days and it all depends on what happens with Nigella, but Katie is very excited and would jump at the job if it came available.''

Katie is apparently keen to reinvent herself and has apparently been in talks to make a TV show about her love of food and cooking, and sees working on 'The Taste' as a step in the right direction for her new image.

The source added: ''A meeting is planned for when she is next in LA. Katie wants a new career, loves food and is in talks about writing a cookbook. And obviously she's great on camera.''

I've been sitting in the John Murray chair when it was vacant, whenever I was asked, or needed.

"I still feel like I'm getting my radio legs.

Excitement building for The Voice Semis

Momentum has been building since The Voice of Ireland returned to our screens and Kathryn Thomas thinks that the excitement is reaching a high for this Sundays semis.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, the presenter thinks that there is huge interest in the show right now: "I think so, we felt it in the quarter final last week because it's quite cut throat, losing four people.

"We've now got six, we're going to be losing another couple on Sunday and I think at that stage people have invested in the show. It's been on for 17 weeks and I can't believe...we're going to be finished next Sunday [April 27]. It's been a great journey and we have had some fantastic singers and I think the right people are still in the competition."

Watch The Voice of Ireland semi-final on RTÉ One on Easter Sunday, April 20, at 6:30pm.

Last week on the show, 2fm's Ruth Scott spoke up for one semi-finalist in particular: "Brendan is our 2fm wild-card, he is the remaining wild-card from all 5 contestants. And you know what? We wish them all luck, but really Brendan, we're rooting for you because we picked you.

"The boss sat us [the four 2fm wild-card judges] down before we went in to listen to the wild-cards and said now lads, you better pick someone that makes it through to the end. We laughed nervously then, and we still laugh nervously now!"

She added: "The very best of luck to you Brendan McCahey. If you're watching the voice next Sunday night  - he's the man with the glasses, he's our 2fm wildcard."

Kathryn added: "He's doing absolutely brilliantly. I've to be very diplomatic in not showing any bias. He's got such a fan base and you can't say anything bad about Brendan.

"I wish some story came out about him like he was horrendously mean and threw a big Diva strop back stage but he's such a sweet person but he's got big competition.

"Jamie [Stanton] is amazing as well, he's got the Cork contingent behind him. Laura May [Lenehan] is going to come out fighting for the ladies along with Kellie [Lewis] and then you've got Jay [Boland] and Paddy Molloy, they're like the gorgeous little boy band, so they've got plenty of support as well. So it'll be a fight to the finish."

Rave reviews for O'Dowd's Broadway debut

Irish actor Chris O'Dowd has received rave reviews for his performance as Lennie in the new Broadway version of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.

O'Dowd stars opposite James Franco as George in the tale of two drifters in Depression-era California in a cast which also boasts Irish Tony winner Jim Norton (The Seafarer).

The Hollywood Reporters says O'Dowd is "tremendous in a part that could easily stray into mawkish territory" adding "it's a lovely performance – sweet, funny and ultimately heartbreaking."

While Entertainment Weekly said "The real surprise in Anna D. Shapiro's finely staged production is Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids) as George's mentally challenged travel companion, Lenny.

"The gifted comedic actor brings a studied and skillful physicality to Lenny" adding "O'Dowd's riveting performance is a study in underdeveloped impulse control."

Meanwhile Variety commented "O'Dowd has mastered a small but refined repertoire of facial expressions and gestures (one hand movement has the delicacy of an artist) that is quite astonishing.Going beyond that physical expressiveness, the depth and understanding he brings to the role render Lennie, quite simply, heartbreaking."

Of Norton the Hollywood Reporter said "the most invaluable support comes from Jim Norton's shattering Candy, the doddery farmhand disabled in an accident, who all too clearly sees his own future going the way of his toothless old mutt, Watching Candy's face dissolve from grief into radiant hope as he buys into George and Lennie's dream scheme is among the play's most affecting moments."

According to the Daily Mirror, former X Factor contestant Rylan Clark, will co-host with Whitmore.

A source told the publication: "It's a pretty stressful time, because Laura and Rylan have been screen tested but obviously, that makes it look like Caroline and Matt could be for the chop.

"The final decision isn't made until the last minute – Olly Murs only found out he had the job just days before he started filming. So it's quite tense, as it's a big deal."

Review: We Are The Best ***

Punk's not dead! Three teenage girls in 1980s' Stockholm decide to form a band in this gentle and very funny comedy. Read our review.

Set in Stockholm in 1982, Mags Moodyson's delightful coming-of -age movie sees introverted, androgynous and socially-conscious Bobo and her garrulous friend Klara form a punk band.

It's their defiant outsider retort to life at school where they are misfits - teased by the flaxen haired girls - still mourning the break-up of ABBA - and ridiculed by surly Heavy Metal boys. At home, the pair are treated with a loving bemusement by their respective parents.

These two wannabe outsider punks have the look and the attitude for sure but they just don't have the songs or the ability to play until they manage to recruit devout Christian and gifted guitarist Hedvig to their cause. Bonded by friendship and the urge to make a difference or at least some noise, their confidence and attitude grows. "God is a fascist" and the nascent politically-charged punk trio rhyme "morgue" with "Bjorn Borg". Sport, meanwhile, is just another way of kowtowing to "The Man".

We Are The Best shoots us right back to an era when music was a tribal stance and the right haircut was everything. In a sign of just how hardcore they are, Klara's older brother, Linus, is deemed a "sell out" because he only listens to Joy Division.

Moodysson's film, which he co-wrote with his wife, Coco, from her graphic novel, is a small affair, full of quirky observations on teen trauma but also long on laughs and memorable characters. It captures the major mortifications and minor triumphs of the teenage years brilliantly and there are beautifully naturalistic performances from the two hugely likeable leads (both making their debuts) as they tremble on the terrifying and tantalising brink of teen hood.

Will there be a sequel in five years time?

AC/DC: We are not retiring

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 16 April 2014 | 23.37

AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson says the band are not splitting up following concerns for the health of guitarist Malcolm Young and that they are still planning to write for a new album.

"We are definitely getting together in May in Vancouver," he told the Daily Telegraph. "We're going to pick up some guitars, have a plonk, and see if anybody has got any tunes or ideas. If anything happens, we'll record it."

Johnson also confirmed that one member of the band has been suffering from ill health, but denied that this meant the end of the road for the band.

"I wouldn't like to say anything either way about the future," he said. "I'm not ruling anything out. One of the boys has a debilitating illness, but I don't want to say too much about it. He is very proud and private, a wonderful chap. We've been pals for 35 years and I look up to him very much."

The band have also released a statement confirming that guitarist Young (61) is to take time out of the band "due to ill health":

The statement reads: "After forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health. Malcolm would like to thank the group's diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.

"In light of this news, AC/DC asks that Malcolm and his family's privacy be respected during this time. The band will continue to make music."

Watch! X-Men: Days of Future Past new trailer

The final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past has been released and sees Wolverine go back in time to speak to a young Professor Xavier. Check it out here.

Days of Future Past combines some old and new faces from the X-Men universe with Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry returning as Wolverine and Storm, and Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters also starring.

Director Bryan Singer told Hero Complex about his inspiration for bringing the past and future together for the film, "There's a theory about things: until they're observed, they haven't really quite happened yet, it's called a superposition in quantum mechanics.

Michael Fassbender as Magneto.

"If you put a poison that may or may not release inside a box with a cat, until you observe the result, the cat is both alive and dead at the same time. The outcome hasn't happened yet, so you can muck about in the past, but until you return to observe the future, it doesn't take hold. That's called collapsing the superposition. I applied this notion to our story line, and it really helped me create a narrative where both the past and future can co-exist at the same time."

Peter Dinklage joins the cast at Boliver Trask.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for release on May 22.
