Damian Lewis on Brody drug scenes

Damian Lewis has spoken about the preparation he undertook for season three of Homeland.

The series sees his character Nicholas Brody deal with drug addiction while being held captive.

Lewis told Entertainment Weekly about the research he did into addiction before filming the series.

He explained: "I saw this extraordinary video on YouTube where a guy charts his withdrawal at different intervals... as he goes cold turkey.

"But I found it more interesting to speak to a friend of mine who's an ex-heroin addict who deals with people with addiction, and he put me in touch with ex-addicts - or, I suppose, addicts - who are now working with people.

"I had a fascinating hour with a guy working in a Charlotte, North Carolina addiction unit at a hospital there.

"Fairly conventional modes of research, talking to people, getting anecdotal evidence, watching video and trying to reproduce that.

"[It was] fascinating, interesting and exhausting."

Lewis added: "I feel added responsibility when portraying real-life conditions because there're people out there living with these conditions and you owe it to them to represent it honestly.

"There's the added burden of trying to get it right and not letting a community of people down who suffer from this addiction. You want to represent them faithfully."

The next episode of season three of Homeland airs on RTÉ Two at 9pm on Tuesday December 3.

Bullock not looking for a relationship

Sandra Bullock has said that she's not looking for a new relationship.

Bullock was married to Jesse James for five years, and adopted son Louis in 2010. The couple broke up shortly afterwards following allegations that James had been unfaithful.

The Gravity star told Entertainment Weekly that she is happy to raise her son as a single mother.

The actress said: "If [a relationship] should come along, great. But I feel like I'm not missing anything yet. Maybe one day I will.

"My son is three years old, which is an amazing age. Four is an even better age. So if something happens, great, but if not, I've got plenty to do."

Bullock also opened up on how she views her life, saying that the painful moments help her appreciate positive events.

She explained: "When people are like, 'Life is good,' I go, 'No, life is a series of disastrous moments, painful moments, unexpected moments, and things that will break your heart. And in between those moments, that's when you savor, savor, savor.'"

Odenkirk opens up on Breaking Bad spinoff

Bob Odenkirk has opened up on the Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul.

The series, which is based around Walter White's lawyer Saul Goodman, will be written by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, AMC announced last September.

Odenkirk told Access Hollywood of his new show: "I've got the best writers in Hollywood. Maybe it's prequel? Maybe it's sequel? Maybe it's both? They're talking about mixing it up."

He added: "You may see a little of before [Breaking Bad], and a little of after. We'll see… I do feel pressure. I feel a lot of pressure to do a good job.

"I don't think you can keep Breaking Bad going. It ended. And it was great. And it was what it was. This is going to be something new. But since it's so much of the same team, it's going to be a quality piece of work.

"I just want to bring all I can bring to it, and be completely focused."

Odendirk said of working on Breaking Bad: "We had a lot of fun. We had wonderful people too. Bryan Cranston set the tone [by saying], 'We're here to work'."

He continued: "Aaron Paul is a very sweet person. [The cast are] funny people too… It was just a great group who were thankful to be in a great show."

Better Call Saul is scheduled to debut on AMC in the US next year.

There is unrest amongst the New Democrats in the first episode of the double bill tonight when the sex trade is placed on the agenda. In Copenhagen, police have found three women who have been locked up and forced to have sex against their will. The case causes the political parties to discuss the need for a law prohibiting the purchase of sex in Denmark. During the negotiations on the bill, however, Birgitte requests time for reflection when she becomes in doubt about what prostitutes themselves actually want or need. The New Democrats finally have enough signatures to run for Parliament, but need more candidates. Birgitte suggests economics professor Søren Ravn, but not all of the candidates in the party share her enthusiasm about him as he is very left-wing, and had previously been a member of the Communist Party. The press dig up his past and put him under intense personal pressure. Meanwhile, Birgitte receives bad news from the doctor, which she tries to conceal from those around here. In Danish with English subtitles.

Lumley thinks Ab Fab film will happen

Joanna Lumley has opened up about a possible Absolutely Fabulous film, saying that she thinks it will go ahead.

When appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, she was asked if writer and co-star Jennifer Saunders had an idea for a big-screen adaptation.

Lumley said: "Yes. She has the idea. I think with a little bit of, not too painful, pressure, a little bit of vice-like grip and a Chinese burn on the arm, up behind her back, she always needs a little bit of urging.

"I think it'll happen. Jennifer tends to work to deadlines, so we've got to create a deadline and then get her there."

However, the actress was less forthcoming on plot teasers, when asked to share some she said: "No, I can't. I can't, it would be so wrong. And then she'd go back into this camel state she sometimes lives in.

"I don't mean literally, what I mean is she goes into this sphinx area where she just won't speak again. So I won't tell you anything about it. But I think it's always time to goad her along by saying, 'Yes, we will do it. Yes, it's going to be written, and it's going to be fabulous'".

First Look: PS4

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 29 November 2013 | 23.37

Following last week's Xbox One launch, Sony hit back with the PS4. John Walshe puts it through its paces.

First impression? It's like Knight Rider is living in my house. Sleek and sexy, the new PS4 unit looks the business. Much smaller than its predecessor, the unit looks sophisticated and ultra-modern, with diagonal edges and futuristic strip lighting.

The next thing the PS4 has going for it is that it's incredibly easy to set up, even for techophobes like yours truly, who have trouble with digital watches, let alone next gen. consoles. Once you get set up, the home screen has been simplified greatly from the PS3, which sometimes felt like it was designed for developers rather than end users. It's also really simple to connect to Facebook and you can organise your settings so your games, trophies etc will automatically upload to the social networking site, or if you'd rather the world not know how terrible you are at driving games, you can choose to keep that information secret. The controller is brand new, featuring a touchpad front and centre and a light bar facing your TV,  as well as the more traditional PlayStation D-pad, twin joysticks and the usual circle, triangle, x and square buttons, along with the four shoulder pads. Instead of Start, however, we now have an Options button, which pretty much does the same thing as ye olde Start. There's a new Share button, on the left of the touch pad, which allows you to take screenshots and videos and upload them to the aforementioned Facebook or Twitter pretty much instantaneously and easily.

The techie stuff reveals that the system supports 1080p HD resolution, sports superb PC architecture, including an enhanced Graphics Processing Unit and 8GB of unified system memory, all of which means that games will look and sound miles better than they did on the good ship PS3.

Those of you with a PS Vita will love the connectivity, which pretty much allows you to play any PS4 title on your Vita via WiFi, thus allowing your better half to watch Strictly Come Dancing while you shoot some bad guys in the bathroom, if you were so inclined.... ahem.

Killzone.

Even if you don't own a Vita, the PlayStation app will allow your PS4 to connect to tablets and smartphones (both iOS and Android), allowing them to become a second screen, which could, for example, display a map during game play or purchase a game from the PlayStation store remotely and have it download to your PS4's 500GB hard-drive, ready for you when you get home.

Other apps available at launch include cloud-based digital music streaming service, Music Unlimited, an optimised version of games site IGN, music video streaming service, VidZone, and Netflix, with more to be added all the time – unfortunately the BBC's iPlayer and Sports are UK-only apps.

So what else is new? Well, there's a wonderful part of the new PS4 home screen called The Playroom, which is essentially a showcase for some of the console's more innovative features – although you will need a PlayStation camera (which doesn't come as standard) to utilise them. Slapping a virtual robot upside the head or making mini AR Bots dance inside your controller is gimmicky, certainly, but it's also just a little big magical and a whole load of fun – as is kicking said AR bots around your living room.

The Playroom.

The other big difference between the PS4 and its immediate predecessor is that rather than try to be all things to all men and women at launch, PlayStation has returned to its roots, declaring that this is for the players, putting games and gamers at the heart of everything it does. But does it succeed? Yes, and then some, if the launch line-up is anything to go by.

Marvel's Super Heroes.

The big first party titles include fun action platformer, Knack, and tense FPS Killzone Shadow Fall, which feels like the best game in the series to date after only an hour or two of play, while there are a host of big third party games available from launch, including the wonderful Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, as well as FIFA 14, the beautiful game rarely looking so lovely, and Need For Speed Rivals, the latest instalment in EA's long-running arcade racer. Other launch highlights include Lego Marvel Super Heroes, which pits everyone's favourite caped crusaders against Doctor Doom and his minions in a typically wacky adventure, and Call Of Duty: Ghosts, in which you get to play some missions as a trained Alsatian attack dog in an imaginary future war (no, I'm not kidding).

Call of Duty: Ghosts.

There are also some downloadable titles on the PSN, including addictive arcade shooter, Resogun, cult puzzle title, Escape Plan (which will be familiar to Vita players), WWII-based MMO, War Thunder, and 1920s style film noir adventure, Contrast.

With games like Drive Club, Infamous: Second Son and, particularly, UbiSoft's Watchdogs already lined up for 2014, the future looks very bright indeed for Sony's new console.

The Spinning Heart wins Guardian Award

Tipperary author Donal Ryan has won the £10,000 Guardian First Book Award 2013 for his debut novel, The Spinning Heart.

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize this year, Ryan also won Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards in 2012.

The Spinning Heart focuses on rural life in recession-hit Ireland, and is narrated by 21 characters.

Lisa Allardice, Editor of Guardian Review and Chair of the Guardian First Book Award judging panel, said: "Slim in size, ambitious in structure and devastating in its emotional force, The Spinning Heart is a bravura performance."

Allardice continued: "Donal Ryan gives voice to those who are more used to silence and to feelings that are often unexpressed: the 21 internal monologues come together as a great cry of pain from a community in crisis.

"It was a tough decision, as always, but here is a new novelist whom we all felt we would be hearing more from in the future."

Read our review of The Spinning Heart at: www.rte.ie/ten/reviews/books/2012/1217/445872-ryand/.

Paul Mason, novelist and member of the judging panel, said: "When someone pops up and says, 'I'm going to tell the entire story of how a country was ripped off, and its illusions shattered, in the voices of twenty-odd nobodies from a rural town, and here's the demotic language, and here's the poetry and bitterness of working class life' - and then delivers, in their first novel, you've just got to stand back and applaud.

"There were two or three strong contenders but what stood out for me was Ryan's audacity."

RTÉ art winner 'amazed' by Toy Show set

The decorations are up and the Christmas lights are in place, and now news2day art competition winner, Robert Dunne, is set to switch on the RTÉ Christmas lights within the next hour!

Robert (11) and his younger brother, James, and sister, Rachel, came all the way from Dromahane, Mallow, Co. Cork with their proud parents to show off his wonderful drawing.

Speaking about his big win, an excited Robert said: "Well at first I was really shocked. It's kind of sinking in now. It's so cool to be walking around RTÉ and seeing the Fair City set. The Toy Show set is so cool. I also loved seeing the news room where they do the Six One News."

He added: "I definitely want to become a news reader after seeing that."

When asked about his beautiful winning creation, Robert added: "At first the bottom of my painting was meant to be white. But then by accident I actually ruined it. It became blue by mistake and looked terrible. I decided to put green over it and it looked fine then."

Robert insisted that lots of detail went into his drawing that took "hours and hours" to make, saying: "Well there's Santa and a reindeer, but it's not Rudolph, and my house is in it too!"

Before he prepared for his next important job, turning on the RTÉ Christmas lights, Robert told Ten what Santa is bringing him for Christmas.

He said: "I want a Kindle HDX for Christmas because I love reading. My favourite book is The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel."

RTÉ Ten review: Carrie ***

The image of Sissy Spacek as a blood-drenched prom queen raining down terrible vengeance on a gym hall full of her tormentors was one of the most striking scenes of seventies cinema's high winter of horror.

It was both a schlocky B-movie homage and a deeply unsettling pose that cut deep into the cliches of idealised American teen life and captured innocence lost with a confrontational glee.

In this faithful remake, director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry, Stop Loss) faithfully re-creates Brian De Palma's original Carrie and there are well-observed updates to suit modern mores and tech (social media is a force for bad again). But Carrie 2013 seems rather pointless, especially after a made for TV movie in 2002 and even a stage production of Stephen King's 1974 novel.

However, 16-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz is great in the central role of Carrie White, the naïf who is repressed at home by her religious zealot mother and terrorised at school by her Mean Girls contemporaties. Moretz may not have any of Spacek's ethereal fragility but she nails (as it were) Carrie's mute confusion and fear perfectly.

Mother is played with real conviction by Julianne Moore. She channels Piper Laurie's original dementia brilliantly and her face is like parchment etched with anger and mistrust at the modern world in a house of mouldering gloom, stuffed with religious iconography, and sharp objects which just may come in handy for our good girl gone evil.

At school, Carrie's tormentors are lead by spoilt little bitch Chris (Portia Doubleday) who finds new avenues of cruelty to explore in the modern age. It's all enjoyable revenge-of-the-geek fare but is that enough for viewers jaded by teen movie cliché and Scary Movie satire?

De Palma's Carrie had genuine moments of atmospheric terror before horror made its headlong rush into cheap thrills. This Carrie is solid and watchable but has none of the sheer weirdness of the original.

Beckham wants Brad Pitt for his biopic

Retired footballer David Beckham has described Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt as "the obvious choice" to play him in a film based on his life.

The 38-year-old was asked by UK radio station talkSPORT presenter Colin Murray which actor he would like to portray him, Beckham quipped that "Brad Pitt would be the obvious choice".

Hopefully tongue-in-cheek, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger added: "Him or Leonardo DiCaprio, or maybe Bradley Cooper. They're not bad-looking guys!"

Beckham also spoke about his recent retirement from professional football after a remarkable 20-year career.

"I'm coping pretty well. I had lots of things set up for when I called it a day," he said. "I was very lucky I finished my career on such a high.

"My career was pretty successful over the last 20 years and to be able to finish my career at PSG with a trophy, and then walk away from football, was very special.

"It's never easy retiring and it's not easy to walk away from something that you love but there were a lot of things I had ready to go the minute I stopped playing, that was important.

"I've got a big family, four kids to chase around, that keeps you busy enough. I've not really had the chance to sit down and miss the playing side."

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 November 2013 | 23.37

Wikileaks movie The Fifth Estate has beaten off a gaggle of turkeys including Broken City and Parker to be rated the biggest global box office flop of 2013.

According to Forbes magazine's annual poll, it had the worst takings-to-budget ratio in the past year. The movie, directed by Oscar winner Bill Conden and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, was savaged by critics and largely ignored by cinema-goers.

We didn't like it too much either. Review here.

So far it has made $6m (€4,412,769) of its relatively small $28m (€20m) budget, according to Forbes.

The Fifth Estate did have strong competition for the No 1 slot. In second place is the Sylvester Stallone action movie Bullet to the Head.

Also rated highly in the top of the movie flops was the Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez heist thriller Parker and the truly egregious Broken City, which saw Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe engaged in a scenery chewing contest.

Just in time for Christmas, here's the full list of Forbes' top 10 box office turkeys of 2013

1. The Fifth Estate - 21% return
2. Bullet to the Head - 36% return
3. Paranoia - 39% return

Druid auditorium dedicated to Mick Lally

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 26 November 2013 | 23.37

Galway's Druid Theatre Company has renamed its Druid Lane Theatre the Mick Lally Theatre as a tribute to the late actor.

The auditorium will serve as a permanent reminder of Mick Lally's association with Druid and his love of the stage.

The actor founded the company in 1975 alongside Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen, and he appeared in many Druid productions until his final appearance in 2009.

Mullen said of the dedication: "It keeps Mick alive in our hearts as we go on with our work."

Mick Lally, who was best known for playing Miley on Glenroe, passed away in August 2010.

Bressie gives up Christmas for Ironman dream

Bressie has revealed that he is giving up his Christmas dinner and the associated festivities as he seeks to fulfil his dream of becoming an Ironman triathlete.

The singer and Voice of Ireland coach said: "I have decided to spend the entire festive season completing a 14-day training camp at Club La Santa, Lanzarote, which is the world's number one sport and active holiday resort."

"I will be nowhere near the festive party scene here. Christmas this year is about relocating to Club La Santa, sticking to my training programme and getting my body into the best possible shape. I am 100% committed to becoming an Ironman," he continued.

This week, Bressie began an 18-month training programme which will see him clock up over 1,000 hours to prepare for a 3.8 km swim, 180km bike ride and full 42.2km marathon.

"If I can complete an Ironman that will be the ultimate achievement for me," he said.

"It will mean way more than anything I have achieved as a musician or as a television personality. It is an escape from all of that and it's something just for me."

Bressie, who is now a brand ambassador for Club La Santa, plans to take part in a half Ironman in Austria and five short course marathons in Ireland next summer before his 2015 Ironman in Lanzarote.

Having spoken about overcoming his own mental health issues, Bressie hopes his Ironman preparations will inspire others to use sport to benefit their own mental health.

"This is my medication. Ironman is a new arena for me and fitness is the one thing that seems to work for me," he said.

"... with mental health problems the thing that scares you most is that you cannot control your mind and that it will control you. Taking on the Ironman is my way of taking control and doing something just for me."

He added: "As a musician, I can't control whether people will like my music no more than I can control how people will perceive me as a TV personality.

"But this is in my hands: I can control the type of training and amount of training that I do and having that control is good for my mental health."

Former Take That star Gary Barlow has signed up to a special course to conquer his fear of flying.

The 42-year-old Greatest Day singer has enrolled in Virgin Atlantic's Flying Without Fear course.

Speaking to The Mirror, the X Factor judge said: "I'm scared of flying, especially the take-off. I just don't like it, and yet I have to do so much of it.

"I get really nervous. I do just get on with it and do it because I have to really, but I don't like it and it kind of ruins the whole day because I'm working myself up so much about getting on a plane."

He continued: "Someone from Virgin offered me a course that they do and I said, 'Listen, I'll bring ten other people I know who are really scared'. Apparently once you've done it you're never worried again."

Barlow added: "They talk you through all the noises and explain that this thing is happening for that reason.

"I don't know if it's hypnotherapy or what exactly they do, but it's meant to be brilliant and only takes an hour."

RTÉ TEN's TV Picks for Today

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 22 November 2013 | 23.37

Tonight it's JFK at one end and Alan Carr: Chatty Man and Bottler at the other.

JFK, RTE Two, 9:00pm
When it comes to surreal cinema experiences few can match the spring of 1992 when Oliver Stone rocked up to UCI in Coolock to take part in a Q&A after a screening of his conspiracy thriller epic JFK at the Dublin Film Festival. Bamboozled by three-plus hours of Stone's who, how and why, the questions piled up like Tetris in the audience's brains. One in particular exercised a certain viewer: "I wonder will he go for lunch in the Sheaf O'Wheat in the village?" Ever notice how the most ridiculous things come into your head at the most unlikely of times? Let it be noted that the temptation to ask Stone about his dining arrangements was resisted.

Anyway, anorak mirth and memories aside, Stone's sprawling, controversy-baiting movie has aged well and should keep even the fussiest and faddiest couch-bound from start to finish, regardless of their own opinion of what really happened in Dallas on November 22, 1963. A top-form Kevin Costner plays Jim Garrison, the District Attorney trying to get to the truth. And how about this for a supporting cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, Donald Sutherland, Gary Oldman, Joe Pesci, Kevin Bacon, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and John Candy.  "A mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma" indeed.

Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Channel 4 10:00pm
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Those of us who contend that he of the goofy grin is the best of the sofas and shenanigans bunch have seen nothing in the current series to change that opinion: Carr's twerking and Paul O'Grady's classic story about the waiting game after his pig swallowed his mobile phone are even funnier two weeks later than they were on the night. Expect similar madcap revelations and ribaldry involving comedian Micky Flanagan, actress Sheridan Smith and the Made in Chelsea posse of Spencer, Binky, Mark-Francis, Andy and Lucy. Music comes from Bastille.

Alan Carr

Bottler, TV3 9:00pm
Belonging to the same bric-a-brac of childhood memories as Texan bars (still chewing the one you bought in 1978?), playing kerbs and recording Top of the Pops on audio cassette on a Thursday night, Brendan Grace's schoolboy Bottler has proven himself as a true showbiz survivor in short pants. But can he keep viewers interested for a feature-length special that mixes live action and animation? Well, we'll find out tonight. Expect plenty of coddle and codology as Bottler and pals go wild in 1960s Dublin. This could go either way, but don't be too hard on yourself if your new catchphrase is 'Righ' after watching.

First look: The new Xbox One

Microsoft throw the first punch in the battle of the console heavyweights, the Xbox One hitting the market a week before its Sony counterpart.  But what is it like? John Walshe gives his verdict.

The first thing to say is that it's obviously a Microsoft product. Indeed, anyone who owned  an original Xbox will instantly be at home. It's big, it's solid and it looks and feels like an Xbox. When you turn it on, you're also in familiar territory, as the home screen, the prompts and even the controller, aren't a million miles away from previous versions, which is exactly what you want from a new console – the PS3, in particular, took quite a bit of getting used to after the simplicity of the PS2, while the Xbox 360 was quite a jump from its predecessor.

But when it comes to a new console, it's what's under the lid that counts and here is where the Xbox One puts its predecessors firmly in the shade. It has an 8-core x86 processor, with an amped up 853MHz clock speed, thus allowing you to switch from games to apps and even to films and TV without long lag times. Unlike the Xbox 360, it comes with built-in wireless networking connectivity, so there's no need to go buying add-ons to connect to your wi-fi.

It also ships with eight GB of RAM as standard, along with 32MF eSRAM embedded memory, plus a 500GB hard drive for storage, which you'll need as some of the games take up over 30GB of space. For all this processing power, perhaps the most astonishing thing is that the console is remarkably quiet. Its predecessor sometimes felt like a Harrier jump-jet taking off, but the Xbox One is extremely easy on the ears, even when in full flow.

It also comes with Kinect as standard, which means that your Xbox One becomes a home exercise machine via Xbox Fitness and you can even use Kinect to navigate your way around some games, which really does feel like you're stepping into a sci-fi movie, pointing at thin air to make your virtual hands on screen push the buttons. Expect to see the best of this in the months to come, when Kinect Sports Rivals really takes off.

This is all well and good you're thinking, but what about the games? It is a games console, after all. Well, Microsoft would disagree, and say that it's a game and entertainment system, as you can download movies, music and apps, surf the web or Skype your friends, including group chats. But games are certainly important to Xbox One and truth be told, it's in the games that the battle for the hearts and minds of consumers will be won and lost.

The good news is that Xbox One's launch titles are of a seriously high standard. The first person (i.e. Microsoft) launch titles include Forza Motorsport 5, the latest instalment in the long-running and hugely successful racing franchise, which looks and plays better than any game in the series to date, the ever-popular Zoo Tycoon and Ryse: Son Of Rome, a third person combat/action adventure title that looks like doing for the Eternal City what Sony's God Of War did for ancient Greece. Meanwhile, zombie killing extravaganza, Capcom's Dead Rising 3, is an Xbox One exclusive, while third party launch titles include big guns like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Need For Speed Rivals, Call of Duty Ghosts, FIFA 14 and Battlefield 4, with more to follow over the coming weeks.

The ability to watch TV or do anything else you fancy while your game is loading or downloading is a welcome feature, particularly for some of those enormous titles mentioned above, which do take a while to download, no matter how fast your broadband connection: although in a welcome move, the entire game doesn't have to download for you to start playing it.

Of course, there's also a host of smaller downloadable games, from Crimson Dragon, where you get to ride on the back of the gnarly old firebrands, to Powerstar Golf, which does exactly what it says on the tin, or LocoCycle, an arcade-style driving combat game featuring a host of video footage to tell its fantastic tale of a motorbike gone nuts. Expect more detailed games reviews here on RTÉ Ten over the coming weeks.

So the first impressions are that the new Xbox is One seriously impressive piece of kit, that's just going to get better and better as more games and apps stretch its boundaries.

John Walshe

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 20 November 2013 | 23.37

20 hopefuls inch closer to becoming an RTÉ Operation Transformation leader.

Participants from all over Ireland gathered together for the first time in Sportslink gym in Santry earlier today (Nov 20) to be physically and emotionally assessed for possible inclusion in the seventh series which is due to air on RTÉ One in early January 2014.

As part of a live RTÉ Radio 1 broadcast John Murray and his team put the 20 finalists through their paces asking them to share their personal stories; outline why they think they have what it takes to become a leader for Operation Transformation; and how their weight has affected their confidence, lifestyle and wardrobe to date.

Operation Transformation presenter Kathryn Thomas was on hand along with the four OT experts to encourage and motivate the assembled group. Two new experts have joined the panel - Aoife Hearne - a registered dietician and a member of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute and Dr. Ciara Kelly, GP and expert in family health join familiar faces Karl Henry, fitness expert and Dr. Eddie Murphy, a Principle Clinical Pyschologist with the HSE.

Next week, from Monday November 25 to Friday November 29, Kathryn Thomas will travel to the homes of the five selected leaders to unveil their participation in the series live on John's radio show on Radio 1 at 9am.

Speaking in Santry today Kathryn Thomas said, "It's brilliant to be here today ahead of the seventh series. It's a huge undertaking to become an Operation Transformation leader – there's a camera crew shadowing you constantly. It's intense but that's why it works – it's easier when there's a support network around you who want you to succeed."

John Murray, RTÉ Radio 1 presenter said: "I'm delighted to be back on air in time for the launch of Operation Transformation 2014. We've seen in previous series, and I know only too well, that a healthy body and a healthy mind are so closely connected to each other."

Last year's five leaders - Monica Percy, Deirdre Hosford, Charlotte O'Connell, Gavin Walker and Greg Starr surpassed their original series targets and collectively lost 11 stone 6 pounds.

Robbie wanted chart showdown with Gary Barlow

Robbie Williams says he wanted a chart showdown with Gary Barlow to hype the release of their new solo albums but Barlow wasn't so keen.

Williams' new album Swings Both Ways came out yesterday and Barlow's fourth solo release, Since I Saw You Last, is due this Friday.

"Originally, I thought this is ****ing great but Gary said, no it ****ing isn't!" Robbie told RTÉ Ten. "And I said come on! It will get people in the shops, it will get people talking. Oasis/Blur. It ain't gonna be that level of course but he said I don't wanna do that.

"I said that's such a shame. Gary's a national treasure, he's resurrected his career and he's got a huge audience with X Factor so I said to him there is every chance you will blow me out of the water. I'm just a bit more reckless than Gazz is. He plays his cards close to his chest and he's a master at what he does."

Elsewhere in the interview with Ten, Robbie talks about his 14-month-old daughter Theodora Rose, Swings Both Ways, and why without Take That he might have become a drug dealer. Read it here.

Matt Smith's Doctor Who exit 'brutal' says co-star

Jenna Coleman has described Matt Smith's upcoming Doctor Who exit as both "brutal" and "traumatic".

The actress spoke this morning on ITV's Daybreak about filming Smith's regeneration scene and Peter Capaldi's arrival as the 12th Doctor.

"I knew it was going to be sad, but it was really traumatic," Coleman said. "It was very emotional and overwhelming."

The 27-year-old added that "the nature" of Doctor Who - with the show's ever-changing cast - means that filming on the series can be "so brutal".

"It's a strange thing [but] it's the nature of the show," she conceded.

"Matt leaves, Peter arrives in his costume and the scene carries on. You just keep going - that's the show."

The Doctor Who 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor airs on Saturday November 23 at 7.50pm on BBC One. It will also be simulcast worldwide, and screened in cinemas around the globe.

Cycle Against Suicide album launched

A number of Ireland's leading musicians have grouped together with The Voice of Ireland coach Bressie, to record a special album to support the Cycle Against Suicide campaign.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, presenter of 2fm's Colm Hayes Show, the campaign's media partner and the launch host, said: "Bressie is so involved in the cycle and he said he wanted to get involved in the album and put the album together. He got all the artists, convinced them to perform them for absolutely nothing…

"We've put together a beautiful album called The Simple Things. It features Ryan O'Shaughnessy, Pat Byrne, the Dublin Gospel Choir, Heathers of course. Their song Forget Me Knots is like our anthem for the Cycle Against Suicide and the big collaboration of all the artists together doing a song which is just so good, called The Simple Things.

Bressie added: "The cycle was from the fitness side of things…and I wanted to bring in from the creative musical side of things.

"The people, like myself and Jim [Breen] try to do everything but we have our own struggles.

"It goes through your head when you're singing and everything you've done up to that point. It's hard talking about mental health because you're head goes straight back to the days [which] you might have lost in your bed.

"So up their singing and seeing all the artists committing to what we were doing was very emotional.

The Simple Things features 14 original tracks and one spoken word piece from artists including Bressie, Heathers, the Dublin Gospel Choir, Hudson Taylor, Marty Mulligan, Orla Gartland, Ryan O'Shaughnessy, Gavin James, Danny O'Reilly, James Walsh, Ryan Sheridan, Pat Byrne, SOAK, Paul Walsh, Keenan Copas, John Gaughan, and The Original Rudeboys.

Simple Things is available to buy now and for further information visir www.cycleagainstsuicide.com.

It is expected that the video, which lasts 3 minutes 40 seconds, will be included in the Breaking Bad season 5 box-set which is set for release later this month.

The 23-year-old star hopes her fans can empathise with her honest songs.

Speaking to New York magazine, Swift said: ''I think allowing yourself to feel raw, real emotions in public is something I am never going to be afraid to do.

''Hopefully that's the case, if I can remain a real human. I'm fine with being honest with my fans about the fact that it's okay that everything isn't okay all the time.

''I love my life, I love my career, I love my friends - but things are not OK all the time. So I don't sing about things being OK all the time.''

Swift further explained that she plans to mainly write songs when she gets older, adding: ''When I'm 40 and nobody wants to see me in a sparkly dress any more, I'll be, like, 'Cool, I'll just go in the studio and write songs for kids.' It's looking like a good pension plan.''

Interview: Broken Song director Claire Dix

Harry Guerin talks to Claire Dix, the director of the award-winning Irish documentary Broken Song.

Winner of the Michael Dwyer Discovery Award and the Audience Award at this year's Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Broken Song is a great reminder that when it comes to cinema it's always best to leave your preconceptions in the foyer. You don't have to know about, or indeed even like, Irish hip-hop to enjoy this film. In fact, you'll probably get more out of Claire Dix's documentary if you're a complete novice.

Filmed in Ballymun and Finglas, Broken Song takes us into the worlds of three performers: Costello, GI and Willa Lee. Initial fears that Dix's gorgeous quayside opening sequence would be followed by a blizzard of hip-hop bravado and machismo prove unfounded: Broken Song turns out to be a surprisingly moving and uplifting snapshot of life on the fringes of a city, an economy and an industry.

Harry Guerin: What was the magnet that drew you to this story - were you a fan of hip-hop?
Claire Dix:
I didn't know anything about the Irish hip-hop scene before I met GI and Costello. I was working with Dublin Community Television, DCTV, on a series about community arts. I met Dean Scurry that way - Dean is their kind of manager in the film. He was working in the axis centre in Ballymun and we asked him what projects he was working on and he said: 'There's a lot of hip-hop going on out here'.

So introductions were made to GI and Costello...
I met them in a room in the resource centre in Ballymun and they rapped unaccompanied - they'd no beats with them or anything. There was just something about the way they rapped and what they were saying, it was just something I hadn't really heard before. What was interesting for me was that it felt very genuine. They were rapping in their own accents, they were talking about what was going on around them and there was very little resemblance to the kind of commercial, mainstream hip-hop that I would have known about. I said to Dean: 'I think there's something here'.

Broken Song

How long from that first meeting to the finished film?
We met them in 2010 and it was the end of 2011 before we got funded, so 2012 before we started filming. We would've been meeting up with them every so often to say: 'Well what kind of film would you be interested in getting involved in?'. Together we shaped it.

Was it hard to earn GI, Costello and Willa's trust?
I think what really helped us is that I would have worked with Dean a couple of times on that programme for DCTV and then we did another programme about comedy in the new communities around Dublin. Because he's their manager, and they've known him for so long, they kind of said: 'Well, look, if Dean thinks these guys are okay...'.

That's obvious from how natural and open they are on screen.
They were very trusting and I'm very grateful for that leap of faith that they took. I know they're happy with the film; they've said they're happy with it. From very early on they knew the angle we were coming from and I suppose because it took a while to get it funded they reckoned: 'Ok, these people are kind of serious because they are sticking with it'.

Broken Song is 65 minutes long. Would you have liked for the film to be longer, or were you happy that you had everything in?
We filmed a lot more stuff that didn't make it in, so I think we said what we wanted to say. I didn't keep a tab on how many hours [we shot], but we were filming on and off from March to November in 2012. Because it's observational, you have to film an awful lot before you can construct your narrative. We didn't really want to have a voice going: 'Now, this is what you're looking at now...'. We really did want it to kind of flow and let the audience feel like they're a part of the world.

You've been a part of that world - what were the biggest eye-openers for you in making the movie or the big lessons you learned?
It was learning about this whole scene that I really knew nothing about. What was amazing was walking around some areas of Finglas and Ballymun and all these young fellas just coming up to the two lads [GI and Costello] [and saying]: 'Oh do you want to listen to what I've been writing?'. The amount of time that Costello and GI had [for them] - a big thing was that they took so much time out of their day to work with all the young fellas.

I suppose another thing is how important it is to be able to express yourself. It's so obvious in a way, but it's just not that obvious for some young kids in the city. To be able to put [words] down on paper and to speak up and to say what you're feeling is not actually that easy for a lot of people. And the difference that it [hip-hop] was making and is making in the lives of a lot of these kids - that was a bit of an eye-opener.

Broken Song is at the IFI now and screens at axis Ballymun on November 27.
