Rose Byrne returns in X-Men: Apocalypse

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 31 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Rose Byrne will reprise her role as Moira MacTaggert in X-Men: Apocalypse.

According to Entertainment Weekly, she will join Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm, who will also be reintroduced into the hugely successful Marvel Comics' franchise.

Apocalypse writer Simon Kinberg said she will have a significant role in the film. "We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them," he explained.

Kinberg also teased a possible Professor X plot, saying: "It's certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class and would like to mine more in this one."

Although details about the film are being kept under wraps, Kinberg acknowledged that the film will mark the end of an arc for the main characters in the franchise.

"This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters," he said.

"They're such young actors and young characters, so there's a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie."

X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to be released in May 2016.

Kilmer was last spotted in public with his son Jack on January 16 at a Los Angeles Clippers' basketball game.

Tom Petty comments on Sam Smith royalties

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Tom Petty has released a statement commenting on the story this week that he had received royalties from Sam Smith.

It was revealed that Petty and ELO's Jeff Lynne had received royalties from Sam Smith due to the similarities between his breaktrough hit Stay with Me and Tom Petty's 1989 track I Won't Back Down.

The Sun reported that the matter was settled out of court in October 2014.

Petty has now commented on the story, posting a statement on his website which read: "About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by.

"Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself.

"Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."

Watch! Colin Firth on new movie Kingsman

Kingsman: The Secret Service, hits theatres today, RTÉ TEN caught up with Colin Firth to find out what the movie is all about. Check out the interview below.

Speaking about the intense training in preparation for his role as a kick-ass spy, Firth said: "It's certainly more gruelling than it looks. Somebody very kindly said that it looks effortless which I can assure you, it really was not. It was a great amount of fun once it was up and running, but it took a lot of work.

"I've exercised to the minimum over the last ten years or so but nothing like this. To begin with, it was just squatting and lunging and trying to turn left and right in ways that I wasn't used to.

"I had this extraordinary team of guys training me. At first it was intimidating because I'm so far from their skills. I thought I was going to be judged harshly. But because we were all working for the same thing, I started to get points for effort and for showing up."

He added: "They didn't know what to expect from me because they've worked with actors who are fiercely committed and very skilled; but they've also worked with actors who don't want to do it. At least I wanted to and I was punctual and willing.

"[The training] It was about six months. We had these three hour sessions which I would go to with a heavy heart but I'd always come away feeling a bit exhilarated."

"What sort of message does that send to working class rock and roll bands, which the industry is in dire need of? Kasabian couldn't have done any more last year. It's bull**** really. It's way more exciting playing the BAFTAs than the Brits."

Kasabian will take to the stage at the BAFTAs this year and Pizzorno teased the performance saying, "We're going to start the night off with a huge explosion. We're going to play everything twice as loud. Half the people there won't have a clue what is going on."

The Edge's first guitar is up for auction

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 27 Januari 2015 | 23.37

The first guitar owned by The Edge of U2 will go under the hammer at a Dublin auction house and is expected to fetch up to €1,800.

The "learner's classical guitar", which has been described as "a modest little instrument" was bought by the late Gwenda Evans in the 1970s for her son, David.

But, according to Dublin auction house Whyte's auctioneers, The Edge left the guitar behind at his mother's house.

Speaking to The Irish Times, Stuart Purcell of Whyte's said: "Around 1980, when a teaching colleague of Gwenda's in Scoil Íosa, Malahide, mentioned that she needed a guitar, as she was beginning lessons, Gwenda offered to sell her The Edge's old one for the price she had bought it for".

The unnamed woman is said to have paid about £20 for the instrument but later abandoned the lessons but kept the guitar. Years later, she met The Edge who signed the guitar.

She has now decided to sell the guitar and it will be part of Whyte's sale of Rock, Pop & Movie Memorabilia in Dublin on March 15 and has been given an estimate of between €1,200 and €1,800.

RTÉ TEN's top TV picks for Tuesday, January 27

Marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the most terrible of the Nazi concentration camps, Touched by Auschwitz is on BBC Two; Ear to The Ground asks why rural Ireland sill doesn't have broadband; more careworn medical drama on Grey's Anatomy on RTÉ2 - here's our top three picks for today's telly.

Touched by Auschwitz, BBC Two, 9.00pm

This one hour and half feature length documentary explores the experiences of six Auschwitz survivors who tell of their survival in the years after liberation and right up to the present day. Producer and Director Laurence Rees who made the excellent The Nazis: A Warning From History and Auschwitz: The Nazis and The Final Solution travelled extensively in order to film six survivors, along with their friends and families. Together these sequences filmed in Jerusalem and Chicago, London and Bavaria, Krakow and Tel Aviv build a compelling portrait of the problems, challenges and triumphs that six different individuals have experienced since the war, as a result of their time in Auschwitz.

Ear to The Ground, RTÉ One, 8.30pm

Tonight's edition of the rural affairs show is called Getting Connected and it investigates why much of Ireland is still in the dark ages when it comes to decent broadband. For presenter Helen Carroll it's personal - when she and her partner built their house in Kilkenny 13 years ago, she was told she would have broadband within 3 years. She is still waiting. Frustrated with the set up, Helen embarked on a journey to find out if she would ever have broadband.  Along the way she met many others also trying to run businesses in rural Ireland, before  heading to the offices of Minister for Communications Alex White to see what he had to say.

Grey's Anatomy, RTÉ2, 9.00

In this Maggie-centric episode, she continues to try to make a positive impression at the hospital but finds herself in extremely unfortunate situations. Meanwhile, Richard continues to hold onto his secret and the doctors work with a dying woman who is being kept alive by her daughter.

On the Box - TV Review

A Batman prequel, the final finale of Futurma, some sentimental Sunday viewing and a documentary about a gigantic night club - it's been another week of jumbled telly-watching for John Byrne.

Reviewed: Gotham (Monday, RTÉ2); Futurama (Sunday, Sky 1); Call the Midwife (Sunday, BBC One); Clubland: Reality Bites (Wednesday, RTÉ2)

What's your problem with winter? Dark evenings, cold, wind, rain and a lack of funds combine with the delightful result that you're watching loads of telly. I'd call that a result.

Now that we're at the quitting end of January and things are pretty much back to dysfunctional normality, the new and returning shows are nicely clogging up the schedules and filing in those long nights.

Besides it's so much easier to complete New Year resolutions when all they require is a sofa and a functioning remote control, and seeing Gotham (Monday, RTÉ2) was high on my 'to do' list for 2015. Set yourself achievable goals, that's what I say.

As a lifelong Batman fan and an admirer of Bruno Heller, the British TV exec responsible for shows as diverse as Rome and The Mentalist and now the main mover behind Gotham, I was expecting great things. And while the pilot merely set the show up for the weeks ahead, it also laid out an excellent template for the opening season.

Unless you've been living in a bat cave for the last 80 years, chances are you know the basic back story. So I'll skip over that and just acknowledge that this prequel is set in the years when Bruce Wayne was a boy, dealing with his parents' double murder. It was a dark delight, even though it played free and easy with the comic book's roots.

What we got here was a noir-ish Gotham City, a town bursting with crooks and corrupt cops. But rookie detective Jim Gordon is determined to bring the bad guys down, and for all the right reasons. I wouldn't say I'm hooked (though I am), but it was an impressive start that also introduced a couple of early incarnations of future Batman super villains. Check it out on the RTÉ Player if you missed it on Monday. If they get this right it could run for decades.

And while it was great to see a new arrival (and more about the newborn later), this was also a week for goodbyes as Futurama (Sunday, Sky 1) finally took off for TV Heaven after several revivals. In truth, it really shouldn't have returned for a tenth season, as the stories and jokes were often flat, although it's still funnier than The Simpsons, a show that hasn't just passed its sell-by date, it's lapped it several times over.

It was a bit of a mushy, sentimental end for Fry and the gang as the pizza-delivering time traveller popped the question to Leela. Thanks to Fry damaging a device invented by Professor Farnsworth that pushes time back ten seconds, the couple end up in a world where everybody is frozen in time, except for them. Which, of course, gives them the freedom of the planet.

In the end, Farnsworth reappeared and fixed the device, offering the ageing couple a chance to 'do it all again'. Even though it meant that they'd have all memory of their lives together wiped, they go for it. I doubt if Bender would have approved.

For decades, British TV giants the BBC and ITV have battled it out on Sunday nights with period dramas ranging from Bronte adaptations and their early nineteenth century settings to more recent chapters in history. It's always been competitive and some of TV's most popular shows – Inspector Morse, Pride and Prejudice, etc – have sent millions of beaming Britons to bed on Sunday nights.

In more recent years, the Edwardian era has produced a couple of hits in the shape of Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge. The latter returned last Sunday and we'll be taking stock of its third season in a week or two, but this time around I'm heading to the late 1950s/early 1960s, and an area in the East End of London called Poplar.

Nowadays a stop on the rail line from London City Airport to the West End, and home to a selection of skyscrapers as well as the odd, hopelessly dwarfed residential street, back in the 1950s Poplar was a working-class area that simply teemed with life.

Call the Midwife (Sunday, BBC One) is an unapologetically nostalgic, feel-good drama, set in Poplar, and despite losing the odd key cast member (I'm still in mourning over Jessica Raine), it remains on top of its game and has a unique rhythm all its own.

Whether a time when vast swathes of the (in this case, British) population were clearly undernourished and either in or on the brink of poverty could be considered the 'good old days' isn't an argument I ever bothered with - all I want is a well-worked TV show that entertains, and Call the Midwife never fails.

This time around the focus was on a Caribbean couple expecting their first child, as well as Jenny Agutter's Sister Julienne meeting up with an old flame just before his light went out, and despite several mishaps, everyone was left smiling in the end.

It's good for the soul to have a show like this on the telly. It's a welcome alternative to the grittier dramas we normally devour, and a bit like Sunday tea with your granny before getting ready for school the next day. And we all love Gran, right?

The Guardian recently did a hatchet job on this show, and such mean-spiritedness only underlines the value of Call the Midwife. On Sunday nights, before starting another week, there's a certain comfort in watching babies been born and pallid people smiling through snaggled teeth and making light of malnutrition. It is, quite literally, a case of 'Knees Up, Muvver Brown'.

Even more entertaining, and a complete contrast, was Clubland: Reality Bites (Wednesday, RTÉ2). This returning documentary strand took as its first topic the massive Wright Venue in the county Dublin area of Swords, and apparently it's the largest nightclub in the country.

Seen through the eyes of the various folk who run and promote the venue, this was a master class in modern living as a bunch of  extra-large Oompa-Loompas ran around, not doing an awful lot while Acting Important, but everything seems to work out in the end. Mission: Superfluous.

Chief culprit was Steven, a club employee whose sole purposes in life seems to bounce around between hanging out, throwing mini hissy fits and gasping for a smoke. I haven't laughed so much since I got my first water bill notice, and this lot are much more worthy of your time (and a TV series) than the TOWIE crew or those extremely annoying Kardashians, all of whom would be welcomed with open, fake-tanned arms and air kisses at The Wright Venue.

The lines between reality stuff and the other stuff have well and truly blurred.

John Byrne

Tom Petty and the ELO's Jeff Lynne have been awarded Sam Smith royalties.

The pair – who worked together in The Travelling Wilburys - each received a 12.5% writing credit for Smith's breakthrough hit Stay With Me, due to the song's melodic similarities to Tom Petty's 1989 hit I Won't Back Down.

Cumberbatch's parents didn't want him to act

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Januari 2015 | 23.38

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that his parents didn't want him to follow them into an acting career.

The star's parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham are both esteemed actors, but they wanted their son to follow a more conventional career path.

He explained to The Mirror: "[Acting is] a very odd, peripatetic, crazed, out of your control work and social schedule."

"It's very hard to plan a family life, yet alone know where the next pay cheque is coming from so they worked very, very hard as my parents, and actors, to afford me an education whereby I had the opportunity and the privilege to try and channel myself towards other goals.

"For a while, I wanted to be a barrister because there's definitely a crossover with criminal law - with trying to persuade an audience and a jury and a judge of the case and your client's story so I did go down that root for a little bit. I think they would have been very happy if I ended up there."

However, Cumberbath added that his father was quick to compliment him when he saw him perform.

The Sherlock star said:  "Much to dad's amazing selflessness as a man, and I hope to echo that when my time comes to be a dad, he said to me in a car park after a play I'd done at Manchester University, when I was a student there, he said, 'You're better now than I was or ever will be,' which is a huge thing for a man to say to his son."

Rihanna wins legal battle against Topshop

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 23 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Rihanna has won a UK court battle against Topshop over the selling of T-shirts displaying her picture without her permission.

The battle between the pop star and the retail giant began in 2012 when Topshop started to sell the t-shirts for £22.

The image of Rihanna was captured during a video shoot for her Talk That Talk album by an independent photographer who then licensed the image to Topshop.

The Court of Appeal in London upheld a ban on the high street chain selling the sleeveless shirt featuring a photo of the singer.

Three appeal judges agreed that selling the item without Rihanna's involvement was an act of "passing off", referring to the unauthorised use of a personal image.

Rihanna, one of the world's most successful artists, is thought to be worth over $120 million.

Movie review round-up!

It's a bumper week for movies, but before you buy that popcorn check out what cinema releases are worth your hard earned cash.

The Gambler
3.5/5
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael K Williams, Jessica Lange, Anthony Kelley, Alvin Ing
12A

Seventeen years after the Matt Damon-starring gambling drama Rounders opened in cinemas, some of us still can't see John Malkovich on a TV without saying 'Pyay him. Pyay dat man hees mahney' like his character, poker player Teddy KGB. Rounders is one of those movies that you'll happily watch again if it pops up while scouring the channels late at night. The Gambler is destined to be another.

The game here is blackjack, and the guy in way over his head is Jim Bennett (Wahlberg), a literature professor whose all-or-nothing approach to life results in him owing $200,000 to a Korean gambling ring boss (Ing) and $60,000 to a loan shark (The Wire star Williams). He has seven days to pay them both but doesn't seem too bothered about the consequences. Not yet, anyway. Ah yes, that other fine line - the one between cool and stupid.

Sure, it's easy to scratch the head and wonder whether Wahlberg has been miscast as a self-loathing academic, but Ted's straight man does some of his best work here as Bennett, owning the character and...

Ex Machina
4/5
Starring: Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander
15 A

Alex Garland's directorial debut, Ex Machina is a taut, tense and elegant sci-fi thriller that is utterly compelling from start to finish.

Garland, best known for the screenplay for 28 Days Later and his book The Beach, takes the reins for this smart and stylish movie that explores the dangers of increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence for the human race, as well as the moral issues of man creating thinking beings.

Set in the not-too-distant future, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is a hotshot young coder working for Bluebook, the world's largest internet search engine. He wins an internal lottery in the company to spend a week with Bluebook's reclusive and mysterious CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). After being flown by helicopter...

Ex-Corrie star: 'Anne Kirkbride was a one-off'

Former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh has said that the late Anne Kirkbride was "an absolute one-off" and "totally irreplaceable".

The actress, who played Hayley Cropper on the soap, starred alongside Kirkbride for 16 years.

Kirkbride passed away in hospital on Monday evening following a short illness aged 60.

Hesmondhalgh spoke about her sadness at the news of Kirkbride's passing during an appearance on ITV's Lorraine today (January 21).

She said: "It was a real shock. I think it's just sinking in for people now by the look of it. I was so glad that everyone got sent home yesterday.

"Coronation Street is such an amazing cast and crew, and actually at times like this they're at their absolute best - they all stick together and look after each other so completely. I can only imagine what the feeling is there. It's such a huge loss.

"The crew will be devastated. They got more hugs off Annie than anyone else! The famous Annie hugs lasted a long time - we often had to hold up filming for them while she went round the entire camera crew!

"She was always so welcoming. When new cast members and crew members came in, she'd always ask them what their star sign was as soon as they came in. Then she'd always say, 'We'll get on very well!' Her star sign seemed to get along with all the other ones in the zodiac!

"I know the writers loved writing for her. There's nothing that she wouldn't do. She was a complete professional. I don't think I ever heard her lose a line. She was always right on time, doing it absolutely brilliantly - but off screen an absolute one-off, totally irreplaceable."

"It's always more daunting to write and perform songs that are autobiographical," he said. "I tend to write more when I'm feeling down or when something bad happens as it can be the only way to express myself. I'm really looking forward to sharing the new songs with the fans.

"I've always had so many influences and things to say that wouldn't have been quite right for Westlife and it's been fun after all these years to finally let them all out."

Tickets for Markus Feehily live at The Olympia Theatre are priced from €27.90 incl. booking fee and go on sale this Friday, January 23 at 9.00am from www.ticketmaster.ie.

Mark Schultz apologies for Foxcatcher Twitter rant

Written By Unknown on Senin, 19 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Former Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, whose story serves as the inspiration behind Oscar-nominated drama Foxcatcher, has apologised for slamming the movie and its director, Bennett Miller.

Schultz, who is played by Channing Tatum in the flick, took to Twitter to offer an apology for his criticism, saying that he feels "terrible," while insisting he was "temporarily insane" when he criticised Foxcatcher.

He wrote, "I feel terrible about what I did to Bennett. I should have followed God, not man. Foxcatcher is going to help wrestling. There's so many positives and no negatives. When I fought and Dave wasn't there was so emotional. Everyone who saw #Foxcatcher loves it!

"Foxcatcher is a miracle. I'm sorry I said I hated it. I love it. I love my interpretation and will ignore the haters. I'm never getting mad," he added. "I think the problem I had was the context of the movie. It's what happened was so hard. My brother's murder. My career ruined."

"I apologize to you before the world Bennett. I'm sorry. I was temporarily insane," Schultz continued.

He also mentioned the recent Oscar nominee announcement, writing, "Channing Tatum GOT ROBBED. HE WAS SO GOOD IT WAS UNREAL. I'm amazed he wasn't nominated. Bennett Miller is the greatest director ever. 3rd time's the charm. He's due an oscar."

Isaac and classmate Chastain make "dream movie"

With A Most Violent Year opening in cinemas on Friday, star Oscar Isaac has told RTÉ TEN that he and co-star Jessica Chastain told each other when they were starting out as classmates at the Juilliard School that they would one day make a film together.

Set in New York in 1981, A Most Violent Year tells the story of Abel Morales (Isaac), a businessman who together with his wife Anna (Chastain) faces a crucial three days in his professional life.

Both actors deliver some of their best screen work to date in the film as the couple, with their scenes together all the more powerful because they have known each other for so many years.

Isaac said of their chemistry: "Jessica and I would get together and basically just go through every inch of the script, dissecting it to get a sense of their history, because so much is implied or not really said at all.... And we were able to build a shared history together.

"The fact that we do have a shorthand, that we've known each other for so long, allowed us to be very honest with each other."

He continued: "Often, when you work with another actor you don't know what their process might be so you have to be respectful of it.

"But with Jessica... We already had a lot of respect for each other so we were able to just be very blunt and say whatever we wanted, no matter how wrong we might be!"

Of their longtime friendship, Isaac said: "We always were such fans of each other's work and have supported each other from the get-go.

"Jessica came to the first few premieres of the very first few movies I did out of school. I did the same for her. We've always kept in touch with each other."

He added: "It's funny, because you never know how it's [acting] going to go. The fact that we'd wanted to do something together and finally we were at the place in both of our careers where we could do basically the dream movie, which is this Seventies-style, 'Golden Era of Film' relationship drama... I just keep not being able to believe my luck!"

Watch out for a full interview with Isaac on RTÉ TEN this Wednesday, January 21.

Coming Out of The Curve, RTÉ One, 9.35pm

Donal Óg Cusack, three-times All-Ireland winning Cork hurler and one of Ireland's first high-profile sports personalities to come out, asks how much life in Ireland and internationally has changed for gay people in the two decades since the de-criminalisation of homosexuality. Donal takes stock of gay rights, both at home and abroad, and asks how far we have travelled from the days when being gay was effectively against the law in Ireland. He talks to sports people about coming out, and interviews an 'ex-gay' man who claims he has been `cured' of his homosexuality.

Rob Delaney (comedian and bestselling author) and Sharon Horgan of Pulling fame and comedian and author Rob Delaney star in and co-wrote this new comedy series for Channel 4. They play an American man and Irish woman who embark on a week-long affair in London which ends when he returns to the US. But then he's forced to return to Britain when he learns that she's pregnant.

Claire Byrne Live, RTÉ One. 10.35pm

Presenter Claire Byrne will be joined by guests and a live studio audience for discussion, analysis and whatever has the country talking in this new hour-long current affairs show. Tonight, the show opens with a bit of a scoop - actor Colin Farrell is interviewed as the issue of same-sex marriage is debated and the actor discusses his own family experience and views.

Farrell's brother Eamon married his partner Steven Mannion in Canada and the actor says of the couple: "To see them every day live their lives as a happily married couple is an amazing thing, and to think that they had to leave their own country to do that is sad and disappointing and just grossly unfair, I feel."

Responding to people's concerns about same-sex couples becoming parents, Farrell says: "It's too easy for heterosexuals to be parents, if you want the truth. It's too easy. There are too many of us who find it too easy to have a kid...

"Too many parents around the world don't parent their kids, because it was a five-minute thing... and there it is."

He continues: "We're talking about Irish society, being the best version in any referendum, divorce, same-sex marriage, being the best version of ourselves that we can be."

On the upcoming referendum, Farrell says: "I carry Ireland with me everywhere I go, and I love my country deeply . . . This is my 'coming out of the closet', as it were, publicly and saying that I support this vote with every fibre of my being."

James Franco and Lana Del Rey plan film project

James Franco has revealed he wants to make a movie with Lana Del Rey because she has an ''awesome'' idea for a project.

The 36-year-old star of The Interview has penned an essay about his love for 29-year-old Del Ray, which revealed that the pair discussed collaborating on a film project.

In a piece for V magazine, Franco wrote: ''She has this idea for a film. I want to do it because it's a little like Sunset Boulevard. A woman is alone in a big house in L.A. She doesn't want to go out. She starts to go crazy, and becomes paranoid because she feels like people are watching her.

"Even in her own house. It's like an awesome B-movie that lives in Lana's head. It's about her, and it's not about her. Just like her music.''

Franco added,"[She] isn't made for this Earth. I wanted to interview Lana for a book and she said, 'Just write around me, it's better if it's not my own words. It's almost better if you don't get me exactly, but try.'"

Director George Lucas is not a fan of the Oscars

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 17 Januari 2015 | 23.37

Director George Lucas has hit out at the Academy Awards calling the event a "political campaign" which does not recognise real artistic talent.

Lucas made his comments after Selma star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay did not receive any Oscar nominations.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic was shortlisted in the coveted Best Picture and Best Original Song categories but surprisingly failed to receive nominations for Oyelowo for his portrayal of the civil rights icon or his director DuVernay.

Academy officials were heavily criticised for the lack of diversity in their top picks for the acting awards, but Lucas insists the snub came as no surprise to him.

Speaking on US news show CBS This Morning Lucas said: "There's always controversy. That's why I'm not a member.

"Everybody has their personal opinions about what they think (the nominations) should be. I think David, who was in (Lucas' 2012 film) Red Tails, is truly one of the great actors of all time. And you know, the director, Ava, is amazing. I think they're very, very talented people. But what can I say?

"The thing about the Academy, it's a political campaign, it has nothing to do with artistic endeavour at all. So it's a political campaign. It's like - why do we have a tendency to elect people who drift toward not the most talented, best and brightest we have in the country? It's all political."

He added: "I think Ava and David deserved to be (nominated) - (but) you know, they're starting their careers, and this is an important moment for them. And I think it's a beautiful film, it's a wonderful film."

Blunt was terrified to sing in front of Streep

Emily Blunt has admitted that singing in front of her Into The Woods cast mates was like showing them her underwear.

The 31-year-old actress has revealed she was absolutely terrified at the thought of performing in front of co-stars Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and James Corden, but says all the cast shared her fears of doing something so ''intimate''.

Speaking to Stylist magazine Blunt said: ''My knees were knocking walking into the auditions. It's a very intimate and personal thing to sing for somebody, especially a musical god like Rob Marshall.

''It's why people have to be drunk to do karaoke.

''On the first day of rehearsals there was a hideous moment when Rob said, 'OK, we're going to sing now' and everybody just screamed. Because here it was, the moment where everybody had to suddenly show their underwear.''

Despite her nerves, Emily enjoys singing karaoke and revealed what songs she likes to sing: "'I love Janis Joplin. Sometimes if I'm coerced I'll do Aerosmith's I Don't Want To Miss A Thing. And I love Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding, but that's usually later on in the night.''
