Cork woman has Joe Dolan's hip for sale

A Cork woman who bought Joe Dolan's hip bone on eBay for €690 is seeking a new owner for the late singer's body part.

Maggie Keating (39) from Mitchelstown in Cork, told Mark Prendeville on Cork radio station Red FM that she has been a fan of Dolan's since she was 17.

"My mother followed him from her dancing days so his music would have always been on in the house when I was growing up," she said.

"I went to my first concert of his when I was 17 and from around 1995 we would have been very friendly, I met him loads.

"He was very down to earth and would have always come over to chat."

She also has a suit of Joe's which her sister-in-law Bridget bought in aid of Daffodil Day. She thought she'd add to her collection when Dolan was convinced on The Podge & Rodge Show to sell his old hip - following a hip replacement, of course - for Autism Action.

Keating eventually bought the hip, signed by Joe Dolan, for €690 after an auction on eBay.  And when he died in 2007, she took comfort from displaying it in her house.

"It was always nice to look up and see it, it was on display in my house but then some people would pretend to bite it as a joke or throw it to the dog so I wrapped it up and put it away in case it would break," she said.

Now she wants to sell it but body parts can no longer be sold on eBay, so Red FM are helping her to find a buyer.

"I don't know how much it would even be worth but I have had my joy from it and now maybe it would be time for someone else to, if I could get the right money for it," she said.

RTÉ TEN'S top TV picks for Thursday April 16

Home of the Year (8.30pm RTÉ One) continues as the judges visit three very different homes, from a surprising semi-detached home in Kildare to a cottage retreat in Wicklow and finally a converted church in Co Galway. How to Get Away with Murder (10.00pm RTÉ 2) continues, and, if you are around the house at 4.00pm do not miss Bob Marley's Catch A Fire in Sky Arts' Classic Albums repeats.

Home of the Year, 8.30pm RTÉ One

This week the judges are off to three very different homes, from a surprising semi-detached home in Kildare to a cottage retreat in Wicklow and finally a converted church in Co Galway. The Eaton family live in a red-bricked, semi-detached home in Co. Kildare and their interior décor includes the 1960's turquoise suite which came from the American Embassy in Dublin. Jeanne lives in a new build cottage in Co. Wicklow with her partner Mark. Her home is built from Wicklow granite and river stone and she has done all the interior design herself. Chris Deakin and Orla Mc Cluskey live in a converted church in Co. Galway. Chris bought the property, parts of which have been there since 1820, in 2005 and spent the next two and a half years converting it into two-bedroom family home.

How to Get Away with Murder, 10.00pm RTÉ2

Not too late to catch up on this brilliant series. Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) is a tough as nails Criminal Law Professor who challenges her students to solve some of the most difficult criminal cases. A shocking discovery in Sam's case changes everything for Annalise and the students in tonight's episode.

How to Get Away with Murder

Bob Marley and the Wailers - Catch a Fire, 4.00pm Sky Arts 1

Sky Arts regularly show this in their Classic Albums repeats and for anyone who plays music, it is essential viewing. So stay in today or set the record button. Witness the care and cleverness that went into the production of The Wailers' fifth album, or, if you will, the band's first for Chris Blackwell's Island records. Even learning how the Texan John 'Rabbit' Bundrick was wheeled in to play keyboards  - knowing nothing much about reggae at all -  is fascinating. Released in April 1973, Catch A Fire is listed at number 126 on Rolling Stone?'s list of 500 Greatest Albums. That gives it the second highest placement of the five listed Marley albums, next after the posthumous compilation hits album, Legend. Picture shows a man walking past a mural of Bob Marley in Kingston, Jamaica in 2009.

Watch! TEN talks to Glassland star Jack Reynor

With his new film Glassland in cinemas from Friday April 17, actor Jack Reynor has told TEN that festival audiences' "massive positive response" to the Gerard Barrett-directed drama has taken him by surprise.

In Glassland Reynor plays John, a struggling Dublin taxi driver who reaches a crossroads in his life as he tries to save his mother Jean (Toni Collette) from addiction.

Earlier this year, the Wicklow actor won the Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival for his performance. The film has also won critics and audience awards at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival and Galway Film Fleadh respectively.

Speaking about the reaction at festivals to Glassland, Reynor said: "I didn't expect, I suppose, such an overwhelmingly positive response in a way.

"I think we knew, even the weekend after we wrapped the film, that we had something quite special in the can. But I really couldn't have anticipated such a massive positive response everywhere we've gone with the film, and we're just really thrilled by it."

Glassland is in cinemas nationwide on Friday, April 17.

Soul legend Percy Sledge dies aged 73

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 14 April 2015 | 23.37

Percy Sledge, best known for the hit When A Man Loves A Woman, has died aged 73.

The news was confirmed by Sledge's management agency which said he passed away at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"He was a wonderful guy in a terrible business," said Steve Green with Artists International Management, Inc said. "He was truly a standout."

Born in Alabama in 1941, Sledge worked in a succession of jobs including as a hospital nurse before he achieved success in the mid-to-late 1960s and early '70s with a series of emotional soul songs.

When a Man Loves a Woman was released in March 1966 and was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK it improved on its top four charting on re-release in 1987, when it reached number two.

Even more notably, When a Man Loves a Woman was also the first gold record achieved by Atlantic Records.

And although Sledge enjoyed several other hits, including Warm and Tender Love and I'll Be Your Everything, he never reached the plateau achieved with his first, and most recognisable hit.

Here's Percy Sledge singing When a Man Loves a Woman:

Edna O'Brien announces first novel in ten years

Edna O'Brien will publish her new novel, The Little Red Chairs, a story about a wanted war criminal who settles in a small Irish village, next February.

A press releases from publisher Faber reads: "When a wanted war criminal, masquerading as a healer, settles in a small Irish village, the community is in thrall.  One woman, Fidelma McBride, falls under his spell.

"In this searing novel, Edna O'Brien charts the consequence of that fatal attraction. This is a story about love, the artifice of evil and the terrible necessity of accountability in our shattered, damaged world."

Lee Brackstone, Creative Director, Faber said: 'It has been ten years since the last novel from Edna O'Brien and The Little Red Chairs reminds us why she is recognised as one of the great Irish writers, of any generation.

"Edna has gone deep into the darkness for this book and she  returns with a book of monumental emotional intelligence and courage.

"The novel burns with a fierce lyricism and dares to suggest there is a way back to redemption and hope when great evil is done. It may be her masterpiece."

84-year-old O'Brien was born in Tuamgraney, County Clare and since her debut novel The Country Girls, she has written over twenty novels.

She has also written for the theatre, and penned short story collections and biographies of James Joyce and Lord Byron.

She is the recipient of many awards including the Irish Pen Lifetime Achievement Award, the American National Art's Gold Medal and the Ulysses Medal.

Sue Perkins reacts to Top Gear `death threats'

Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins has said she has been receiving death threats over recent speculation that she is set to take Jeremy Clarkson's place as the new presenter of Top Gear.

Perkins has since rubbished the rumours but fans of the show have been reacting strongly to the speculation.

This morning (April 14), Perkins tweeted: "Guys, post the utterly fabricated story about me & Top Gear, my timeline has been full of blokes wishing me dead . . . "

She followed her message up by tweeting: "This morning, someone suggested they'd like to see me burn to death." and announced that she would be taking a break from social media.

Last Thursday, Perkins, who is filming in India, tweeted: "Just back from night shoot in Kolkata sewers to find my timeline busy with middle-aged man-trolls. General gist: Man do cars, woman do cake".

On the Box - Weekly TV Review

John Byrne checks out the return of Mad Men (Thursdays, Sky Atlantic); a new serial killer in The Following (Saturday, Sky Atlantic); and a break from the norm in Scandal (Thursday, Sky Living)

You don't need a deerstalker and a pipe to get the distinct impression that things will not end well on Mad Men. Now back on Thursday nights on Sky Atlantic for the seven remaining episodes of its seventh season, this final segment of the show is called End of an Era, which could mean a lot more than the languid drama's departure from the 1960s.

Dreams have been a constant theme throughout this most grown-up of TV show's run. During one nap in this returning episode Don Draper dreamed about an old flame, Rachel Menken of the Menken department store, and later discovered that she had just died of leukemia.

While out with Roger Sterling (now sporting a vaudevillian moustache) and a posse of females, a waitress in a diner reminded him of Menken, and so he returned to see her and they had sex out the back while she was on a smoke break. Talk about living for the moment . . .

Back at the office, Ken Cosgrove discovered that he could follow on his wife's advice to quit work and write the book that he's been itching to complete for the guts of a decade - by getting sacked. The new owners of the company, who previously employed Cosgrove until he left in less than ideal circumstances, callously get rid of him. But their deed backfires when he returns as a customer, the new head of advertising for Dow Corning, explaining that he's very hard to please. For Ken, the desire for revenge is a greater motivator than the urge to be creative. Anger is an energy and all that.

Now on the upper sphere in work, Joan and Peggy are enjoying their lofty perch, although they have had to stomach some puerile sexism at a meeting with male counterparts at McCann. Peggy found it more displeasing than Joan, who cattily remarked about their physical differences, which was at least as offensive as the frat boy behaviour.

Mad Men has never been shy about using music to make a point and this episode was no different. Peggy Lee's version of Is That All There Is? book-ended the hour and left me wondering about Don Draper's inner demons and Lieber & Stoller's ode to disillusionment. While everyone around him seems to be trapped in their version of fateful inevitability, can Don come to terms with how life has worked out for him, gradually fading into the background - or will he take a leap off a building, like the one featured in the show's opening credits since Mad Man began?

There's only so much chin-rubbing and contemplation anyone can muster in these days of meagre introspection, and an hour spent watching The Following (Saturday, Sky Atlantic) is as good as any for subconsciously exorcising inner demons that have built up over the course of a week. Third-party violence works for so many people, it's quite scary when you start thinking about it. Game of Thrones, anyone?

And making dead bodies would appear to be the point of this show. Kevin Bacon's serial killer-hunting FBI man Ryan Hardy is something of a murder magnet, as over the course of two-and-a-bit seasons he's crossed quite a few and the body count is massive.

This episode moved things up a notch or two as we got a full blast of Theo, the latest serial killer who's quite the sociopathic poster boy. This guy is cool, calm, collected, and carving, and played with chilling believability by Michael Ely. The Following is definitely on a daft level all of its own, resting on a level of blood-soaked horror somewhere between the mildly-scary Criminal Minds and the genuinely disturbing Hannibal. That TV show treats cannibalism and serial killing as lifestyle choices, mere consumerism.

Finally, Scandal (Thursdays, Sky Living). For once it was an episode almost – I said almost – devoid of tantrum-throwing by the usual suspects. Instead there was an understandably angry black man with a gun and questions about his son. The son was shot dead in dubious circumstances by a white policeman just a few blocks from the White House. Considering all that's been going on in recent times in the USA, this is a subject that's not just topical, it's red hot.

This was also an episode that took its foot off the gas in terms of the overall arc and all that B613 stuff, so it was quite a relief as well as being hugely enjoyable, as Olivia Pope and her team went back to basics and sought to determine the truth behind the shooting.

You've got to hand it to Shonda Rhimes, the brains behind this and several other shows, including long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy and the wilfully confusing How to Get Away with Murder. She's black, she's a woman, and extremely successful in a male-dominated, largely white environment.

Regardless of her obvious talent, she wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the position she's in now if she lived in Don Draper's time.

John Byrne

Reynor facing lawsuit over alleged LA collision

Written By Unknown on Senin, 13 April 2015 | 23.37

Jack Reynor is facing a $2 million (€1.8m) lawsuit over an alleged collision which took place in 2012.

According to court papers seen by the Herald, the Transformers star is being sued alongside his Delivery Man co-star Brittany Leanna Robertson following the alleged incident with Loren Dehenes and Julie Shepherd.

They claim the 23-year-old actor struck them with his car while driving through a crossing at Franklin Avenue and Beachwood Drive in Los Angeles on November 14, 2012.

The two women are seeking damages for $1 million each for the "pain, suffering and inconvenience" they experienced after the alleged incident.

The women claim that Reynor and Robertson, along with Robertson's company Freedom Artists Entertainment, showed "general negligence", causing personal injury and are seeking medical expenses, as well as loss of earnings, loss of future earning capacity and property damage.

Reynor has not yet responded to the claims, but the court papers show that Freedom Artists Entertainment has denied "each and every allegation".

TV picks for today Monday April 13

Game of Thrones, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic

Fans of this fantasy drama based on the novels by George RR Martin have been gagging for this fifth season. In the opener, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) struggles to mediate between wildling leader Mance Raydar (Ciarán Hinds) and new Castle Black arrival Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) while, in King's Landing, a mournful Cersei (Lena Headey) continues to worry for her son, King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman). Elsewhere, Tyrion is presented with a fresh possibility and Daenerys grapples with politics and dragons. Yawn.

Modern Family, 8.00pm, Sky 1

Motherhood seems to have changed Mitch and Cam's pal Sal when - along with Pepper - they throw a belated baby shower. As for the Dunphys, after enjoying/enduring a weekend with Phil's old cheer buddies, Claire doesn't hesitate in nabbing the only first class seat on the return flight home, leaving her hubby in economy. It's a move she comes to regret. Gloria, meanwhile, asks Jay to show Manny how to defend himself against a bully in his cooking class.

Travel Man: 48 Hours in Iceland, 8.30pm, Channel 4

Richard Ayoade takes actor and writer Jessica Hynes on a weekend away to the stunning scenery of Iceland. This is a country famous for exploding natural water features, geo-thermic pools and a curious belief in elves - all attributes that Richard and Jessica investigate with ruthless efficiency. They go on the popular Golden Circle Tour of Iceland's most famous waterfalls, glaciers and geysers; eat rotten shark and Brenavin, a spirit made from mashed potato. They also go to elf school.

Game of Thrones: Season 5 Preview

Game of Thrones finally returns to Sky Atlantic on Monday April 13 following its US premiere on HBO on Sunday April 12. Here is a recap of the main storylines, and a preview of what's to come this season.

"When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground."

With so many plots and sub-plots it can be hard to keep track of everyone's comings and goings in Westeros but don't worry, we have you covered.

Spoilers for anyone not yet up to date on the TV show.

In season one the Stark's of Winterfell were introduced to us as the main characters and through the loss of the honourable Ned Stark we learned a very important GoT lesson – no one is safe. Since then we've had the Red Wedding and while it may seem as though their family is in ruin, each remaining member has a massive part to play in the future of the seven kingdoms.

Sansa has finally escaped King's Landing but while she may be free of Joffrey's torment and Cersei's vengeance, I don't know if 'safe' is a word we would use to describe her situation with Littlefinger. In the Eerie, where her aunt Lysa has met her maker through the Moon Door, Sansa will no doubt be used as a pawn in whatever scheme Littlefinger is plotting next. In the trailer we see him telling her, "There is no justice in the world, not unless we make it. Avenge them." He may have been missing from our screens for a while there, but Littlefinger, the puppet-master that he is, orchestrated Joffrey's death with Olenna Tyrell and is sure to be a major player in season five. Sansa may still be married to Tyrion Lannister but with him in hiding in Pentos for the murder of his father Tywin, she could be Littlefinger's ticket to claiming Winterfell, and a stronghold in the North is nothing to be sniffed at, especially if you have a Stark up your sleeve.

Winterfell itself is currently at the hands of the Bolton's and I can't imagine anything worse than giving Ramsay Snow/Bolton a glimmer of power. Until he appeared in the show Joffrey was the worst of the worst but this guy is in a whole other league. We need only look at Theon Greyjoy's fate to be reminded of just how sick and twisted Ramsay can be. Word on the street is he'll be after a wife soon – here's hoping it won't be poor old Sansa.

Arya (and her list) have escaped to Braavos after the youngest Stark daughter left The Hound for dead after an epic and dirty fight with Brienne of Tarth. While Castle Black may have been her ideal destination to catch up with her big brother Jon Snow, the ship was Braavos-bound and with her iron coin and those all-important words 'Valar Morghulis' she gained entry to the ship. Will she reacquaint herself with Jaqen H'ghar while she's there? In the trailer we see her outside the House of Black and White and it looks as though she's throwing her beloved sword Needle in the sea – could Arya be getting rid of her identity in order to become a member of the Faceless Men of Braavos? Whatever she gets up to we're sure it'll be cool.

Rickon, the youngest Stark, was last seen leaving big brother Bran to go to safety, while Bran and Hodor, with Jojen and Meera Reed, continued their journey beyond The Wall. When the group finally reached their destination they came face-to-face with the Three-Eyed Raven and one of The Children of The Forest – the original non-human inhabitants of Westeros. In the season four finale the Child told Bran, "The first men called us The Children, but we were born long before them."

It was announced months ago that this storyline wouldn't feature in the fifth season and having seen the first episode of season five already, we caught up with all of the major players bar this bunch so it looks like it'll be a while until this storyline is picked up on again. While some of Bran's journey was a bit boring in comparison to the other plot-lines – there were no dragons after all – the parting words of the Three-Eyed Raven, "You will never walk again, but you will fly" are sure to take things up a notch. One of Daenerys' dragons is on the loose, will Bran be warging into it in the near future?

Up at Castle Black Jon Snow will no doubt be instrumental in forming an alliance between the Wildlings/Free Folk and wannabe-King Stannis Baratheon. At the end of season four these two forces came face-to-face and we're sure there'll be some drama between Wildling leader Mance Rayder and Stannis if their last encounter is anything to go by. If they can work together it's their best hope against the White Walkers and in terms of Stannis' claim to the Iron Throne, a foothold in The North is the icing on the cake/his real reason for going to The Wall in the first place.

The Night's Watch is currently without a commander and given Jon Snow's popularity among the other members could this be something he takes on?

Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons – what a mouthful – what can we expect from her in season five? Her dragons are out of control and she's been forced to lock them up, one is still on the loose as it stands, so I'm curious as to how she can harness their power and actually train them again before she joins the war for the seat at King's Landing. It's all well and good to say you have dragons but if they're likely to go rogue, how reliant can you be on them?

In the season five trailer we see Lord Varys and Tyrion discussing the potential Queen, "The seven kingdoms need a ruler loved by millions, with a powerful army and the right family name" and having that pair in your corner can't be a bad thing. I'm excited for any scenes that involve Dany and Tyrion and I can't wait until she finally crosses the sea to stake her claim on the Iron Throne.

What will also be interesting to see is how her advisers sway her judgement now that Jorah Mormont (the biggest friendzone victim in modern telly) has been banished. Daario Naharis may be a love interest for Dany but will he try to use that to his advantage? I hope he won't, he's a beautiful man and it'd be great if she could just be happy, but I've seen too many episodes of Game of Thrones to trust him, or anyone else for that matter, implicitly.

Back in King's Landing things are going to be rough on Cersei following the death of Tywin. With Joffrey dead, her daughter Myrcella in Dorne, Jaime betraying her trust by freeing Tyrion, and Margaery Tyrell set to sink her claws into Tommen, will she be able to hold down the fort and keep the remaining Lannisters in power?

The Tyrells are growing stronger and once other families hear that Tywin is no more, it's only a matter of time before they all start sniffing around and seizing their opportunity to strike. What's more, if the other Lannisters that we haven't gotten to know yet show up (didn't one of them help her with poisoning King Robert way back?) that could spell trouble too because if they're all as ruthless and power-hungry as the ones we do know, things could get interesting.

What will become of the Lannister home in Casterly Rock? We've seen Tywin begging Jaime to leave the King's Guard in order to start a family and look after their land and people there, to which he refused because he'd rather stay in King's Landing and protect his son/nephew/king than continue his family legacy. Now that Tywin is dead, will Jaime have a change of heart and grant his father's wish? We can't see him upping and leaving Cersei and Tommen but who knows... Perhaps he and Brienne of Tarth could elope and live happily every after? Who am I kidding, there are no happily ever after's in Game of Thrones.

With Olenna having orchestrated Joffrey's death, Margaery has her sights set on her third Baratheon husband – young Tommen. Renly and Joffrey have both been murdered so I wonder if it's a case of third time's the charm for her. Cersei was set to marry Margaery's brother Ser Loras but given the fact that Tywin was behind that match, we're sure the Queen Regent will put an end to that engagement pretty swiftly and stick around King's Landing to protect her son from Margaery's influence/use his power to do her own bidding.

Tommen and Margaery's wedding is previewed in the trailer for season five and weddings in GoT never run smoothly so even if the happy couple manage to make it through the festivities this time around, we're sure someone else won't get off as lightly.

Dorne will play a huge part in season five with Oberyn Martell's daughters The Sand Snakes set to make their first appearance in the show. His three daughters, all extremely skilled fighters, will be out to avenge their father who died at the hands of The Mountain. With Myrcella in Dorne, she's bound to become a pawn in this game of revenge. If something should happen to Tommen would she, and her Dornish husband, have a claim to the throne?

A big question I would like answered this season - where is Gendry? It's been a long time since Ser Daavos Seaworth sent Robert Baratheon's son out to sea to escape Melisandre and we've yet to catch up with the actual heir to the throne. Is he lost at sea? Did he go into hiding? We just want some kind of update on his whereabouts!

So as it stands, the main players for the Iron Throne are:

Tommen Baratheon - the pressumed son of King Robert and the next King. He's actually the son of Jaime and Cersei Lannister so he has no legit claim at all really in the same way his big brother Joffrey was never a rightful king.

Stannis Baratheon - the brother of the late King Robert Baratheon. Has a valid claim to the throne, even Ned Stark agreed, but he's busy at The Wall now planning to protect the realm from the White Walkers because if there's no people to rule, what's the point?

Daenerys Targaryen - her claim to the throne goes back to her father King Aerys II Targaryen, who was removed from the throne by Robert Baratheon following the rebellion.

Outsiders:

Gendry - he's one of probably many children that King Robert has out there and perhaps somewhere down the line, if he doesn't just go into hiding forever then his lineage may be revealed and people will decide that he deserves the throne. Given that his own uncle Stannis didn't support him I'm not full of hope that he'd manage to pull together an army. From what we've seen of him it doesn't seem as though he would have any interest in power anyway.

Jon Snow - if the rumours about his parentage are true then he would have a stronger claim to the throne than Dany. Dany's older brother Rhaegar was the heir to the throne during their father King Aerys' reign and he began Robert's Rebellion after he kidnapped Lyanna Stark (Ned's sister) from Robert and brought her to Dragonstone. If the rumours are true, Jon is actually Lyanna and Rhaegar's son, not Ned's bastard as we are led to believe. In season one Ned vowed to tell Jon Snow about his mother when he returned from King's Landing, but he never did return to Winterfell so the truth never came out. Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch is a Targaryen but as he has taken his vows he has given up any claim he should have to the throne. While the same would be true for Jon, he's already broken a few of the vows so who is to say he wouldn't break another one if it meant becoming King? I'd be happy with either him or his potential aunt Dany sitting on the throne to be honest. If he is actually Ned's son, and the theories about his parents are false, I'd still love to see him in King's Landing, face-to-face with some of the other major players.

Having seen the first episode of the fifth season I'm pretty sure that's all the reminders and re-caps you'll need if you don't have time to re-watch any of the show before it all kicks off again on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on April 13.

Reynor says Glassland not about shattering Richard

With Glassland opening on April 17, star Jack Reynor has told RTÉ TEN that he did not choose his down-at-heel role as a way to put distance in the public's mind from the privileged character he played in another acclaimed Irish drama, What Richard Did

In Glassland, Reynor plays John, a struggling Dublin taxi driver who reaches a crossroads in his life as he tries to save his mother Jean (Toni Collette) from addiction.

Earlier this year, Reynor won the Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival for his performance in the film.

When asked by RTÉ TEN whether his What Richard Did role was a factor in choosing Glassland as a project, Reynor replied: "I don't think that would have been any part of my conscious decision-making. Or subconscious, really.

"I think that I, as a person, relate an awful lot more to John than I do to Richard."

He continued: "I was brought up in Blessington in Co Wicklow and my family weren't particularly affluent... I understand the processes that these people [Glassland's characters] go through, probably more so than I would Richard in a lot of ways.

"For me, I think I was, in a way, more confident in this than I had been [starring] in Richard. But it certainly wasn't to try to make a statement or anything like that."

Watch out for a video interview with Reynor and Glassland writer-director Gerard Barrett on RTÉ TEN in the coming days.

Former X Factor winner would consider Corrie role

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 11 April 2015 | 23.37

The 2009 winner of The X Factor, Joe McElderry, has said he would "definitely consider" a role in soaps Coronation Street or Emmerdale.

The 23-year-old The Climb singer told Digital Spy: "I'd love to do a soap – I think that would be fun. But I would always do it alongside singing because I think I'd miss the singing too much."

"But I'd definitely consider it; I'd love to do a little role in something," he continued.

"I do enjoy acting. I suppose I act a little bit through performing songs, and I think as you're doing the pantos and stuff and learning how to ad-lib on the spot – that's been a great lesson in terms of drama."

When asked which soaps he would like to appear on, McElderry replied: "I think I could do Emmerdale or Coronation Street. Somehow I don't think I've got the accent for EastEnders, so I'll leave that to the southerners!"

Kanye West compares ego to marble table

Rapper Kanye West has compared his ego to a marble table and has said that fatherhood and marriage have changed him.

In an interview with the New York TimesT Magazine, the 37-year-old said: "I feel like now I have an amazing wife, a super-smart child and the opportunity to create in two major fields. Before I had those outlets, my ego was all I had."

Speaking about moving into his new house, West said: "I have this table in my new house. They put this table in without asking. It was some weird nouveau riche marble table, and I hated it.

"But it was literally so heavy that it took a crane to move it. We would try to set up different things around it, but it never really worked."

He added: "I realised that table was my ego. No matter what you put around it, under it, no matter who photographed it, the d*****baggery would always come through."

Corrie's Kate Ford: 'I don't like being single'

Coronation Street actress Kate Ford has discussed her recent divorce from TV producer Jon Connerty and has said she does not "like being single".

The 38-year-old star, who plays Tracy Barlow in the ITV soap, also revealed that she would like to be married again.

Speaking to Woman magazine, she said: "I don't particularly like being single. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of family life and I'd like to be married again.

"Sometimes I just want to come home and have somebody to tell about my day. If I didn't have my son I would have found my divorce harder. Having Otis made it bearable, because it's forced me to go out and meet people."

Ford also revealed that ageing bothers her more now that she is single, saying: "Ageing bothered me less when I was married. Being older and single is harder than being 25 and single.

"You feel it's more daunting to start again when you're approaching 40 than when you're approaching 30. That's one thing that has made my marriage break-up harder."

When asked if she has any similar traits to her on-screen character, Ford replied: "Tracy Barlow is supremely confident, she feels like she could have any man she wanted. She likes to feel as if she's gorgeous to men, but I'm not like that at all."

Worldwide deal for TG4 thriller An Bronntanas

French distributor Lagardère Entertainment (LE) Rights has agreed a deal to distribute the award-winning TG4 thriller series An Bronntanas (The Gift) worldwide.

Commenting on the deal, An Bronntanas producer Ciarán Ó Cofaigh said: "International drama is a highly competitive market; it is an achievement in itself to be chosen by such a key distributor in this arena."

Ó Cofaigh continued: "Between crew, cast and funders, we always believed that we had delivered a drama series that can compete on a world stage. LE Rights see the series as having great potential, and this acquisition is testament to that."

Frederick Range, LE Rights, Head of Acquisitions, added: "We are delighted to distribute An Bronntanas worldwide; it is a great addition to our slate."

Range continued: "We distribute a lot of long-running French series, but very few miniseries, so we are so thrilled to have a series of this calibre and excellence to take to market at MIP (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision) in Cannes."

He added: "We will be showcasing about 25 new titles across documentary, fiction, youth and animation. An Bronntanas will be one of six new exciting fiction properties. It's a great story - very well written and produced - we really believe it will have huge appeal for the international market."

Directed by Tom Collins (Kings), and starring Dara Devaney (Na Cloigne), Owen McDonnell (Single Handed) and John Finn (Cold Case), An Bronntanas tells the story of the crew of a local independent lifeboat in Connemara who find over a million euro worth of drugs on an abandoned fishing boat.

The film version of An Bronntanas recently won the Jury's Special Award at the Boston Irish Film Festival and the thriller has received three nominations for next month's Gradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais in Galway, including Best Television Series.

On the Box - Weekly TV Preview

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 10 April 2015 | 23.37

John Byrne's TV choices for the week ahead (Dates covered: Saturday April 11 to Friday April 17)

Game of Thrones and Britain's Got Talent are back, while it's a one-way ticket to TV Heaven for The Mentalist.

Pick of the week

Game of Thrones, Monday, Sky Atlantic

I have to admit that fantasy tales with dragons and hairy blokes with big swords hold about as much interest to me as a week on the Hindu Kush, and after just two episodes I couldn't bear to watch any more Game of Thrones or care less about its seven bloomin' kingdoms and some Iron Throne. The world, of course, disagrees, and the arrival of season five will have millions, zillions, maybe even GoTillions of fans of this byzantine blood-fest wondering who's next for the dead pool. You're more than welcome to this X-rated Noggin the Nog.

Anyway. In the opening episode, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) struggles to mediate between wildling leader Mance Raydar (Ciarán Hinds) and new Castle Black arrival Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) while, in King's Landing, a mournful Cersei (Lena Headey) continues to worry for her son, King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman). Elsewhere, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) arrives in a new location and is presented with a fresh possibility and, in Meereen, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) grapples with the politics of power, as well as her tempestuous dragons. As the story develops across the continents of Westeros and Essos, a wealth of new faces join the show's already extensive cast, including Jonathan Pryce (Wolf Hall) as religious leader the High Sparrow and Alexander Siddig (Da Vinci's Demons) as Doran Martell, the ruling lord of Dorne.

Have fun.

Trailer Time:

Star of the week

Simon Baker

The Mentalist, Tuesday, RTÉ One

I'd imagine GoT fans would hate The Mentalist because it's light entertainment, has virtually no character development, and roughly the same thing happens every week: there's a dead body in the beginning, and a murderer arrested at the end. It's a very silly procedural, and they even ditched the arc of the series a couple of seasons ago by killing-off bad guy Red John, and then dragged it on for another couple of years.

But I always enjoyed the Roger Moore-like performances of Simon Baker in the lead role of Patrick Jayne, a spoof mentalist who uses his impressive powers of observation to help catch killers. As Baker once put it, in a very Roger Moore-like way, his major task on the show is to avoid bumping into the furniture.

In this last ever episode, Jayne and Lisbon are due to get married. But will they get a happy ending with serial killer Lazarus on the loose? It's got to be yes.

Trailer Time:

Starting this week

Britain's Got Talent, Saturday, TV3

Ant. Dec. Simon Cowell. Yep, it's that time of the year again, folks. Another pile of desperate and deluded civilians try their luck at becoming a star. No changes in terms of judges as Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams all return, as does the Golden Buzzer, which, when used, gives an act immediate passage to the live shows.

While a few acts - Paul Potts, Diversity and Susan Boyle - have gone on to have successful careers, this show is really about the silly people who will do anything to get on telly. God love them.

Trailer Time:

Slow Train Through Africa with Griff Rhys Jones, Friday, UTV Ireland

Jones sets off across Africa by train, travelling 7,000 miles to explore wildlife, landscapes and people.

Later . . . with Jools Holland, Tuesday, BBC Two

Given the eclectic nature of this show it's always going to be a bit hit-and-miss and it can also lean more towards the muso than the amusing. Marc Almond, Blur, Laura Marling and The Vaccines are among the first set of guests in the new series.

Virtually Famous, Monday, E4/Friday, Channel 4

Glee's Kevin McHale presents the show about people who are internet famous. There's clearly a lot of loneliness in this world.

Wild Ireland, Wednesday, UTV Ireland

Christine Bleakley sets off to travel the Wild Atlantic Way, which runs from Donegal's Malin Head to Clonakilty in Cork.

Trailer Time:

Give a Pet a Home, Wednesday, UTV Ireland

Amanda Holden hosts as a variety of C-graders get all cuddly with the homeless and hairy of Newbrook Farm Animal Centre in the English midlands.

Ireland's Paramedics, Thursday, TV3

This is a six-part documentary series following the HSE National Ambulance Service in the never-ending battle to save people's lives across the country.

Tatau, Sunday, BBC 3

A new drama about two 20-something lads who decide to travel, with the Cook Islands as their final destination.

Made in Chelsea, Monday, E4

If you have any faith left in the human race, just watch one episode of this irony-free homage to posh idiocy and you'll realise that civilisation is doomed. It's season nine, so someone's watching this crap. Shame on you!

Ending this Week

Would You Believe? Sunday, RTÉ One

The stories of two people who were Tuam Babies, whose adoptive lives were very different: one found a loving home while the other was treated like an unpaid servant.

Banished, Thursday, BBC Two

Jimmy McGovern's gritty drama concludes with tensions mounting between the convicts and the soldier guards. Spilled blood, anyone?

Drama of the week

Parenthood, Tuesday, RTÉ2

Great show. Superb cast. Crap time. The Braverman clan have really grown on me over the years and here we are halfway through season five. This week sees a lot of work and personal collisions as Lauren Graham's Sarah gets good news and questions from Hank (Ray Romano). Dax Shepard's Crosby opens his house to a musician and annoys his missus, while Mae Whitman's Amber deals with her painful reality.

Trailer Time:

Comedy of the week

The Delivery Man, Wednesday, UTV Ireland

This is a brand new show (and nothing to do with the Vince Vaughn movie of the same name), so only time will tell whether or not it's any use. But the cast is strong. Newly-qualified midwife Matthew Bunting (Darren Boyd) is experiencing a kind of re-birth, having given up his life as a police constable in his mid-30s in the hope of finding something more meaningful.

He is apparently too warm and caring to be a cop. Arriving in his first job as a junior midwife at Easthill Park Maternity Unit, he makes an instant impact on his new team members, who are led by recently divorced senior midwife Caitlin (Fay Ripley), witty and likeable junior midwife Lisa (Aisling Bea), the extremely no-nonsense senior midwife Pat (Llewella Gideon) and nai¨ve trouble-maker Tash (Jennie Jacques).

Matthew has company from his former police buddy Ian (Paddy McGuinness) who gets suspended from the force and lands a job in hospital security, while his nemesis comes in the shape of senior consultant obstetrician Luke Edward (Alex Macqueen).

On Demand

Fargo, Netflix

Forget True Detective - this was the best new drama of 2014. A teak-black comedy drama inspired by the Coen brothers' film of the same name, it stars Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks and Martin Freeman in a tale about revenge, malice and badness in small-town Minnesota.

Trailer Time:

Documentary of the week

The Jinx: the Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, Thursday, Sky Atlantic

In what looks like being a fascinating documentary series from HBO, Oscar-nominated filmmakers Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling examine the complicated life of real estate scion Robert Durst, the key suspect in a series of unsolved crimes. You may have seen him in the news of late. On March 14 Durst was rearrested in New Orleans on a first-degree murder warrant.

Trailer Time:

Film of the Week

The Philadelphia Story, Saturday, BBC Two

An on-form cast and a razor-sharp script make this a true Hollywood classic. Starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart, it's a screwball comedy on roller skates. Directed by George Cukor (Adam's Rib, My Fair Lady) it revolves around a socialite whose wedding plans are complicated by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband and a tabloid magazine journalist. Remade as the musical High Society in 1956, The Philadelphia Story was based on a Broadway play of the same name.

Simon Cowell: "Zayn needs time on his own"

Music mogul Simon Cowell has commented on Zayn Malik's departure from One Direction saying the singer has "needs some time on his own".

The 55-year-old X Factor judge, who signed 1D to his Syco Records label, admits he thinks that 22-year-old Malik, needs "some time on his own".

Speaking to SugarScape, Cowell said: "He's a fantastic singer. Look, he's got to get his head together a little bit. He needs some time on his own, as he said, to be a normal 22-year-old, which he's gonna have."

He added: "I've always said to all of them, the future's bright depending on what you want to do. We've always hoped that One Direction would stay together for a long time and my hunch is it still will. They're just too good for everything to stop now."

When asked how the now four-piece band are coping Cowell said: "They were surprised and shocked but now they've... got used to it, and they're being professional and respecting the fans who turned up to see a great show."

TV highlights for today Friday April 10

Daniel Radcliffe guest hosts Have I Got News for You (9.00pm, BBC Two), Jack Reynor's on The Late Late Show (9.35pm, RTÉ One), while there's trouble in court on The Blacklist (9.00pm, Sky Living).

Have I Got News for You, 9.00pm, BBC Two

Haven't watched this in years; decades, even. The only reason it sprung to mind was because former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was supposed to be appearing as a guest host and then pulled out. As it stands, former Harry Potter Daniel Radcliffe will take the hot seat that used to be Angus Deayton's. Whatever happened to him, eh?

The Late Late Show, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

It's another Friday night and another few turns on the Late Late sofa under the baton of Ryan Tubridy to glide us into the weekend. Tonight's line-up includes American-born irish actor and Transformers' star Jack Reynor. His breakout role was as the lead in the acclaimed Irish film What Richard Did in 2012, for which he won himself an IFTA Award for Best Actor. Also appearing are the internationally-renowned Irish mentalist Keith Barry and The Voice UK runner-up Lucy O'Byrne.

Jack Reynor

The Blacklist, 9.00pm, Sky Living

The fate of Liz and the task force is thrown into the balance when she's questioned in court for the harbour master's murder. As she struggles to convince the judge to drop the case, Red realises the only way to clear her name is to track down Tom and drag him into the courtroom. He names the next criminal target on his Blacklist as The Major, the man who recruited Tom as a child and trained him to become a killer.

TEN's movie reviews - what's hot and what's not

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 09 April 2015 | 23.37

From Keanu Reeves' magnificent return to action movies with John Wick to Ethan Hawke's new `virtual' war drama Good Kill, here's TEN's round-up of new and recent cinemas releases. Don't butter your popcorn without reading it

John Wick

Directors: Chad Stahelski, David Leitch

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen

Duration: 101 minutes

Cert: 16

When we first meet John Wick he is mourning the loss of his wife (Bridget Moynahan) in his uber-stylish suburban home, a place littered with memories of their happy life together. Before Helen succumbed to cancer, she organised the delivery of a puppy so that John Wick (he is rarely called just John) would have something to love while he grieves - action lovers stick with me!

Time and Daisy (a very apt name for a very cute puppy) would have most certainly helped heal John Wick, but  a run-in with a bunch of Russian gangsters who want to buy his car, kick-starts a war that lures John Wick back into a dark underworld he thought he had left well and truly in the past . . .

Good Kill

Director: Andrew Niccol

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Bruce Greenwood, January Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Jake Abel.

Duration: 102 minutes

15A

US air force pilot Tom Egan (Ethan Hawke) has served on various flying missions abroad, on F-16s in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he now finds himself manning drone strikes on Afghanistan from an airbase in the Nevada desert, near Las Vegas.

In theory, this might be great for his personal life - he can live at home with his wife and two children, technically safe from enemy fire. Work is just a short drive each day to the air base with an intimate little chamber where he takes his seat each day to try and achieve the 'Good Kill' of the title . . .

The DUFF

Director: Ari Sandel

Starring: Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell

Duration: 101 minutes

15A

For those of you, like me, that had never heard the term "DUFF" before, it stands for the designated ugly fat friend and is usually applied to the least physically attractive member of a friend group. Delightful huh?

The DUFF's job is to be the approachable one that guys can probe for information about their hotter friends – whether they're seeing someone, if they'd go out with them etc – and also to make their friends look even better by comparison . . .

Fast and Furious 7

3/5

12A

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Kurt Russell, Jason StathamJordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Elsa Pataky

With the tragic death in 2013 of charismatic cast member Paul Walker, the latest instalment in the hugely-successful gear-grinding franchise comes well-oiled with added poignancy.

That's hardly a word you'd associate with a billion-dollar action series built on a luxury car fetish, speed, and comic book cliché but director Wan, who gets behind the F&F wheel for the first time, knows full well that Walker's passing is a moment of genuine sorrow for die-hard fans of the series . . .

The Water Diviner

Director: Russell Crowe

Starring: Russell Crowe, Olga Kurylenko, Yilmaz Erdogan, Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney

Duration: 111 minutes

Russell Crowe talks to TEN's Sinead Brennan on the red carpet for The Water Diviner

As Russell Crowe's friend, mentor and five-time director Ridley Scott has said, the key to staying fresh is to do what you haven't done before. And so, like many an acting Oscar winner before him, Crowe has gone behind the lens to make his feature directorial debut. It shouldn't be a one-off - he does more things right than wrong with The Water Diviner.

Declaring himself a believer in Scott's theory that the best stories come from the truth, Crowe's debut is inspired by a real-life Australian father who travelled to Gallipoli after World War I to search for the remains of his sons . . .

While We're Young

Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfield, Charles Grodin, Maria Dizzia, Adam Horovitz

15A

Duration: 97 minutes

Age and experience versus wide-eyed youth, digital versus analogue, and self-doubt and prevarication versus boundless energy and just, y'know, doing it. These are some of the themes in Noah Baumbach enjoyable inter-generational comedy set in Brooklyn.

It's a New York borough where settled forty-somethings and hipsters live cheek to jowl but operate in totally different spheres, a place where bearded young men and bohemian young women listen to cheesy vinyl, hold block parties, and possibly knit their own breakfast cereal. Actually, in this case they make their own ice cream . . .

Olly Murs confirms X Factor talks

Olly Murs has confirmed that he has had talks relating to the vacant X Factor presenter job.

The singer had been linked to the role following the news that long-time host Dermot O'Leary won't return to the show for its upcoming 12th series.

Murs has now revealed that Simon Cowell is keen on the idea of reuniting him with former Xtra Factor co-presenter Caroline Flack on the show.

He told spin1038: "I haven't got it yet. We've spoken about it in the papers but nothing's been finalised or nothing's been signed.

"We've had had a few discussions, that's about it really.

"Me and Caroline have obviously spoken about the idea of it, but like I say, it's just an idea at the moment, nothing's been finalised.

"Me and Caroline we were never interested in taking Dermot's job, it was only, you know, Simon's idea of potentially having me and Caroline do it.

"I would never want to take Dermot's job because I love him so much and I wouldn't want to be compared to someone as good as him."

The Zoo returns tonight - cute clip alert!

Back for a sixth season on RTÉ One tonight, The Zoo will once again showcase the passion and expertise the team at Dublin Zoo has for the animals in their care. Check out some super cute elephants having the craic in a preview of tonight's episode.

In tonight's episode there are 'large' expectations with the announcement of three elephant pregnancies, crucial for the conservation efforts surrounding the Asian elephant. The show follows the progress of the herd, the momentous three successful births and watches on as the new elephant calves enjoy their first play time with each other.

There are plenty of other birth stories to follow this series including the arrival of lion cubs for both lionesses Sita and Suri at the Asian lion habitat. There's also cause for celebration around a new addition to the zebra herd with the birth of a new foal. The baby boom continues with the birth of a Goeldi's monkey and the hatching of new flamingo chicks to add to the new arrivals.

Other stories include the arrival of Marlon, a West African chimpanzee who the team hope will take on the role of alpha male and breed with the Zoo's resident female chimpanzees.  Viewers will have to wait to see how this goes down with the current alpha male Austin as he gets used to this change.

The new series leaves the Phoenix Park to follow the zookeepers as they visit some of the Irish and international conservation projects funded and supported by Dublin Zoo including an incredible journey to Zimbabwe where zookeeper Kenneth Mackey witnesses first-hand the battle to save black and white rhinoceros from extinction.

The Zoo, RTÉ One, Thursdays, 7pm

Look! Endangered bongo calf born at Dublin Zoo

As springtime continues to surprise with such brilliant weather, Dublin Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of an eastern bongo calf on the African Plains late last week.

Weighing in at 20kg, the calf was born to first-time mother Nanyuki and father Hodari.

The new arrival brings the bongo herd to four and is a particularly significant birth for the team at Dublin Zoo and the international breeding programme.

The species remains critically endangered with possibly less than 100 eastern bongos thought to exist in the wild in a remote area of Kenya.

Team leader at Dublin Zoo, Helen Clarke-Bennett said, "We are delighted to report that we have a fine, healthy bongo calf who is feeding well and has already been introduced to its father. We don't know the gender of the calf as yet but first-time mum Nanyuki is proving an excellent mother. She became pregnant on her first mating with Hodari and it's great to see such a successful outcome".

For those who want to know more about the animals and the team at Dublin Zoo team, the popular show The Zoo returns for a new series at 7pm on Thursday, April 9th on RTE One.

RTÉ TEN's TV picks for today Wednesday April 8

This World: Britain's Jihadi Brides (9.00pm BBC Two) investigates the cynical manipulation of young women which is taking place across the UK through slick propaganda videos and social network sites. In the final episode of John Bishop's Australia (8.00pm, RTÉ2) the comedian travels deep into tropical Australia, and takes in the breathtaking natural beauty of both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. GAA US continues on TG4, 9.30pm

This World: Britain's Jihadi Brides

9.00pm BBC TWO

Across the UK in recent times, families have been have been left devastated by the disappearance of their teenage daughters who have run away to join the so-called Islamic State. CCTV footage of three teenagers from the same school in Bethnal Green has heightened concerns and tonight's programme reveals how Islamic extremism is increasing via the internet. The so-called Islamic State is believed to be operating over 45,000 social media accounts and has its own film unit producing slick propaganda videos aimed at luring people to join.

The Halane twins from Manchester, with 28 GCSEs between them, left behind all hopes of becoming doctors to marry jihadi fighters, and became teenage widows in Syria within a few months. There is growing evidence that recruiters are actively approaching and targeting such young women online. Lea, a French teenager who was stopped by intelligence officers minutes before she was due to be collected by her radicaliser at her school gates, reveals how her radicalisation had taken just a few months.

The mother of Grace Dare talks for the first time since her daughter made headlines after tweeting that she wanted to become the first UK woman to kill a UK 'terrorist'. A studious Christian girl who converted to Islam when she was 18, Grace began calling herself Khadijah. She told her mother she was going away to study, but she has never seen her since.

Once in Syria many British girls, including the Halane twins and Khadijah Dare, seem to have become part of a group of Western women who use extremist propaganda to bolster the recruitment of people to their cause.

John Bishop's Australia

8.00pm RTÉ 2

In this final episode, John travels deep into tropical Australia. Pedalling through the heat and rain, John takes on a gruelling military fitness test, rides motorbikes with Vietnam veterans and gets completely caked in mud while working on a banana farm. As the trip reaches its conclusion, John takes in the breathtaking natural beauty of both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, before ending his incredible journey with a surprising personal twist.

GAA USA

9.30pm TG4

Dara Ó Cinneide explores how the US clubs began to import Irish players, paying them to play in weekend games or for entire summers. At the start of the millennium a protest started against the payment of players. The view was that the money should be set aside to train young American kids, which would guarantee that the GAA would survive in America for future generations. The presenter visits teams all over America trying to get an-answer to this question. The matter clearly needs to be resolved if the GAA is to survive and grow in America and become a game that attracts all ethnic groups and not only the Irish-Americans who are already deeply involved.

2fm's Dan Hegarty champions unsung music heroes

2fm and 2XM DJ Dan Hegarty has been blogging for TEN about his experiences of writing his first book, Buried Treasure, a compendium of albums which he feels have been overlooked or undervalued.

In the book, Dan rounds up what he feels are unsung works by the likes of R.E.M., Si Schroeder, Gavin Friday and Blink while guest writers including Soak, Bressie, Bronagh Gallagher, and Imelda May champion their favourite overlooked recordings.

Buried Treasue by Dan Hegarty is available from all good bookstores, and online here

Why is it that people put themselves through the duress of writing books? Even after putting one together, I'm not sure if I have the answer to that question. The book that I've titled Buried Treasure - overlooked, forgotten, & uncrowned albums took approximately 12 months to put together from start to finish. How complicated can it be to do something like this you might ask? Often it's as complex as you want to make it.

The only way that I can describe how I put this book together is; it's like a jigsaw, only some of the pieces were not as easily assessable as you might think. It's not rocket science, it's not brain surgery, but it took a lot of time; more free time than I actually had. Mixing large projects like this with a young family is always going to be a delicate (if not unwise) balance, and that's exactly what it was in this case.

I used to wonder how people actually managed to get books completed. The romantic idea of letting your creative bursts run free into a visual reality while sipping on gourmet coffee (or something slightly stronger) is just that; and it certainly didn't happen that way for me. I wrote whenever I could; when I was on the bus or train, when I had a few minutes of quiet time, literally at every available opportunity. I had an ever-growing list of people to contact that were either directly or indirectly contributing.

That said, anyone that has the opportunity to write about something that they love is extremely lucky, and this is what gets you through the frustrating times. Nothing worthwhile is ever going to be straightforward, and Buried Treasure's conception and birth hit a few bumps along the way!

Dig it up now!

As I write this, the book has been out for a week. It's still strange to see it in its completed form. It's like looking at a particular book for the first time in many ways. The most unusual part of this for me has been doing interviews about it. I'm so used to being on the other side of the mic; it's like driving on the continent; you've driven innumerable times, but it feels different because it is!

The launch night was a real head-spinning few hours. There were bands and people there that I hadn't seen in years, and some that I'd never met before. Dave Fanning very kindly launched the book, which was a real thrill for me. He'd laugh to hear me say this, but it's true! It was great to have the launch in Whelan's as this was where I really learned a lot about music; from going to countless gigs, but more so from the three wonderful years that I was on Phantom FM (which was based upstairs in Whelan's for many years) in its pirate radio days.

If any of this sounds like I'm complaining in any way, I don't mean it to. I'm surprised at how well the book has been received so far; after working on anything for a good length of time, you begin to wonder if it's any good at all! I now understand how a band might feel when they're about to read a review concerning them; with compliments comes criticism, and it's often the constructive negatives that you learn the most from.

The next step is actually a DJ set in Tower Records this Saturday (April 11), which should be fun. It's tunes from many of the albums featured in the book, which will definitely make up an eclectic set!

Dan Hegarty

Sharleen Spiteri says she turned down The Voice

Texas front woman Sharleen Spiteri reveals she turned down an offer to join the coaching panel on The Voice of Ireland

Spiteri, who is celebrating 25 years with the Scottish rock band this year, has revealed that she was asked to be a coach on The Voice of Ireland this year.

Speaking to the Irish Independent Spiteri said: "Well, I was asked to do it. I said no.

"I get asked to do those sort of programmes all the time, and I'm like 'I don't really want to do TV, it's not really my thing'".

Spiteri also revealed that she would have been a hairdresser if she had not joined Texas.

She said: "I was such a good hairdresser. I was on the artistic team and I used to travel to New York, Italy and France to do shows, so it was pretty glamorous.

But are you f***ing joking? Would I want to go back to hairdressing? Not a f***ing hope in hell!"
